i think its so funny that alumni from schools like harvard and columbia that were there during the protests in the 60s-80s are expressing support for students currently protesting against the genocide in palestine, and random zionists that were NOT at these protests in the 60s-80s have the never ending audacity to tell these alumni "well thats different, what you protested was good and what they're protesting is bad." as if protesters against the vietnam war and apartheid south africa were not also demonized, arrested, brutalized, and even killed for their activism. history only remembers them fondly after the damage has already been done.

Another aspect of the Gaza Genocide that I want to talk about is the complicity of Internet banking and crowdfunding websites like GoFundMe.

I have seen multiple Gazans raise enough money to leave for Egypt, but the banks and the crowdfunding websites freeze their money or cancel their funds for "suspicious activity" or whatever. Every day that passes in Gaza supplies get more scarce, conditions get more deadly, and the price to cross into Egypt gets more expensive. I've seen people, like ghost-90 here on Tumblr, raise the full amount to get their entire family out of Gaza, but their money gets frozen for so long that the original goal is only a fraction of the price now needed to cross the boarder.

These financial institutions should not be allowed to get away with contributing to the death toll in Gaza. They are intentionally keeping people trapped in a kill zone by withholding money that is rightfully theirs.

I'm so pissed and angry that every avenue for relief for Palestinians is being cut of left and right. It is vile that Gazans are being extorted for 10s of thousands of dollars by the Egyptian gov just to save their family's lives, but even when they play by this corrupt game, the world still finds a way to make them suffer.

My heart is with every Palestinian for the rest of time, from river to sea you will all be free. 🇵🇸❤️

I have an end-of-life patient to whom I spoke today. She burst out laughing and said, "It was all such fun. I just had so much fun." I wish this for everyone. I wish that we each would meet death laughing, with little regret and even less fear.

It makes me smile every time I see someone reblog this post with commentary about how it made them happy or changed how they look at life and death. This little old lady had no idea how much warmth and comfort she brought to thousands.

fascinating to me how quickly we forget that the cycles repeat. people treating 5-15 year olds like this breed of superchild created to do evil and taint the world. that was all of us. "they're wrecking sephoras" you would not survive a 2015 hot topic with this mindset. "they're falling for the stanley cup thing" buying on trend overly robust camping gear for every day use is like. a middle class tradition in this country. our glorious kånken backpack vs their wicked stanley cup.

On related note, a few years ago, the Entomological Society of America officially discontinued the use of "gypsy moth" and "gyspy ant" as common names for Lymantria dispar and Aphaenogaster araneoides. L. Dispar is now known as the "spongy moth," so named for the appearance of their eggs, but I don't think a new common name has caught on for the ant species yet.

These changes we brought about, in large part, by the advocacy of Romani people in academia. You might not think that bug names are a very serious issue, but I believe that language matters. These species became known as "gypsies" because their attributes were likened to certain stereotypes and negative perceptions of actual Roma, so the continued use of those names reaffirmed those negative associations in the public consciousness. Slurs and pejoratives can never be truly decontexualized.

In my mind, one of the biggest obstacles that Romani people face when we are trying to advocate for ourselves is a lack of recognition as a marginalized group that deserves the necessary consideration. Even for seemingly trivial matters, like bugs or comic book characters, the way that people talk about us-- and talk down to us, when we get involved-- is telling. So, I always think that changes like this are a win, because it means that people are willing to learn and grant us the dignity we deserve. And there's nothing wrong with wanting to effect change in your own field, even arts and science.

In the end, if children bother you for sensory reasons and that's why you don't want them to be in the same public spaces as you, there are disabled adults who can and would cause the same sensory issues for you. Adults who are loud, who vocally stim, who have poor boundaries, poor hygiene, who cry in public, etc etc etc. And they're already socially ostracized for all of this.

So actually yeah, it's the bare minimum you can do for the group with the least human rights on the planet to figure out how to accept children as part of your public community without hating them for it, even if you are child-free yourself.

i am totally going to come across as a boomer in this post but as an engineer it's common sense to not build systems with a single point of failure. and i'm starting to realize that our usage of the smart phone is exactly that. a single point of failure. the calling/texting is the implied function of the smartphone, which is fine. that's what it's built for. but nowadays we don't think to keep a physical map or atlas or gps unit in our car because our phone has google maps. we don't keep address books anymore because it's all stored in our contacts. i serve customers who no longer carry a wallet/physical card because it's all on their phone. this is literally a single point of failure. if you lose or break your phone when you are in a foreign place you are fucking screwed. maybe you're still screwed even in your home town because so many people have become accustomed to using a smart phone to take them anywhere.

I'm just saying, if there's a curse that runs along your family line and you don't tell your kids about it, how the hell are they supposed to go on a quest to stop it?

Tell your children about your medical history.

Everytime a cis women tries to argue against gender neutral language in medical settings it becomes very clear they care more about their comfort then trans men being denied medical care and dying.

I don’t care how ‘uncomfortable’ the terms person with a uterus, person who can give birth, person with breasts, etc. makes you. I very much care more about trans men having access to medical care than a cis person’s feelings.

how come a trans man being “uncomfortable” with the terms woman and female is a huge crisis that amounts to “denying them medical care” and killing them, but using terms that make even more women uncomfortable is apparently such trivial problem that you’re mad at them for even daring to express their discomfort?

please just attempt to use your brain every now and then

Being called a ‘person with a uterus’ won’t cause insurance to deny coverage for a cis women’s reproductive care. But being called a ‘women’ will cause insurance to deny coverage for a trans men’s reproductive care.

Please attempt to use your brain every now and then

This ain’t derailing at all! Talking about how this language helps different trans people in different ways is important!

Also like. Not all women have a uterus. Not even talking about trans fems here: plenty of cisgender women do not have a uterus because they either have had theirs removed or never were born with one in the first place. Most of the second category are intersex women. Are those women no longer women because of their lack of uteri?

If the answer is "welllllll those are women without uteri" then the problem isn't that it's a focus on medical labeling of organs. It's incredibly transparent that the problem is respecting the gender of the hypothetical person who has a uterus. If you don't consider it dehumanizing to label women by whether or not they have uteri in the case of *cisgender* women who have had them removed or were born without, then your problem is that you don't like the idea of trans women being labeled as "woman born without uterus" and trans men as "person born with uterus who is not a woman".

Before I even knew the word "intersex", my biology teacher in high school brought up that he was childless specifically because his cisgender wife, who he loved very much, was born without ovaries or uterus, and thus while many of us within the class cursed menstruation, it was not something all women faced. Before I knew that I am intersex, my cisgender mother and one of my sisters had hysterectomies due to serious cancer concerns, and thus I knew that a woman was defined by more than her childbearing capabilities. Before I knew any (out) trans women, I had cisgender relatives survive breast cancer due to mastectomies, and thus I knew the value of a woman was not in the shape or size or "natural"-ness of her breasts.

Every time this comes up I remind these folks that I was born both with a uterus and with a testicle. What does that make me? Am I a man or a woman? Usually, they decide it makes me a freak. But this type of language helps me too- I was designated female at birth and inside of me there is a testicle that eventually needs to be removed. But testicle removal surgery is for people with M markers, not F markers, so how am I going to convince insurance to pay for it and how can I get the doctor to speak appropriately about it? Uterine removal, which I also eventually need, is for people with F markers. So, am I medically a man or a woman? Which marker do I need to access medical care?

I don’t understand Godzilla Vs Kong.”who wins an alligator or a monkey” alligator every time. “What if they were both big” what if you had sense. You would see

You don’t get it Jame. The monkey is substantially smaller than the Empire State Building and the alligator can unleash nuclear power blasts

Actually if any of you had bothered to watch the Star Trek episode "Arena" you'd know that a monkey can totally defeat an alligator so long as the monkey has a rudimentary understanding of how to make a gun

now see i think that nuclear power blasts are slightly stronger than a rudimentary understanding of how to make a gun

About the AO3 "No Guest Comments for a while" warning

If you're not following any of AO3's social media accounts you might be in the dark as to what kind of "spam comments" have engendered this banner at the top of the site:

These spam comments have been posted about a great deal on the AO3 subreddit for the past couple of days. Initially they comprised a bunch of guest (logged out users) bot comments that insulted authors by suggesting they were using AI and not writing their own fics. Some examples, from the subreddit:

But it then escalated to outright graphic porn images and gifs being posted in comments, again by logged out 'Guest' accounts. Obviously, I'm not going to give examples of those, but between these two bot infestations, AO3 has clearly decided to act and has temporarily closed the ability to post comments for users who are not logged in with an AO3 account.

Unfortunately, this means that genuine readers who don't have an AO3 account won't be able to leave comments on fics that they enjoy.

If you are a genuine reader who doesn't yet have an AO3 account, I strongly suggest getting yourself on the waiting list for one. More and more AO3 authors are now locking their fics down to registered users only - either due to these bot comments or concerns about AI scraping their work - which means you're probably missing out on a lot of great stuff.

Hopefully guest commenting will be enabled again at some point soon, but I suggest not waiting until then. Get yourself on that list.

Wait times are going to be longer than usual at the moment, due to the current Wattpad purge [info on Fanlore | Wattpad subreddit thread], but if you're in line, then your invite will come through eventually.
