My day has been like a really volatile stock market chart today.

Valley: I have applied to so many jobs and none are calling me back, so I’m applying to weird jobs I’m unqualified for like Marketing Director of Radio Content at PBS.

Peak: I wrote a fanfic, I haven’t done that in weeks.

Valley: After clearing four tickets in my work queue I received five more.

Peak: Someone left a bag of Diet Cokes in the conference room so now I have a free six-pack of Diet Coke.

Valley: Yet another of my coworkers is possibly leaving, reducing our ten person team to six people.

Peak: I’ve been invited to the east coast to headline a regional professional development event where I might be able to network my ass into a remote position.

Valley: missed my usual bus and had to catch a later one.

WHOA PEAK: My usual bus had been in a car accident AT the off ramp, and if I’d been on it I’d be unable to get off it. They were closing the off ramp, meaning that if I’d caught ONE BUS LATER than I did, we would have sat in traffic for days.

At least I have cats who are prepared to snuggle.

Valley: CONSTRUCTION KNOCKED OUT MY INTERNET

Peak: thanks to the wonders of technology I have cast Summon Pizza anyway.

Vote with your heart in the primaries, vote with your head in the general. If the eventual Democrat nominee isn’t your first choice, understand that America is not set up for a third party candidate to win the presidency. Vote for the lesser evil and try to be happy that you could see the difference.

Not only did Manchester pride think it was appropriate for them to have PRISON GUARDS at pride, but they thought that it was appropriate for them to have this float

This is like impressively tone deaf

I wanna bring this back while Manchester pride is under scrutiny.

i’m starting to think the problem is just Manchester

Nah the problem is definitely pride in general being overly commercialised. At London Pride last year I just watched dumbstruck as the endless corporation floats went by with like the occasional local interest and protest groups being drowned out by the big sponsored party floats.

Here are some examples of how companies just slapped the most inane slogan they could think of on their floats, handed out free shit with their logos made rainbow on them, and that was 90% of the parade.

Let’s not reduce it to just one pride parade being problematic, because this is a pervasive trend in pride celebrations. Our spaces are being coopted by marketing opportunists performing wokeness in the hopes of winning over what is now a commercially viable social group.

Support your local queer organisations, support your local queer events, don’t let capitalism shoehorn it’s way into everything we fought to have just so corporations can make a quick buck off of our community.

The people who organized pride in my town last year banned corporations and political parties from walking as a group. It was great, they got a lot of shit for it, like politicians tried to play it like they just want to be supportive and “you’re suppressing our rights”, but they handled it so well like “you’re still free to come to pride and support us, you just can’t promote yourselves, this year’s parade is about solidarity so we all walk together”. Surprise a lot of people who claimed they just wanted to be supportive didn’t come… Best pride ever!

I obviously remember how tedious and annoying it was when I was a kid and I would see adults who I had last met years before and they would be like “gosh you’re so much bigger wow do you remember me” or whatever like, WHATEVER!!! But now that I have so many tiny cousins who I do see once or twice every couple years I understand that what happens is you are possessed. I see a tiny cousin and my mouth just GOES “oh youre huge. when you were 4 months old no one could get you to stop screaming and I had to play a 3 hour long Enya playlist from YouTube for you” it doesn’t even pass thru my brain. Just directly out the mouth. Please take pity on us, children, we are just all possessed by weird ghosts who are only capable of stating the obvious every time we see young relatives, it isn’t our fault

Welp, it’s finally happening and I’m not ready

The folks are getting a divorce- yay! Dad’s an abusive alcoholic, mom is good and deserves so much better. Problem is, my mom, brother and I are being forced to leave the property and getting cut off. I knew this would come but we were counting on actually having a plan and money saved up, but we don’t. This is very sudden and scary and on top of all the bad shit that’s happening I have to say good bye to my babies, my sweet angels that I love so much. I can’t even express how much my heart aches right now, I’m just not prepared for this at all.

We have over 50 chickens that we need to adopt out/sell. Once they’re safe we need to figure out a plan for 4 horses who are my mom’s whole world. She thinks she needs to sell them, but these guys are everything to her, they’re the reason she’s still here today. I have a friend nearby who may be able to take them until we’re on our feet and can find a place to have them, but I haven’t asked her yet. Like I said, this all happened the last two days. I’m so overwhelmed and stressed. After we get the horses taken care of, then we’re going to try and get help from local organizations (social services I guess?) to get out of here and find a cheap place.

I’m obviously keeping Rex, I don’t need to tell y’all how important she is, and she’s cheap and easy to keep. Tatem (fluffy chaos) is staying with me too because same deal. Together they cost all of $20 every 2-3 months which I can manage no problem. I should technically find a home for my snakey, Cornelius, but if I can keep him I will. I’m probably moving in with my friend in NYC for now.

My dear, amazing, absolutely wonderful friend @friedgeppetto is going to kindly take in my pidgies (Piper, Carrie, Peter, lil baby) and our very favorite chickens until we can find a place to have them! Send them love and thanks if you get a chance for being so good, it makes my heart fill up with warmth that they’re willing to help. The birds that are going to them are: my 6 modern games (Flint, Barbar, Killian, Letitia, Dwayne, Laylani), Hazel, Momo (Sweeney’s baby), Tomtom (Barbar niece), Kiki (I’d rather not but she’s bonded to the latter two), Max, Wade, Pansy, my mom’s 6 bantam babies (Butternut, Filbert, Tallow, Hickory, Praline, and Litchi), the weird little serama guy Ferguson, and Capers (Millet’s daughter). Buckley, Sweeney, and two elderly rescues we have will probably also be going to them but it’s iffy.

Some of the bird’s already have homes lines up like my bachelor silkie trio (they’re going to become breeders, they’re gonna be stoked). A friend is taking the two bantam americauna pullets, Dali and Dori. Many of my brother’s orloffs already have homes but not all.

So, here’s a list of all the chickies:

If you’re interested in any of them excluding the ones mentioned (or if you are interested in the ones mentioned I guess go for it and maybe you’d be a good match) dm me on discord (Quail#8005) or email me at rexandquail@gmail.com

We live in upstate NY and are now very limited on money so shipping is only possible if the other party pays for the cost, meeting up is subject to what we can afford in fuel. I’ll do my best.

I’ll be posting a full list of all the birds and their information, I just gotta get up to date pictures.

So yeah, life’s falling apart. I’m hurting so much I’m numb. But at least we’re getting out of here…right?

I’m so glad he is going to be out of your life, but so sorry for everything that will uproot!

fun fact about cat genetics though that I just remembered: the gene that produces the color “orange” in cats is sex-linked. orange cats are statistically more likely to be male because of how sex chromosome linkage and co-dominance works. The gene is located only on the X-chromosome so males have one copy of the gene and females have two copies, and it is also co-dominant, meaning a cat that’s heterozygous for the orange gene will be both black and orange, so a tortoiseshell. But males can only have one copy so can’t be heterozygous!

This is also why it’s impossible for a male cat to be a tortoiseshell/calico, unless they got an extra chromosome lying around and are XXY.

In a purely theoretical sense, a male cat is 50% likely to be orange, 50% non-orange. He either has an orange gene or doesn’t. But a female cat has a 25% chance of being homozygous for orange, 50% chance of being heterozygous for orange aka calico/tortoiseshell, and a 25% chance of being not-orange.

25% chance of being orange sounds not that rare, which it really isn’t. It’s not rare for a female cat to be orange, but it is statistically less likely than a male cat being orange.

Anyway this has been completely random cat fun fact of the day!!

Botswana decriminalize homosexuality in a land mark ruling

After three judges came to the decision unanimously, Judge Michael Elburu delivered the verdict.

“Human dignity is harmed when minority groups are marginalized,” he said.

He labelled laws banning gay sex as “discriminatory” and said: “Sexual orientation is not a fashion statement. It is an important attribute of one’s personality.”

The law has been in place since 1965 when it was brought in by the colonial British government.

Read it here.

how can people see police escorting a band of literal armed nazis through a pride parade and not connect the fucking dots about whose side the cops are on

Avatar

I was there when this happened. My gf and I were helping a group hand out free food and water by the entrance when we saw them across the street. They crossed the street, passed by the gate and us, and kept going, waving their swastika proudly.

They were surrounded by cops. People were shouting and shoving and the cops were pushing everyone back. I shouted at a cop and he looked right at me and said “They have the same rights as you do.”

According to people that followed them, someone threw a water bottle at the nazis and was quickly swarmed by cops.

As people were walking up to the gates, I shouted to be careful, as there were nazis nearby being protected by the cops. A cop that was close by directing traffic was getting real upset with me, so I moved down a ways so he couldn’t hear me.

This is why cops don’t belong at Pride. They don’t protect us, they protect the ones that want us dead.

ACAB

According to some sources they urinated on an Israeli flag and tore apart a rainbow flag.

This is disgusting.

Yes they were escorted but the other side of the story that’s not being told is that these nazis were armed, 5 firearms in total. If anything they managed to successful prevent a catastrophe from happening. The last thing we need is more violence against our community and our numbered dwindled by POS. We also had ally’s in the department and PoC so simmer down and put your pitchforks down. They were just doing their actual job for once.

Bitch the TITLE OF THE FUCKING LINK says “armed neo Nazis”! It’s not the “other side” of the story, it is part of the open story. That armed Nazis get a police escort into pride meanwhile in other situations police force people to disperse for peaceful protest.

They ripped up pride flags and pissed on an Israeli flag and the police did nothing but they wore some rainbow badges so you stamp you feet for them and call them allies.

Fuck I’m sick of people like you.

Hello everyone,

I have decided to start writing a book to help guide Women to creating a fitness lifestyle that works for each individual’s physical and mental needs that can fit into their schedule. There will be a focus on Martial Arts as well as enjoying the exercise you do to become healthier, and it will emphasize body positivity/inclusivity as well as tailoring fitness, food, and exercise to your unique needs as an individual.

However, I need your help on two different fronts. First, if you could send me testimonials on how this blog has helped you get into fitness/improve your fitness lifestyle, please send it to me on here, Twitter, or Discord and tell me that you are ok with me potentially putting it into the book. I can’t promise every single testimonial sent to me will be put into the final product but right now I believe it will depend on how many I get. Second, if you have experience publishing books I would love to hear from you about your experience and how you got it  published (self-published or otherwise).

-FemaleWarrior, She/They

I could really use your testimony if you would be comfortable sharing it with me! Not many people have sent me any so far.

I think the Hunger Games series sits in a similar literary position to The Lord of the Rings, as a piece of literature (by a Catholic author) that sparked a whole new subgenre and then gets blamed for flaws that exist in the copycat books and aren’t actually part of the original.

Like, despite what parodies might say, Katniss is nowhere near the stereotypical “unqualified teenager chosen to lead a rebellion for no good reason”.  The entire point is that she’s not leading the rebellion. She’s a traumatized teenager who has emotional reactions to the horrors in her society, and is constantly being reined in by more experienced adults who have to tell her, “No, this is not how you fight the government, you are going to get people killed.” She’s not the upstart teenager showing the brainless adults what to do–she’s a teenager being manipulated by smarter and more experienced adults. She has no power in the rebellion except as a useful piece of propaganda, and the entire trilogy is her straining against that role. It’s much more realistic and far more nuanced than anyone who dismisses it as “stereotypical YA dystopian” gives it credit for.

And the misconceptions don’t end there. The Hunger Games has no “stereotypical YA love triangle”–yes, there are two potential love interests, but the romance is so not the point. There’s a war going on! Katniss has more important things to worry about than boys! The romance was never about her choosing between two hot boys–it’s about choosing between two diametrically opposed worldviews. Will she choose anger and war, or compassion and peace? Of course a trilogy filled with the horrors of war ends with her marriage to the peace-loving Peeta. Unlike some of the YA dystopian copycats, the romance here is part of the message, not just something to pacify readers who expect “hot love triangles” in their YA.

The worldbuilding in the Hunger Games trilogy is simplistic and not realistic, but unlike some of her imitators, Collins does this because she has something to say, not because she’s cobbling together a grim and gritty dystopia that’s “similar to the Hunger Games”. The worldbuilding has an allegorical function, kept simple so we can see beyond it to what Collins is really saying–and it’s nothing so comforting as “we need to fight the evil people who are ruining society”. The Capitol’s not just the powerful, greedy bad guys–the Capitol is us, First World America, living in luxury while we ignore the problems of the rest of the world, and thinking of other nations largely in terms of what resources we can get from them. This simplistic world is a sparsely set stage that lets us explore the larger themes about exploitation and war and the horrors people will commit for the sake of their bread and circuses, meant to make us think deeper about what separates a hero from a villain.

There’s a reason these books became a literary phenomenon. There’s a reason that dozens upon dozens of authors attempted to imitate them. But these imitators can’t capture that same genius, largely because they’re trying to imitate the trappings of another book, and failing to capture the larger and more meaningful message underneath. Make a copy of a copy of a copy, and you’ll wind up with something far removed from the original masterpiece. But we shouldn’t make the mistake of blaming those flaws on the original work.
