Urška's interview with the Italian newspaper Il Corriere made by Gaia Piccardi

In the household Pogačar - Žigart, do you talk about races or do you leave them at the door?

It's difficult. We both race and we often go cycling together. Cycling is a huge part of our days. Let's say that I often avoid asking him certain questions, such as 'why did you start sprinting so early?'. We understand one another and we know what to say and what not to say.

Regarding the sprint, there were many discussions around Pogačar doing a leadout for Molano in Napoli.

He told me about it the evening before. "If I can find space, I'll try". Of course it was dangerous. Of course it'd be better if the Maglia Rosa in the Giro would avoid such risks. But this is Tadej Pogačar: he's impossible to tame. If he promises something, then he'll keep that promise. It's in his blood not to leave anything unattempted in order to win or help a teammate win. If he has good legs, he'll always try.

This generation of cycling prodigies (Pogačar, but also Evenepoel, van der Poel, van Aert, Vingegaard) is pushing the sport to its limits. Crashes are multiplying. Are you worried about it?

I can't deny that our job is dangerous. Even training is dangerous. The only consolation is that, considering Tadej's talent, risks are minimised. If I risk at 60kph, he risks at 80 kph. I trust him. For example, in Milano - Sanremo he saw that he couldn't follow Mohorič, so he held back. If I were worried, I'd stop living. You can get run over even right outside your doorstep.

Do you believe in fate?

Yes, but if you push the limits too much, you're pushing fate as well. You have to be careful.

Was it love at first sight with Pogačar?

No, quite the opposite. I met him in a training camp in Istria in 2017. We were racing for the same team in Ljubljana. At that time, I had a boyfriend and he was two years younger than me. He was already extremely talented. He came up to me and introduced himself: "Hi, I'm Tadej".

What did you like about that proactive guy?

His values, his way of being. He lives spontaneously and he finds the right balance between duty and pleasure. He always knows what he wants. And he's remained humble even after all his successes.

Tell us something about Pogačar that we don't know.

I usually cook at home, but recently he's improved a lot. He wears an apron and announces: "Urška, the UAE chef gave me an incredible slice of guanciale. I'll cook today". He likes doing the sound of love gesture with the pan (the wrist movement to mix the pasta without the spoon). He saw it on Instagram and loved it. And if the whole kitchen gets dirty, he's now learnt to clean it. When he wants to impress me, he cooks carbonara.

What makes him cry and what makes him laugh?

Tadej doesn't often show his emotions. He's an incurable optimist. I saw him cry two years ago when my mother died. He dedicated this year's Liège-Bastogne-Liège to her. More often, he cries with laughter for stupid things, for funny videos we send to one another, for pranks or jokes. He's a shy guy who's slowly opening up.

Where do you keep trophies and jerseys?

It's impossible to keep everything at home in Montecarlo. We have the two Tour de France trophies and the yellow jersey in our closet. The rest is all in Slovenia with Tadej's parents.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

With minimum wage, the structures that are developing and World Tour teams, women cycling is taking huge steps ahead, but I don't see myself racing for so long. I've studied Law for two years and I'd love to complete my studies. Life always finds a way to disrupt one's plans for the future, but if I could choose, I'd love for Tadej and I to be as happy as we are now, I'd love to have kids and raise them in Montecarlo where they speak three languages from kindergarten. But the plan is to go back to Slovenia eventually, and keep going out with our bikes together, simply for the pleasure of cycling.
