The first time Lando calls Carlos “my Carlos” in any au, Carlos’ reaction is the same. He feels his stomach lurch even as his fists clench. Every breath comes out painful, little shards of ice piercing his lungs. It’s like his whole body is trying to resist—something. He panics for a moment (it’s not supposed to be like this, why is he reacting like this?), and then he realizes: his body is resisting something that comes so, so unnaturally to him:

Utter, absolute peace.

And when he realizes that, his breath hitches. His eyes sting. He feels his jaw slacken, ease, for what feels like the first time in…ever. In forever. His toes uncurl, his stomach settles back into place (albeit still alive, still fluttering with something juvenile, something simple, bodily-good). His shoulders slump, his lips quirk up in spite of the roiling emotions in his very core, and his fingers, of their own accord, reach for Lando. Lando smiles at him, and he looks shy.

And Carlos wonders, amazingly, whether he feels shy too. And he wonders, amazingly, whether he’s fine not being certain about that.

Utter, absolute peace.

Carlos: “Lando, you need to come home” (not “my home”)

A couple of seconds later:

Lando: “Just send me your address” (like you don’t know…)
