The arm wrapped round her neck from behind, a gasp escaping the blonde as he hands rose to attempt to claw away the tight hold. “S-Stop!!” Her hands moved up the arm, feeling the muscles there tighten as he held her in place. “David, please,” she gasped again, tears welling in her eyes as she attempted to wrench herself from the strangle-hold. A foot rose behind her, kicking at him frantically as she attempted to make purchase with SOMETHING that would give her leverage.

“Anna.” There’s a split second window here, he had a split second before people will notice that she’s gone and, before anyone will look over and possibly see him. Her name is a whisper amid chaos as the ambulance engine chugs and the fire crew still work to put out the blaze.

David is gone, that much he knew. For now, for this split second, he had his chance to get them to safety.

Luke was talking to one of the police officers, and without much ceremony, he moved up behind Anna, and clamped a hand over her mouth as he hauled her back behind the ambulance, keeping his hand over her mouth as he looked her in the eye.

His heart might ache at the shock and fear in her eyes if only it were capable.

“Shhh. Whatever you do, when I move my hand, you cannot scream ok? I know you’re scared…I will explain everything. But if you scream I have to take off and then we’ll never see each other again.”

A soft little smile, sad. Hazel eyes studying her face before he slowly released his hand from her mouth, sucking in a nervous breath. “We don’t have a lot of time, but we gotta get you and Luke outta here.”

The voice was familiar — sending a painful PANG through her as recognition flashed through her. But it was impossible, and it was a cruel joke that someone was playing, and it was with this in mind that Anna readied herself to bite the hand that covered her mouth, her elbow rising already to move swiftly into the ribs of whoever was behind her. Before she could, she was being dragged behind the ambulance. It was with a muffled string of curses that her eyes met that of her attacker.

The words died in her throat, and had Anna’s emotions not been fried from the events of the day she might have cried. CALEB?

His hand was removed from her mouth, and it was with a sharp intake of breath that she moved a hand to his arm — as though to ensure that he truly was real. “HOW?” Her head was reeling,

“How are you here? W-Where are we supposed to go? Mom and dad— Caleb, they’re—“ Horror flashed in her eyes, and it was with a sudden remembrance that she spoke again, the words rushing from her before she could restrict them. “DAVID— Caleb, he’s alive.”

“He’s still alive.” Like you.

She didn’t trust him, that much she KNEW. And it was with this in mind that she took a step backwards from him, knees hitting the bed behind her and tripping the blonde. It was with a small noise in surprise that she steadied herself, eyes whipping quickly back to David’s face — and the gun held tightly in his hands.

“They wouldn’t tell us anything.” Her voice was tinged with annoyance, despite the situation, and it was with a steadying of her gaze and her posture that she kept her eyes on his. “But I found out some things on my own. This is your —your hometown. Your parents died when you were young.” She cleared her throat at this, attempting to keep her tone steady. She’d come all this way, done so much work — just for him to find her. She couldn’t die here, not yet. In some small, hotel in a Podunk Kentucky town. “You were really empathetic, once. Before you — turned into THIS.”

Anna’s eyes flashed at this, attempting to hide the hurt she had buried there. It was with another pause that she continued, trying her best to ignore the barrel of the gun that seemed to be drawing closer. “Yes. I was trying to find you. I had to.”

❛ wasn’t that hard . ❜ not after he’d caught onto her trail , anyways . she was a tricky girl to follow . luke would’ve been easy to follow , if he’d been alone like her , but the government had a good way of covering the tracks of anyone they were protecting . it was only a made of time before they failed them , though . they’d already failed anna , letting her get out of their sight like that . what a shame . they should’ve been smarter . letting her wander on her own , without proper protection , wasn’t their smartest idea . none of them were smart , and none of them would ever outsmart him , either . especially anna .

he never let up on the gun , or on the aim . the barrel was pointing straight at her head , right between her eyes . precision was key . he’d been taught it during his time in aegolius , and that training would never leave him . FUCK THEM . ❛ i mean , not after you left luke . i tried to find him first , too , but it was just too complicated . ❜ a step toward her . ❛ you should’ve stayed with him . ❜

what he was really saying was , ( you and luke should’ve stayed together so that i could kill you both at the same time , and not separately ) . ❛ luke’s gonna be real disappointed once his sister stops contactin’ him . is that who you were talkin’ to ? ❜

“It wasn’t that hard to find information on you, either,” she said quickly, trying hard to ignore the barrel of the gun pointing towards her. “Why did you bother trying to find me? What if this is all a TRAP, David?” She was just talking now, keeping him occupied. It wasn’t a trap, of course - Anna was on her own, and not even Luke knew where to find her. She had been cryptic with that. Anna had avoided it carefully, not wanting the government officials who were hiding them to track her down. It was hard enough switching out phones when she needed to, covering her tracks.

And for what? He’d found her, instead. Despite her best efforts. “Why do you need to find him? He’s not going to do anything. He’s just a kid - a kid who TRUSTED you.” They’d been stupid to let him in - stupid to trust him. That, or perhaps it had been Anna’s own fault - perhaps he would have moved on after a few days, leaving her and their family safe. If she hadn’t made that call.

“I could have been talking to CALEB for all it matters - why do you need to know? What does any of this matter?” It was difficult to keep her voice level, the pitch rising as she choked back other words that threatened to come. “Aren’t you just here to kill me?”

he slid the gun out from the side of his jeans , where he’d had it tucked away for most of the afternoon , away from prying eyes . it had taken more energy than he’d ever wanted to expend ( especially on her ) to find her again . she was no professional at hiding , even with the help of the government , but her footprints were lighter than most . it was just a shame that he’d found her first , instead of running into luke . no doubt luke would tell him everything … if he asked nicely .

he could hear her murmuring on her phone , making a call to who-knew-what facility . after making sure no one was around and watching , david stepped out from around the corner , lifting the gun and training it somewhere along her jaw . ❛ who are you talkin’ to , anna ? ❜

Luke’s voice on the phone was comforting, and it was with a quick wipe under her eyes that she cleared her throat and stepped to glance out the window as she waited for her brother to finish what he was saying. It had been a few days since they had last spoken - longer than Anna had promised, to no one’s fault but her own. But she was fine, and more importantly Luke was SAFE. No matter what happened, that was the most important thing.

She had been searching all morning for public records, for INFORMATION on the man they had called David. She was determined to uncover anything and everything she could, even going to far as to visit where they had found to be the man’s hometown. So far, Anna had not found much, but she was determined. Especially after what had happened...

Anna shook her head and opened her mouth to speak into the phone when a gentle click and a voice behind her caused the girl to jump, spinning to face the new arrival. “Hey - I actually have to go. I’ll call you later?” Before Luke could respond, Anna was smashing the red ‘END’ button, and as though it were something from a nightmare, the girl slowly turned to steel herself in the face of the man who had killed her parents. Brow furrowed, and it was with something of a shaky breath that Anna spoke, though not perhaps in response to the question he had asked.

“How did you find me?”
