The state of Kerala, India, is experiencing one of the worst floods since 1924. Over 20,000 houses have been damaged completely and 10,000 km of roads have been destroyed. Essential services have taken a hit, with shortages in medical supplies and drinking water reported from several places. A red alert has been issued in 11 of the 14 districts.
324 people have lost their lives since the rains started on May 29. Over half of them - 190 across 14 districts - have died in the last few days. Over 314,000 people have been moved to relief camps across the state with many more still missing or unreachable.
AnboduKochi is a non-profit organisation that has been one of the largest groups to provide relief support in Kochi, they need cash to transport all the donations they have been getting and make sure it gets to the relief camps.
keralarescue.in is an initiative by Govt. of Kerala, Kerala State IT Mission and IEEE Kerala Section for effective collaboration and communications between authorities, volunteers and public
Google has put out a consolidated and pin-dropped list of centres providing rescue ops, including shelters, food and water, medicine and essentials, volunteers, Jeep rescue and ambulances, among others.
In case you are looking for someone stranded in Kerala or have information about someone, use the Person Finder, which crowdsources information, to help.
Below are some ways to donate and help rebuild the lives of those affected.
The Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF) is 100% exempt from tax and “is an emergency assistance release mechanism granting immediate relief to families and individuals distressed by calamity, loss of life due to accidents and chronic diseases.”
Amazon lets users donate to one of three NGOs: Goonj, Habitat for Humanity and World Vision India. Once you select one of the three NGOs, you can choose what you want to donate by going through their wishlist
Flipkart allows users to donate to NGO Goonj
Paytm allows users to donate to the CMDRF and matches each donation made rupee for rupee
Oxfam India is on the ground providing dry food, clean water, shelter & long-term recovery.
British Malayali Kerala Floods Relief Appeal if you are living in the UK
Kerala Flood Relief Fund from USA if you are living in the US
Kerala Flood Relief Fund from SMYM Australia or Donate to Help Kerala Flood Victims by Australian India Foundation Incorporated if you are living in Australia
Milaap is a crowdfunding website
Ketto is also a crowdfunding website
Please consider donating any amount of money you can. If you know of any more resources and ways to help, please add to this post.

Hi! I am not sure if any of my followers saw, but I’ve been saying it is pretty bad for Kerala right now. (PS: I’m safe right now, and my family has moved to shelters or high-level areas).

Just in case, if you didn’t know, Kerala is a small state in the south-west part of India. We are mainly known for our cynicism, sarcasm, and our love of going to “The Gulf”. We are that part of India that had Muslims before the Mughals Invasion and Christians before the British Invasion and lived more-or-less in harmony with each other throughout. We love our socialism, our love of eating beef, and generally trying to resist the majoritarian principles of rest of the country.

And currently, Kerala is trembling under the fury of the monsoon

There has been incessant rain for the past three weeks, and most parts of Kerala are flooded. Till yesterday , 12 out of 14 districts were on Red Alert. All 44 rivers on this small strip of land was overflowing. As the rains continued, most lakes, reservoirs, and dams got filled and 33 dams were opened. And the outflow of these dams combined with rainwater rushed through towns and cities alike.

There has been landslides, sudden top soil movement and road collapses throughout the state, but especially in hilly areas. Most bridges, roads (including National Highways) are either completely destroyed or flooded beyond use.

Ten thousands of homes have been inundated and families have moved away.  People and entire cities & towns have been marooned.

This man is inside his home; neck-deep in water [he made this video and shared it through social media in an effort to get noticed and rescued]:

The Kochi International Airport is flooded and would be shut down for ten days. Railways are jammed and most roads are flooded. Most dams are open and cities have turned into lakes and rivers. The fact that there are water disputes with neighbouring states and state-level & national-level politics involved doesn’t help the common people of Kerala either.

This is not a water-tank over-flowing. It’s an entire dam that is overflowing (the Peringalkutthu dam, to be precise): .

The death toll is currently estimated to be about 300 and over 3 lakh individuals have been displaced. It is only because of high inter-connectivity and an educated population that the death toll has been under control.

And this is just the beginning:

  • Those who are rescued has to deal with extensive property damage.
  • Farmers have to deal with huge crop loss.
  • Most rescue shelters are running out of food and medicines
  • Food shortage will continue even after the floods as most of our food comes from Tamil Nadu/Andhra Pradesh, and the roads and railways connecting the two states are flooded.
  • Roads, Bridges and Communication channels will have to be rebuilt.
  • Outbreaks of water-borne diseases as water will get contaminated
  • Outbreaks of mosquito-born diseases like Dengue fever as stagnant water persists.

Large sections of Kerala is flooded. Kochi has come to a halt.

Seriously, we are in big trouble. So, if you can donate, please do. Small acts of kindness goes a long way. If not, please signal boost.

Interrupting my social media break to share this post. I’m heartbroken to see the damage done and can’t imagine how much time and patience is going to be needed to rebuild the state and let people resume their normal day to day lives.

If you’re considering donating, please do. I think every bit will count.

P.S -  Kodagu (Coorg) is also hit by similar floods but is receiving even less publicity than Kerala. I can’t even find any organization attempting to collect funds for flood-relief..

getting healthy as a student pt.1

Okay so this year I’ve been on a MISSION to get healthy since previously in year 9 through 10 I was developing extremely unhealthy eating habits and, was overweight, couldn’t perform in sport the way I wanted and was depressed. I know other people want advice as a young student trying to get healthy so here’s how I’ve gotten to where I am.

  1. I stopped buying unhealthy foods. Honestly this meant doing my RESEARCH and finding out what is good for my body and what isn’t. Writing a shopping list specific to the meals I knew I was going to make during the week and STICKING to this list.
  2. I joined sports I liked In my case this was going to weekly squash training, going on runs and doing heaps of interval training in my bedroom when I was crushed for time with a heavy workload.
  3. I replaced my granola bars with fruit Snacking is something I do! and something that helps me throughout the day but I realised that those protein/granola bars I was eating were LOADED with sugar and were truly not healthy for me! So I stopped buying them!
  4. I found a couple recipes I loved and rotated them! It’s about finding alternatives to the things you love and replacing them! e.g. whenever im on my period I halve a wrap, put some pasta sauce and cheese on it and put it on the sandwich press and have that instead of pizza with a heap of veg on the side!! Every now and again I get a heap of new recipes and change it up!
  5. I forgave myself and allowed myself to enjoy unhealthy foods This might sound counter intuitive to some but if I’m out with friends, I’ll buy chips and a salad!! I didn’t punish myself for enjoying these treats, it’s just something I ate! I remind myself that I don’t have these things often and move on!
  6. I started walking places That local shopping centre you need to go to for some supplies? Walk there! Your school is only a 30 minute walk? Go for it! Or even just going for a walk for the sake of going for a walk! Stuff like that is not only good for the soul, it can VASTLY improve your metabolism!!
  7. I became calorie conscious This meant I became AWARE of how many calories I was eating and how many I should be eating. I don’t count calories by any means, I’m just aware. This helped me realise that by eating ‘clean’ I was actually only eating around 1100 calories which was WAYYYYYY under the amount I should be eating for how active I am so I was able to increase my calories and feel SO much more energetic
  8. I started eating more protein So i’m ‘flexitarian’? I guess? I don’t eat meat but I sometimes eat fish when I’m in a bind and I rarely eat dairy. Increasing your protein will speed up your metabolism because the body expends more trying to digest it. I increased my protein by eating a source of protein in every meal, protein powder with breakfast, eggs with lunch and maybe dinner or even with tuna! You DEFINITELY don’t need meat in every meal, that’s not what I’m saying. In fact, eating meat in every meal is very bad for you! Find other ways of incorporating protein, whether it be with yoghurt, eggs or tofu!

if there’s any piece of our history that young LGBT people choose to learn about, please learn about the AIDS crisis

please learn about serophobia

please learn about how the “LGBT community” really came together as a form of protection, and as a last ditch effort for family, when a lot of our families had left our elders to die because of their gayness, transness, and HIV/AIDS status

don’t let our history die out. cishets tried so hard to erase us, don’t do it to yourself

Something I just learnt is to stop looking at life as something I need to perfect and I always need to be improving and instead look at it as a project. Everything I do is something fun I’m giving a go and everything that comes my way will come and go and I will be better for it. I will put on my thoughts and my attitude in the morning as if they were my clothes for the day. I don’t need to perfect my life and I don’t need to always be right but I do need to learn and evolve and choose everyday to be a better person than the last but accept that I will lapse at times and that’s perfectly okay. Sometimes it’s okay to just be okay.

How to express “a lot” in French 🇫🇷

We like overexaggeration and complexity when it comes to expressing quantity so here we go!

.

Beaucoup = the common “a lot”

Il y a beaucoup trop de sel dans la soupe

.

Énormement = a whole lot

Tu me manques énormément

.

Pas mal = quite a lot

Il y a pas mal de gens ici

.

La masse de = a massive amount of

Il y a la masse de places ici!

.

Une tonne de = a ton of

J’ai trouvé une tonne de pomme de terres ici

.

Une grande/grosse quantité = a big quantity

Il me faudrait une grosse quantité de pain

You either put in the time and effort it requires or you don’t. It’s not simple, not really; depression, exhaustion, anxiety, general ups and down, bad days will play their part. But you still need to get up and just do it™. You’ll either beat yourself up for failing or be encouraged by your progress and over time you’ll be in the same situation you are now (wishing you pushed through) or you’ll be closer to your goal (succeeding). Whatever you decide is your choice. One month from now where will you be?
