“I know, I know they are. I’m sorry.” The words feel empty, emotion is limited, has been ever since the procedure but her remembers it, love. Wanted nothing more than to reach out and touch her beautiful little face, but, there was no time.
“How is a long story, Ann.” He told her gently, feeling flighty as it was, looking around every two seconds to see if anyone was looking. Especially David. “A story for a less rushed moment. I got a car, over there…” He pointed to the stolen vehicle parked just a few yards away. “Get Luke, come with me. I will get you guys to safety and then..then I’ll deal with David.”
A soft smile, nowhere near happy. Pained, if anything. “It’s not easy to…kill guys like us, sis. But I’m real proud that you guys managed to survive him.”
He was sorry. Anna was sorry, too. Sorry for their parents, sorry for Luke -- sorry for ever TRUSTING David in the first place. She took a breath, attempting to steady herself and the emotions that she felt to be building up finally, after so many hours of nothing but SHOCK and ADRENALINE.
“I- okay, I’ll grab Luke,” came her response, confusion etched into her tone as her eyes shot back towards their younger brother before returning to Caleb a moment later, as though fearing he would disappear if she looked away for too long. As soon as he stated that he would be going after David once they were safe however, Anna’s eyes widened in surprise. It was with quick, rushed words that she shot a hand to grasp his arm. “Caleb - no. You can’t go after him. I know you’re - trained, or whatever - but please. You can’t go after him.”
Her gaze felt wild as it turned to his face, taking in the blankness of the expression there. “We can’t lose you twice. Not after what we just... had to do. I SHOT him, Caleb. And he didn’t die.”
