It’s called copula deletion, or zero copula. Many languages and dialects, including Ancient Greek and Russian, delete the copula (the verb to be) when the context is obvious.

So an utterance like “you a bitch” in AAVE is not an example of a misused you, but an example of a sentence that deletes the copular verb (are), which is a perfectly valid thing to do in that dialect, just as deleting an /r/ after a vowel is a perfectly valid thing to do in an upper-class British dialect.

What’s more, it’s been shown that copula deletion occurs in AAVE exactly in those contexts where copula contraction occurs in so-called “Standard American English.” That is, the basic sentence “You are great” can become “You’re great” in SAE and “You great” in AAVE, but “I know who you are” cannot become “I know who you’re” in SAE, and according to reports, neither can you get “I know who you” in AAVE.

In other words, AAVE is a set of grammatical rules just as complex and systematic as SAE, and the widespread belief that it is not is nothing more than yet another manifestation of deeply internalized racism.

The man in Hollywood that told white executives to go fuck themselves by demanding they wait for Whitney Houston to finish her tour so she would be his costar.  I know they tried to replace her with a white woman.  They tried and failed.  Mr. Costner, Respect.

Oh they tried real hard.  When Costner was interviewed you could tell by his wording that Whitney was not their choice, they wanted another person.  Costner was the one who pushed for her, even when she thought she couldn’t do it.  They claimed time was money and she was doing her tour so they should go with someone else and he basically let it be known that he would not be doing it.  That man blessed us with a movie to remember her by and a Dolly Parton track that he picked for Whitney to sing, I will always love you.  Costner did that! 

Did you all know The Bodyguard took nearly 20 years to make and was originally supposed to star Diana Ross and Steve McQueen? Kevin even cut his hair like him for the role. I’m so glad they decided to wait for Whitney. I can’t even imagine this film (or soundtrack) without her. Her voice was like a character itself; it took on a life of its own. So, let us all thank Kevin Costner for suggesting Whitney, choosing such an amazing song for her, and making her sing that iconic intro in a cappella!
