      there is something daunting about the idea of staying. to be at gared’s side, would be to return to some level of familiarity… not safety, but something comforting. something that she had used to know … she knew she should smile & laugh & let the seed of happiness grow & blossom in her chest … but she could not. 
but there was already a garden in the bottom of her throat & it grew upon the rot of her brothers & sister & mother & father. it stunted her hope & twisted around her ribs in a way that made it difficult to even breathe, let alone hope. 
green eyes bear caution instilled by the blood of those she loved. she wanted to believe she could stay … but what if she got comfortable again? gared was family as much as any of her fallen loved ones. what happened when it was his turn to die? there is a moment before she speaks. the words have to wade through the flowers that were so intent on keeping them from finding her voice.
