honestly???? one of the most obnoxious and unrealistic things abt bbc sherlock is the fact that they all sign off their texts with their initials like who??? does that??? look me in the eyes irl look me in the eyes moffat and tell me 1) that u kno someone who does that ironically and 2) that they’re in any way a nice person to be around like???? An instant afterwards he had closed the door behind us, and we had become felons in the eyes of the law. The thick, warm air of the conservatory and the rich, choking fragrance of exotic plants took us by the throat. He seized my hand in the darkness and led me swiftly past banks of shrubs which brushed against our faces.

i really love the C.A.M. story and this passage in particular. mostly because conservatories are cool and even cooler at night? it’s so intimate.

A brief storm cloud takes up residence on Holmes’ features, mostly hidden by an article about the newest member of parliament. He certainly thinks Watson could do worse than Miss Morstan. Still something about it seems a loss if not betrayal. He lays aside the paper to engage fully in the lighthearted battle. which he may take more seriously than he should. “No. The population would be much sparser if so. But some are perfectly happy without it.” Holmes pauses to examine his nails, a split second decision balancing on their delicate edges. “I am.” The safer option. He doesn’t actually wish to wound his friend; it’s not his fault Holmes cannot be like other men, find himself a nice woman and settle down.
Image

As is often the case, Watson finds himself wanting to reach out to Holmes, to reassure him, but of what? That he’ll find a woman to settle down with some day? That eventually he’ll see a woman and feel the same way about her as Watson feels about Mary? Preposterous. Not only would those statements most likely come across as more of an attack than a comfort, but Watson also doubts their truth. Instead he smiles slightly, leans forward ‘till his elbows rest on his knees; it is his usual, casual, position for such lighthearted (are they?) debates as these. Indeed, I don’t doubt it Holmes. But you have the sense to recognise your feelings, and the ability to get away with them, he doesn’t say, but there are many men who marry in spite of such things, and that’s where the problem comes from, I believe.

❝ here , lemme give you a hand w’that . ❞  hands clothed with fraying gloves reach out to grasp the large branch from the fallen canopy , shifting it with practiced ease while slowly tipping it over onto the other’s foxhole . a boot shuffles against the snow before pushing at the discarded branch , adjusting it slightly before clasping his hands together while aiming a friendly smile towards watson ,  ❝ remember , you just want enough to get cover . don’t overdo it , alright ? wouldn’t want it collapsing in on ya .  ❞

Right. Of course. If he comes across as cold, it is not out of choice. Indeed, in his whole life Watson has only been rude out of choice a handful of times, and most all of them were completely justifiable in his opinion. No, the shortness of his words is coming from a different place entirely; he’s afraid. Right now he should be sat in a pub with his friends, laughing about what they’re going to do with their exams, not in some frozen hell hole, digging himself into the ground,  waiting around to be bloody shot at and bloody-well. YesSorry I-sorry. Thank you.”

For a doctor, Watson is not all that good at breaking bad new; perhaps that’s why he’d initially trained as a surgeon, you don’t have tell people they’re dying if they die on the operating table. Not that he’s telling Mutt he’s dying, Lord no.

He’s telling him Holmes is dead.

It does not feel real, not yet, and he’s not convinced it ever will. The journey back from Europe had been a blur, the only clear memory he has of the whole trip is waiting at a station in France, and a woman had patting him on the arm and telling him it would all be alright. She was lying. The world can not be okay while Sherlock Holmes is lying at the bottom of the waterfall. Mycroft is handling the details of the funeral, a fact which makes Watson both relieved and ashamed. No one should have to bury their own brother, but Watson does not think he could take on the task of picking out songs and sending invitations without breaking apart completely.

If telling Mycroft had been difficult, telling Mutt and the rest of the Irregulars is going to be a herculean task. That is, if they haven’t found out already, for they do seem to have ears all over the city. Somewhat selfishly, Watson hopes to God that they already know so that he does not have to tell them himself. He ‘rounds the final corner to one of Mutt’s usual hideouts and whatever well rehearsed speeches he may have disappear at the reality of the situation. How can he do this? How could he not?

Mutt, I- he pauses, his voice breaks, and that is his second mistake. His first mistake was not pulling himself together before making this journey. A breath, and he tries once again to speak around the lump in his throat. Mutt I-I have some bad news. Holmes and a criminal had a fight while we were away and Holmes-I’m so sorry Mutt, but he-he didn’t make it.

dr. jekyll, for his part, was not a great deal more impressed than the fellow beside him. he had always taken somewhat of an interest in the supernatural, but this was all a painfully blatant fake, fit to fool only children at best. a strained sense of politeness was the sole thing keeping the doctor from leaving without another word. when the younger man spoke at his side, he glanced over, almost grateful for the distraction, and replied quietly, one would think so. they certainly have charged enough money to warrant a bit of effort.
Image

The strangers comments brought a quick smile to his lips, and he would have replied if not for the disapproving glare of one of the other patrons. Not wanting to be too rude, the doctor made an effort to remain silent and appear at least mildly interested in the goings on. That was until a loud (and quite obviously staged) banging took place on the wall and a woman swooned. Even with all his good manners, the doctor couldn’t help but scoff. Well really, that’s a little much. Do you suppose she’s an actress?

It is not often Watson attends events such as these, but his natural curiosity have led him to stranger things in the past. The dusty back room aught to provide the perfect setting for a seance, but the owners seem to be trying far too hard to convince the attentive audience they should be scared and the effect is somewhat grating, more than terrifying; not to mention he can see the string being pulled on every mysteriously moving object. Thoroughly let down, Watson cannot help but shuffle his feet and mutter to the man next to him. I say, you think they would have tried a little harder, wouldn’t you?
