Just like the past few years, the Executive Director of the Rurikton Roses continued with her aesthetics tradition of choosing a color scheme for the Roses’ Wintersday gifts.  For 1333′s Wintersday, the socialite opted for warm hues, dominated by greens and golds. The year before, she’d also used gold, but with yellow as its main thematic color.   And the year before that, she chose vibrant purple hues.  In 1329, her theme was all about pale mints and powder pinks, so this year felt strangely familiar.  Was there a reason behind that?

But something about the color green entwined with nature’s boons, as if blooms and butterflies guided Lux when it came to welcoming 1333.  

Life, birth, rebirth, a promise.  Hope. Each Rurikton Rose, whether old or new,  whether actively working with the organization or mostly retired from it, received a lavish gift basket covered in peppermint green tulle and tied together with an intricate, pearlescent Wintersday tree ornament bedazzled with dangling beaded threads. Inside each basket, there were stacks of  gift boxes in various sizes wrapped in silk-finished pale teal paper tied with baby pink satin ribbons and adorned with rhinestone circlets on the bows’ centers. With it, an envelope, recognizable as the notorious lavender stationery belonging to a certain socialite, was addressed to each recipient.  It included the following note:

Enclosed, each recipient would find a lovely gold rose brooch, with tiny diamonds encrusted along the pink lacquer-painted petals.    An elaborate tree ornament decorated with green beaded threads dangled from each orb as a tear-shaped jewel added to its finishing touch. The elegant compact mirror’s pale variscite stone encasing sprouted three dimensional blooms decorating the upper cap, as well as filigree detailing along with tiny decorative rhinestone roses along the frame.  It provided a sturdy hold, thus aiding one’s grip while perhaps attempting to touch up during precarious situations….or just fighting a mesmer and trying to decipher illusions.  Secrets of the trade.  

Clearly enchanted, the accompanying jewelry box with dramatic tiny sculptures of flowers and butterflies served as a ‘storage’ for what each Rose might need instructions to use, should they not be a mesmer or have access to one.   A memory box, Lux would call it –lined with velvet, to “soften the blow, if necessary.”

A note was slipped into each box, with vague instructions.  A Rose with doubts or questions should see Lux about said box’s purpose or usefulness, if they were curious.  Such an object would always come in handy, some day.

As a set, a series of gold-encased containers embellished by a row of pink and green engraved blooms added a sense of ‘for your amusement’ to the gift, as if one could use said tiny bottles and cases for anything from perfume to poison.  How very apropos for all the scandalous Roses. Keeping  with the spirit of the organization’s own duality, a personalized pocketknife with each recipient’s name engraved on its main blade was found  –this year’s was a gold-framed butterfly-shaped switchblade, discreet enough to look like a hair clip in one’s purse.

And lastly, an ornate folding fan –its guard made of carved birch and housing a series of ribs that halfway through seemed to turn into damascus blades, like the previous year. At its head, a cat’s eye rivet rested, acting as the switch should its user decide to go from folding fan to full on tessen and turn it into a lethal weapon that could slice through a neck or three.   Not to mention, it could act as a focus for those in quick need of casting and perhaps otherwise disarmed.  Perfect for balls, in more ways than four.  This year, Lux opted for a mahogany mount to accompany said fan, for those who rather use it as home decor and weapon in plain sight should an…unwanted visitor appear.

Undocked unrestrained

The reason most farmers dock (cut off) the tails is to prevent fly strike, an often lethal infection of fly larvae in the rear of the sheep. Without a (VERY FLUFFY) tail for fecal matter to accumulate on, fly strike is almost completely eliminated!

there is a wide variety of similar treatments for farm animals that are entirely for the animals well being pigs get their tail curled and tusks removed as babies so they dont accidentally nip each other while playing or stab each other just walking around- even a small tail nip might be fatal once the other pigs react to the scent of blood goats/cows often have their horns removed as babies as well both for obvious reasons to prevent stabbings but also to prevent them from growing in weird that can cause pain and infection for the animal chickens and other poultry, especially pet ones or hobby farms, might have their flight feathers clipped to prevent them from flying over fences, where their life expectancy is nill outside the farm/owners enclosure

Pigs are omnivores and cannibals. Fun fact if you ever have need to dispose of a body, tossing it in a pigpen will get rid of it real fast.

There’s a reason why everyone went into a full blown panic when Dorothy fell into the pigpen in the Wizard of Oz. Pigs are vicious.

Yeah pigs, especially in large groups, are scary AF. If one of them is injured they just eat it. I don’t even think they bother to kill whatever it is, they’ll eat anything.

My belief is that anyone can be a princess. 

And while I can’t turn everyone into a princess myself - this holiday season, one lucky human is going to have a fairytale ending to their year - once upon a December! The winner will receive the iconic faberge-inspired music box and necklace from the animated film Anastasia!

This is my first photo with BUB next our last photo together.

On the morning of Sunday, December 1st 2019 we lost the purest, kindest and most magical living force on our planet. BUB was cheerful and full of love laying in our bed with us Saturday night, but unexpectedly passed away peacefully in her sleep.. I have always been fully transparent about BUB’s health, and it was no secret that she was battling a persistent and aggressive bone infection.  Even knowing this, we weren’t expecting her to pass so soon or so abruptly without warning.  I truly believe that she willingly made the decision to leave her failing body so that our family would not have to make that difficult decision ourselves. 

It is impossible to put into words the profound effect that BUB has had on my life, on the lives of thousands of homeless pets, and on the lives of those of you that have cared for her as if she were your own family. She taught me everything that I know about unconditional love, she brought my wife Stacy and I together, she’s the reason we have our beautiful children Rosco and Lula, and she has been a constant source of warmth and love in our lives for the past 8 years. To say that our family is devastated would be an understatement. But most importantly, BUB has made a huge difference in the world of animal welfare, and in the lives of millions of people worldwide. She has literally saved thousands of lives (both pets and humans), she started the first national fund for special needs pets, she was the subject of groundbreaking genetic and biological  research, she’s helped raise over $700,000 for animals in need, and has spread a message of determination, positivity, and perseverance to people all over the world. And even though my heart is absolutely crushed by her graceful departure from planet Earth,  I know that her sprit, magic, and overwhelming energy are still with us, reminding us every day to be better.

Dearest BUB, I will never forget your generosity, your limitless supply of love, or your uncanny ability to bring so much magic and joy to the world. I am forever honored and humbled that you chose me as your caretaker. Please visit all of us in our dreams often. GOOD JOB BUB.
