This machine kills AI

Image Description: Black and white photo of an art pencil (Lorenzo Monatore * 2B) with text that reads “This machine kills AI”.

A screenshot below from ‘Artists Against Generative AI' and a message from Danielle Sanfilippo.

(Transcript of text)

Posting this on behalf of a member who would like to remain anonymous:

I’m an art director and supervisor for a large studio. The studio heads had the bright idea before I started to hide prompters. Several bros were brought onto the film project. I absolutely hated myself for not quitting on the spot but stuck with it because it’s mercenary out there. Having a family to feed etc. I decided to use this time wisely. Treat them as I would any artist I had hired. First round of pictures of a sweeping Ariel forest landscape comes though and it’s not bad. They submit a ton of work and one or two of the 40 are ok. Nearly on brief. So first round of feedback goes through and I tell them about the perspective mistakes, colour changes I want, layers that any matte painting would be split into. Within a day I got 5 variants. Not changes of the ones I wanted but variations. Again. Benefit of the doubt I give them another round of feedback making it clear. Next day it’s worse. I sit there and patiently paint over, even explaining the steps I would take as a painter. They don’t do it, anomalies start appearing when I say I want them to keep the exact image but with changes. They can’t. They simply don’t have the eye to see the basic mistakes so the AI starts to overcompensate. We get people starting to appear in the images. These are obviously holiday snaps.

“Remove the people”

“What would you like them changed to?”

“...grass. I just don’t want them there”

They can’t do it. The one that can actually use Photoshop hasn’t developed the eye to see his mistakes, ends up getting angry with me for not understanding he can’t make specific changes. The girl whose background was a little photography has given me 40 progressively worse images with wilder mistakes every time. This is 4 days into the project. I’m both pissed about the waste, but elated seeing AI fall at the first hurdle. It’s not even that the images are unusable, the people making them have no eye for what’s wrong, no thicker skin for constructive criticism and feedback, no basic artistic training in perspective and functionality in what they’re making.

Yes the hype is going to pump more money into this. They won’t go anywhere for a while. But this has been such a glowingly perfect moment of watching the fundamental part fail in the face of the most simple tasks. All were fired and the company no longer accepts AI prompters as applicants. Your training as an artist will always be the most important part of this process and it is invaluable. I hope this post gives you a boost in a dark time.

If I had to guess, over half the people who are like "oh we don't want sexual stuff at pride" are people who've been told there is public fucking at pride by people intentionally misleading others. I know when I first heard about the discourse I thought the two sides were "people should be allowed to fuck publicly at pride, there shouldn't be any kids there bc it shouldn't be family friendly" and "pride should be family-friendly bc there will be kids there" and my initial reaction was "wait people fuck at pride? Yeah that's wrong, I think pride should be able to be attended to by queer kids and teens".

I then learned that the people who presented the two sides in that way were being misleading and went "wait wtf??" (I also learned that "family-friendly" was not, in fact, synonymous with "okay for kids to see", but was actually a dogwhistle.)

Avatar

So, like, there is something to be said for the fact that 'sex in public' is a fact of life for unhoused people and for the history of queer people, and I don't want to be like 'hey any kind of sex in any place that might be vaguely considered public should ruin your life.' That's the kind of thinking that ends up with a woman thinking she's alone on a deserted beach masturbating, not realizing a family is within eyeshot up the beach, getting her arrest video posted by the cops to shame her, and dying by suicide because people harassed her endlessly. (This was recent.)

But that said, no one is whipping out their dick at Pride. The issue is that, to some people, any display of queer sexuality is considered basically the same as two dudes rawdogging on a pile of dicks.

And yeah, sure, Pride should be for a lot of people, but also, Pride started because a bunch of kinky queer adults said 'yeah, we deserve time and space for us,' and making it okay for queer kids and teens should not result in the expulsion of those who created it in the first place.

I fully support the creation of additional and alternate Pride spaces for kids and teens, but under no circumstances should that come at the cost of pushing out the people who got us there in the first place.

But yeah, there are people who are being super fucking disingenuous about this and I'm over it.

Avatar

I guess for the sake of true clarity I should note that there are plenty of places where people do technically "have their dicks out" at Pride. That's pretty common in Seattle, where public nudity for non-sexual purposes is totally legal. Every so often at Seattle Pride I'll just turn around and hey, there's a penis, but it's ... just there, being a well-behaved floppy dick. I have yet to see an orgy break out at Pride.

And there are deliberately and specifically nude events in Seattle, as opposed to incidental nudity at Pride, so the fact that no one is clutching their pearls about the nude cyclists at the Fremont Solstice Parade is telling.

That's a great point.

I've definitely seen people in bad faith use images from Folsom Street Fair and claim that it's a pride event where children are present (no children are allowed at Folsom Street Fair, obviously) so thinking that people are having public sex at pride, if your only info comes from homophobes, makes sense.

Yeah, I've seen it, but it's not nearly as common as people just having problems with gay men in pup masks and harnesses. It's actually pup masks and leather daddies that seem to send people into frothing homophobia more than anything. There's a picture commonly used as a clobbering cudgel that's got a girl who's about 4 or 5 talking to two shirtless pups. The pups are kneeling down and on eye level with her, and they're all standing on the sidewalk with lots of people around.

The objection isn't to any kind of actual sexual activity but to the fact that those men are pups. Their mere presence as pups and their wearing of pup masks is - according to the people who object - overtly sexual in a way that (for example) a cishet man and woman in swimsuits and wearing a wedding ring isn't.

Both pairs of people are wearing about the same amount of clothing, and both are wearing an item that purports to tell the viewer something about the wearer's sexual activity. One of them is Dangerous and Deviant and Wrong for a kid to be around according to the hand-wringers, and gives our community a Bad Name, while the other is perfectly fine and normal.

The homophobia here comes in the fact that all unapologetic queer existence is viewed as overtly sexual. That's why you have this guy getting uninvited from a central PA school district because he's gay - he was going to talk about bullying in school and the book he wrote about it - because in the minds of homophobes, our very existence is sexual to the point of obscenity.

I'm sure that some people do actually circulate pictures of Folsom and claim that fisting or whatever is happening at regular old Pride events where kids are present, but it's far, far more often just perfectly benign images of queers who happen to Look Overtly Queer, with heavy emphasis on furries, pups, leather daddies, and people who Look Visibly (Stereotypically) Trans.

I can't say this enough: to the people who hate us, our very existence is sexual to the point of obscenity, and trying to be Respectable Enough is a losing game. If they get rid of the pups, the furries, the drag queens, the leather daddies and the people who Look Trans, they'll turn their eyes on the queers wearing khaki shorts and polos, and I know that because I grew up in that world they're trying to bring back.

The first step in fighting them has to be not doing their work for them.

Hundreds of Jewish anti-war demonstrators have been arrested during a Passover seder that doubled as a protest in New York, as they shut down a major thoroughfare to pray for a ceasefire and urge the Senate majority leader, Chuck Schumer, to end US military aid to Israel.

The 300 or so arrests took place on Tuesday night at Grand Army Plaza, on the doorstep of Schumer’s Brooklyn residence, where thousands of mostly Jewish New Yorkers gathered for the seder, a ritual that marked the second night of the holiday celebrated as a festival of freedom by Jews worldwide.

The seder came just before the US Senate resoundingly passed a military package that includes $26bn for Israel.

CRINGE ⚠️ SENSHI CAUGHT IMPROPERLY COILING A ROPE

(L-R)

  1. weird rake. would it even work for rocking if they're so uniform?
  2. single pin & tension wrench combo??
  3. half-diamond and hook combo? key extractor?
  4. no reason for this shape to exist. that is a tuning fork
  5. snake rake &or a zipper rake

They very likely haven't yet invented the pin-tumblr lock, so they're likely using a warded lock, whose internals can be pretty crazy:

As a result, warded lockpicks can be pretty whacky:

By comparison some modern warded lock picks:

A small keyring with 5 sheet metal lockpicks, each of which is a long rectangle with a couple tabs on the sides

Might just be the depression talking but i feel the feedback and length of time of a challenge changes how rewarding it feels. Most games are designed to peak in difficulty and reward the player around the same time. Life doesn't work like that. Retail doesn't get harder throughout the day and then rewards you with cash at the end. You struggle daily for 1-2 weeks then get sent a check.

Sometimes it is an easy pay period other times its incredibly difficult, but regardless you get rewarded the same. Thus why people may feel better about overcoming video game challenges while not feeling even a fraction of that reward by doing real life tasks.

Indigenous leaders say the case of a woman who an officer punched during a recent arrest is another example of systemic racism in policing.
The incident took place on New Year’s Eve at an affordable housing complex on Powell Street.
“It’s not right. It’s so contrary to what things are these days and in terms of moving forward in terms of reconciliation, in terms of building that relationship with the police department,” said Lynn White, president and CEO of ACCESS Society, the Indigenous organization that operates part of the building.
The woman, who Global News has agreed not to identify for safety reasons, said she was the one who originally phoned police, seeking help to remove an intoxicated guest from her party.
When officers arrived, they ultimately detained the woman, who is Indigenous. [...]

Note from the poster @el-shab-hussein: "Lingering" as if it was ever even remotely addressed in any significant way. It's not "lingering systemic racism", it's omnipresent and pervasive.

Her mom doesn't earn enough to buy her food? Father can't chip in? Doesn't she have an uncle?

She was arrested and charged with criminal trespass for participating in a rally that had been told to disburse, as soon as they say you need to leave you need to leave or you're in violation of the law.

As a result of the arrest she was suspended by her school for 3 days same as some other students, as is what I'm guessing is a standard procedure.

Is the complaining congresswoman looking for special treatment for her child, does she think her kid is above the law.

Directly from the ACLU here

She's not covered by 1A here, not if you stay after you've been instructed to leave.

People used to actually go in prepared to go to suffer the consequences of their actions when it came to protests, maybe because they actually cared about the cause and not their image.

To be clear, I don't think Hisri deserved that treatment; I don't think protesters deserve mistreatment by authorities in general! Part of being an abolitionist and all that.

So before anyone deliberately discomprehends this post, the issue being raised is the disingenuous wording of the Daily Beast article, that "she had no idea" what would happen.

It's a good example of why the Columbia has been criticized as being sensationalist, self-centered, manufactured outrage that distracts from the very real human rights violations happening in Gaza right now.

Don Wilson:

"I have noticed a significant increase in general laxity about PPE since COVID masking has been dropped. A significant % of OR staff (esp anesthesia & RTs) not bothering to mask inside actual OR even when sterile fields are open & set up.

Nurses inside OR generally much more consistent (they directly handle & set up sterile equipment).

I’ve seen unmasked anesthesiologists & RTs for emergency CS & gyne cases… I don’t get it. We mask to prevent contamination of open surgical wounds. Just because COVID mask mandates are over doesn’t mean INSIDE an operating room is a mask free zone.

Used to be that it was unthinkable to be unmasked inside an active OR. Even in the hallways during active OR time. It’s a sad commentary on the impact of the antimask stupidity spilling over to areas where it can impact quality & safety of the patient care environment.

I’m just one person who chooses to be fastidious about masking inside the hospital, I can’t take on the entire system. But it’s discouraging to see & I wonder how many patients go on to have nosocomial surgical infections because of relaxed cultures around masking now."

Yesterday I saw an article about Hantavirus prevention that didn't mention respiratory protection when cleaning up mouse poop. Just gloves, bleach, and wetting rather than sweeping. Which is better than nothing, but for a disease as dangerous as HPS, I'm going to put in the tiny extra effort of an N-95 also.

Construction workers are masking less around sawdust and worse.

The anti-mask brainrot runs deep.

Do the people who think that Jews are not an oppressed group know that the word “ghetto” was created specifically for us?

lol have people actually been saying that? “Diaspora” is a Greek word that was first recorded in the Septuagint, i.e. the Greek translation of the Hebrew bible.

Avatar
shofarsogood

I was once told not to use the word ghetto as a white person.

I was talking about the Warsaw Ghetto.

You know, the state-sanctioned area where Jews were forced to live in squalor and starve.

for anyone who’s curious abt the etymology.

In college, I was in a sociology class and the professor REFUSED to believe that the word "Ghetto" was originally used to denote an area of a city where Jews lived and instead only acknowledged the American understanding of it as "Black intercity Neighborhood" ( I went to school in the US). I had to straight up show him this Wikipedia page after class to verify this for him after a mini argument in class about how words change meaning over time but can still be used to denote an idea. In this case, where folks previously considered "undesirable" to a society lived.

He had the nerve to tell me that it's "Not about Jews anymore." And that WE "don't live in ghettos but other minorities do" as if we are not a minority to be considered. As if there aren't Jews that are poor or could possibly need to live there. As if we hadn't been there at all.

It's just funny that white people specifically (and others too) like to play a fun game called "the Jews are white and privileged until they're not white enough". It changes daily based on which it's worse to be. Is it worse for a Jew to be white or brown today? And thus, it is so. Is it worse for Jews to be persecuted first or does it not matter compared to how others have suffered since because it only effected the Jews?

It doesnt matter how liberal you are, you play this game too. My professor was a proud supporter of LGBTQ rights and was trans himself. Sure he was white, but he considered himself an ally to minority groups! You don't even have to realize it when you make these sorts of judgements. He sure didnt! Even the most open minded person can make judgements about people that are WRONG. It takes time to unlearn but I believe in you.
