hi! it's been so long since i've posted / used tumblr but i just wanted to make clear that i do not support jk's transphobia and due to this + outgrowing the fandom/franchise i haven't seen anything apart of the wizarding world in a very long time. while the og hp books and films meant a lot to me growing up i am disgusted and disappointed in jk. i'm very thankful for the community and friends this fandom gave me though, i cannot express my appreciation enough :)

when you’re angry about cho chang’s name, please be mindful that she is not the only canon asian character of hp. padma and parvati patil are southeast asian. their names aren’t the best either, but don’t erase them when speaking out against jk rowling!

you are absolutely correct that we need to remember padma and pavarti!!

they are of indian descent, so they would be south asian, but it is so important that we remember all of these character of color who were wronged by the author

i'll also say there is a theory cho chang was chosen because it sounds similar to melancholy in mandarin 愁肠 (chóucháng) which is aligned with the poetic way a lot of chinese authors find double meanings in similar sounding words/characters (because it's very common in chinese to find double meaning) but i don't give ms rowling credit for that. i think it was completely accidental. still it's important to understand culture/language we want to defend as much as possible. thank you for listening

okay, thank you for elaborating! all of your messages are actually pretty inciteful, though i must agree that i’m sure it was completely accidental. i understand what you mean by equivocating cho chang to “ching chong” being harmful now, and though her name is actually legit and has some kind of meaning, since we both agree that rowling didn’t seem to put much thought into the name that it still could be seen as harmful as well? i’ve also been told about the anglicization from friends who are chinese, but they always felt it was an afterthought. something that saved jk’s ass from further scrutiny. to them it felt like she chose a very basic “asian sounding” name and then all the meaning and backstory behind it was coincidental. but i suppose there’s no real way to prove that! there’s many other things to criticize her on anyways. i appreciated this discussion! i’ll reevaluate what i say about cho chang now. thank you for taking the time to talk to me about it

Cho Changs name is actually not offensive. Cho means autumn and it's actually a very popular baby name throughout the last 50 years

i’m not gonna tell you you’re wrong since that’s your opinion but in my own experience as an asian person and in talking with every single chinese person and other asian person i know about cho chang they’ve always had a problem with her name. sure it could mean autumn but how is that relevant to her character at all. i tried to look for if she was maybe born in the fall but there doesn’t seem to be any information on that either. when jk comes up w names for her white characters they’re all unique (hermione granger, nymphadora tonks) and they have meaning with their character (i.e. an obvious example being remus lupin translating to moon moon or whatever) why is it that cho chang or padma & parvati patil get the most popular names of the last 50 years 😭 but also on that note could u maybe site me where you saw that cho was a popular name? everywhere i look has said that cho is a korean surname (or last name) and one other site said that it’s of japanese origin. yeah, not trying to argue with you but im genuinely curious

HELLO, DARKNESS, MY OLD FRIEND—it lingered at the edges of his mind, just shy of pulling him under but almost refusing to take him. To grant him the mercy of nothingness for however long the sandman permitted it. To leave him to his eternal rest, far beyond the painful influence of depression and guilt. — excerpt taken from chapter 3 of BOUND BY A TIMELESS CODE.

you can exist without your soul, you know, as long as your brain and heart are still working. but you’ll have no sense of self anymore, no memory, no … anything. there’s no chance at all of recovery. you’ll just — exist. as an empty shell. and your soul is gone foreverlost.
