oh, i am finally old enough to know why my parents took so long to grab their coats. why they would ask us to get ready to go only to sit down for another round of coffee. what would i tell myself, at 10 years old? it’s okay. sit down with them too. take in the extra hour with your friend and her family. when you get home, write down every moment in your diary. one day you will be older and you will be waving goodbye to your best friend, and you will turn the key to start your beat up little car engine, and you will look back over your shoulder. her hair will be blowing in the wind and she will be beautiful and you will be, for a moment, struck by all of it. what you will feel is so wide and nameless that it will engulf you. and you will think of being 14 and kicking her under the table in math every time you wanted to whisper something behind the teacher’s back. you will think about how long the days felt, and how you could hold her hand whenever you wished, but you didn’t. and you will think about all of the people you could have lingered with. and you will wish, more than you have ever felt a wish, that the universe just gave you that - more time to linger. more time to say - i love you. i know i need to leave, but i don’t want to leave you. and when i go, i am leaving a piece of my heart that lingers too.

one more round of coffee. the days are so short, and you are so lovely.

Why you need to start reblogging fics:

Okay, saw a post about this, thought I would make a post explaining further. And this may make me sound like a bitch or ungrateful and that is not my intention. This is a conversation we, as a content consuming community, need to have—need to keep having.

And if you think we don’t need to have it, these are screenshots of notes on some of my fics—fics that have been posted for 7 months to 3 years. (And please keep in mind, I’ve been in the tumblr writing community for a while, so these numbers don’t even begin to correlate with new up-and-coming writers)

Does this seem right to you??? (the difference between likes and reblogs)

If you are saying ‘why yes, you are doing great. you have so many notes.’ you are not getting the point of this post—so let’s talk about it.

I appreciate the likes, believe me I do, but please understand: likes do nothing for content creators.

1. Let’s first talk about why reblogging is so important:

  • Tumblr works on the reblog system (it’s not like Instagram, twitter or tiktok). In order for content to spread and appear on people’s dashs, it needs to be reblogged. That is the only way for content to be seen.

2. Let’s also do a quick take on why people don’t reblog (this is just what I have come across/seen people say):

  • “I commented, isn’t that enough?” — comments are fantastic! I LOVE to hear what you have so say, but like…you can also comment on a reblog. A comment + reblog = a marriage proposal from me, I swear. Cuz just comments tend to say: liked it but it wasn’t good enough for me to share with others (-̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥᷄_-̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥᷅ )
  • “I don’t want people seeing what I read” — unless your conservative grandma is on here and you really don’t want her seeing you reblog gay smut, I’m sorry that’s a stupid excuse.
  • “I don’t want to clutter up my blog” — I’m sorry, what??? This is tumblr. We are not influencers on here. And if you’re tying to be, I gotta tell ya something, buddy: you’re on the wrong platform. But if it REALLY bothers you that much—I’ve seen some people make a sideblog where they reblog fics. Of course, this doesn’t give the same traction because those blogs tend to have less followers, but at least it’s something.
  • “It’s too much to scroll through” bruh, that’s why writers put the ‘keep reading’ line break in their posts. And if they don’t, well, that’s a whole separate issue.
  • “Tags are enough for content to get spread” — this is simply just not true. People don’t always search through tags and the tag they look under might not be one that the fic has. And, even if people do stalk the tags, the content that is at the top is content that has the most engagement. This doesn’t help creators that don’t already have some traction and it doesn’t do much even for those who do. And before you say, ‘go under recently posted’ - not many people do that and, even when they do, they still miss content because ✮ tumblr algorithm ✮ (◔_◔)

3. And let’s be real—

  • Most of the reblogs and feedback I receive comes from other writers that I have befriended.
  • “Support writers” doesn’t just mean “writers support writers” it means “content consumers, support writers.”
  • Other platforms like AO3, Wattpad, and/or FF.NET — buddy, it ain’t better over there. trust me, I’m on em’ all.

Why do you think so many writers disappear from writing community? Why do you think so many of them stop creating? Why do you think we rarely get new ones?

It’s because they put hours upon hours of their sweat, blood, and tears into motherfucking masterpieces and those masterpieces just end up at the bottom of the void.

Yes, yes writers should write for themselves, ultimately, but it’s nice to get some validation—to get someone saying ‘hey, yeah I’m here. I’m seeing you.”

And that is why I try my VERY hardest to reblog with a large comment!

So, please, content consumers, support your content creators.

Honestly, if CG artists unionising kills the use of CG in films, I don't see a downside.

I think CG artists being unionized will probably mostly hurt CG animated movies and Disney’s “live actors in greenscreen costumes on a greenscreen set that can’t even interact with eachother” genre. CG animation is currently full of movies done without care, which will become way less profitable, which is good. Disney’s treatment of live action actors needs to die yesterday, so that’s also good.

CGI has two upsides, however. The first is it can be used to enhance practical effects. I really like when this is done, it keeps the realism of practical effects and makes them fit seamlessly/able to do more. I suspect this is less time consuming than CGing an entire set, so it probably won’t go away, especially on high-budget movies.

The second upside is using cgi to add dangerous effects to movies (explosions, gunshots). It’s way safer to add muzzle flashes in post than shoot blanks, as proven on the set of Rust, and explosions are easy enough to film seperately and meld the images in post, or just CG the explosion with software. I don’t know if, with unionization, it will be cheaper for studios to use actual guns and explosions, and that’s the only possible downside (which is way less important than people making better wages).

THANK YOU FOR BRINGING UP THE SAFETY THING!!! In discussions of cgi, I keep seeing people say things like "the t-rex from the old Jurassic Park movie is so amazing and realistic and better than cgi!!" somehow forgetting that the animatronic they used fucking locked up every 15 minutes and a real flesh-and-blood human with only one life to give had to crawl inside and reset the damn thing at the risk of the hulking machine snapping and grinding him to death. EVERY FIFTEEN MINUTES.

Like yeah idk I think I would rather have a slightly inferior cgi t-rex in my movie made for entertainment purposes rather than having to risk some guy getting William Aftoned multiple times for the real practical effect dinosaur. Maybe if animatronics were safer, my opinion would be different, but PLEASE you guys, remember that the only problem with cgi is lack of unions. That's it. As an artistic medium, it's not necessarily better or worse than any other medium. It has its perks and its downsides like any other art form.

Artists also do better work when they're paid well, so that will shrink the gap even more, as the reblogger before me basically said. 👍

How Do I Do Stuff

The question was phrased a little strangely, and I don't want to embarrass the person by posting exactly what was said, but I'll answer it and hope this clears everything up.

I do almost all of my drawing by hand. No, I don't trace in Photoshop. Not a judgment on those who do, but I come from a generation of artists who did not use Poser programs or other digital tools. We learned to draw using a technique called the Sight Size method. I know a lot of people assume everyone - including the old masters - traced everything using optical tools, but while it is true some people did, it is just as true that most didn't, and you can draw with great accuracy if you learned how to draw the old fashioned way.

Sight Size breaks everything down into its barest components of geometric shapes and you build from there. Once you learn it, you never forget, and it applies to everything you will ever draw.

I learned it using a set of Famous Artist Course books my mom had since she was a kid, and they are still the gold standard. They're often on ebay. If I were you, I'd buy them.

I actually find using figure reference really annoying because I like exaggerations and modifications from reality in my final work.

This page from Neil Gaiman's Chivalry was drawn and painted without figure reference of any kind.

I don't know why people assume I trace all the time. If you were to try to use photographs to replicate these figures, you would find they are slightly off. There is no tracing here.

This is not to say I never use reference. This page, for example, was referenced from a photo of my mother. Isn't she pretty.

But this page of Sir Galaad was drawn and painted without reference.

He's pretty, too.

If he were real, I'm sure a lot of people would be very happy about it. But he's not. And had I reference, the art would have gone a lot faster. I had a time trying to nail this face that is very alive in my head but doesn't really exist.

Back in the ancient days, all cartoonists had to learn to draw and paint extemporaneously because reference was limited and digital tools didn't exist. While some high end artists had photography studios and professional models with costume and sets on hand, small fry like me were limited to what was in the house or available at my small local library, which was no bigger than a few rooms of my current house.

Artists kept extensive "morgue files" or "swipe files" which were collected from magazine clippings and photographs so we would have as much of what we might need on hand for quick reference. These ephemera collections could get unwieldy. I have thousands of photographs I've simply never sorted. I finally dumped most of my files this past year.

Have I ever traced anything? Of course, especially if I have to re-use a shot or setting over and over. Making extra work for myself is just silly. It's my job to make pictures, not to perform magical feats, like copying one shot after another over and over without making a mistake.

However, for almost 15 years of my career, I refused to copy or trace anything, and did not even own a lightbox. On the one hand, that forced me to learn to carefully examine what I saw. On the other hand, it was a stupid hill on which many deadlines died.

Only after I realized many professional artists had lightboxes and overhead projectors did I finally break down and get one.

The one thing I use my lightbox for more than anything is for tracing my thumbnail sketches to the final drawing paper. Instead of trying to capture the liveliness of the original sketch by copying what I see - only bigger - I blow the thumbnail up to the size I want the final art to be, then I trace over the thumbnail using a lightbox onto the final drawing paper.

Here's a look at thumbnails from the graphic novel Neil Gaiman's Snow, Glass, Apples.

I enlarged these on my computer to fit onto 11"x14" paper, and traced the thumbs before finishing the art which was drawn in pen and ink and colored in Photoshop.

While I obviously made some changes, the essence of the thumbs is there in the final work. Tracing my thumbs retains some of the looseness of the original sketches, which is often lost otherwise.

So, there is a valid purpose to tracing at times, though in my opinion, too much tracing can weaken drawing ability, substitute for developing skills, and make the work kind of stiff.

If you want to, I'm not your judge. But it's weird to me that people think I must be faking my skills in some way.

Ironically, the word cartoon comes from the Italian word cartone, which is a large heavy sheet of paper - also, the origin of the word carton.

Preparatory sketches were made on this paper which was then transferred to the final work surface via either tracing or by stamping little holes in the paper through which dust was sprinkled, recreating the contours of the drawing for the artist to follow.

So the origin of the word cartoon comes from a process often used...for tracing.

IMPORTANT: TUMBLR & FANFICTION

Alright kids, listen up because @staff have pulled off a corker of a hot mess and have decided to add "Community Labels". I guess they've decided we can't be trusted to add our own warnings and people can't make sensible choices with what they engage with.

But why does it matter to me?

Tumblr have made labels AN OPT IN SITUATION which means every single blog here is automatically set to hide any triggering content

If you want to continue to be able to access and read fanfiction PLEASE go into your settings and click "show" on at least the "Mature" and "Sexual Themes" labels!!

ALSO IOS USERS: there's an extra fun "Hide additional content" bit just to really try and block us from any hopes of success. Make sure you opt out of that too otherwise I think content will be blocked on the mobile app!

Attached to this post are screenshots from my settings so you guys know what to look for. I could only find it on my desktop settings and not on the mobile app (for now at least)

[I feel like I should add I don't want to sound like I'm pressuring anyone... if you don't want to see certain content obviously keep it hidden and protect yourselves BUT this post is mainly targeted at the horny little gremlins I write for who will be suddenly deeply confused when their smut supply is cut off]

Since the fandom is still somehow on my dash, I gotta admit I do marvel at the sheer range of Things People Are Horny For that the show Arcane could provide for. Like how do you manage to make a show where absolutely everyone is hot, but in such a varying range of tastes that no two characters look too similar to each other. Like walking into one of those oddly specific novelty stores where they've got like idk every single scent of scented candles you could think of, and the clerk walks up to you like

"Hello, feel free to browse through our merch. We've got himbos, high-class ladies, villanous gentlemen, borderline personality disorder, hot dads, the biggest fucking milf that you have ever seen, five flavours of Women Who Can Beat You Up, and the most fragile tragic soft-spoken wet eggshell bones shred of a man physically capable of existing. I want one of those scenes in a dude bro film where “tomboy” chick has to wear a dress to go undercover or whatever, but instead of the guys drooling as she walks down the stairs, they’re like “k. U need to stop. Go put the cargo pants back on. You look super uncomfortable and awkward in that. Brutus, you go be the fake prostitute.”

I’m just imagining this super ripped guy called Brutus being like ‘YESSS!!! I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO BE THE FAKE PROSTITUTE!! Now is my time to shine!!’

so I got inspired… and had to make a comic….

This tweet has changed my life btw

Here’s a guide of what I’ve determined the meanings to be

walking around - self explanatory

fellowship - hanging out with friends

deliciousness - having something tasty

transcendence - feeling that you have reached a different level of some sort; alternatively, when you do one of the other delights to the extreme and feel really good about it. (you know transcendence when it happens)

goofing - having a good laugh at smth

amelioration - working towards the betterment of something, for example, working on a skill you hope to improve

coitus - fuckin’

enthralment - becoming incredibly engaged in something, hyper focusing on something

wildcard - anything that you feel was a delight in your day that does not fit one of the above delights

“Imagine having a child that refuses to hug you or even look you in the eyes”

Imagine being shamed, as a child, for not showing affection in a way that is unnatural or even painful for you. Imagine being forced, as a child, to show affection in a way that is unnatural or even painful for you. Imagine being told, as a child, that your ways of expressing affection weren’t good enough. Imagine being taught, as a child, to associate physical affection with pain and coercion.

Avatar

As a preschool special ed para, this is very important to me. All my kids have their own ways of showing affection that are just as meaningful to them as a hug or eye contact is to you or me.

One gently squeezes my hand between both of his palms as he says “squish.” I reciprocate. When he looks like he’s feeling sad or lost, I ask if I can squish him, and he will show me where I can squish him. Sometimes it’s almost like a hug, but most of the time, it’s just a hand or an arm I press between my palms. Then he squishes my hand in return, says “squish,” and moves on. He will come ask for squishes now, when he recognizes that he needs them.

Another boy smiles and sticks his chin out at me, and if he’s really excited, he’ll lean his whole body toward me. The first time he finally won a game at circle time, he got so excited he even ran over and bumped chins with me. He now does it when he sees me outside of school too. I stick out my chin to acknowledge him, and he grins and runs over and I lean down for a chin bump.

Yet another child swings my hand really fast. At a time when another child would be seeking a hug, she stands beside me and holds my hand, and swings it back and forth, with a smile if I’m lucky. The look on her face when I initiate the hand swinging is priceless.

Another one bumps his hip against mine when he walks by in the hallway or on the playground, or when he gets up after I’m done working with him. No eye contact, no words, but he goes out of his way to “crash” into me, and I tell him that it’s good to see him. He now loves to crash into me when I’m least expecting it. He doesn’t want anything, really. Just a bump to say “Hi, I appreciate you’re here.” And when he’s upset and we have to take a break, I’ll bump him, ask if he needs to take a walk, and we just go wander for a bit and discuss whatever’s wrong, and he’s practically glued to my side. Then one more bump before we go back into the room to face the problem.

Moral of the story is, alternative affection is just as valid and vitally important as traditional affection. Reciprocating alternative affection is just as valid and vitally important as returning a hug. That is how you build connections with these children.

This is so goddamn important.

I verbally express affection. A LOT.

My husband… doesn’t. I don’t know why. For the longest time part of me wondered if it meant he loved me less.

At some point I told him about a thing I had done as a kid. Holding hands, three squeezes means ‘I Love You’.

Suddenly he’s telling me I Love You all the time.

Holding my hand, obviously, but also randomly.

taptaptap

on my hand, my shoulder, my butt, my knee, whatever body part is closest to him, with whatever part of him is closest to me

All the time.

More often than I ever verbally said it.

It’s an ingrained signal now, I can tap three times on whatever part of him, and get three taps back in his sleep. Apparently I do the same.

It’s made a huge difference for us.

People say things differently.

People say things differently.

thinking about how orpheus turning to look back at eurydice isn’t a sign of mortal frailness but a sign of love

Avatar

“Eurydice, dying now a second time, uttered no complaint against her husband. What was there to complain of, but that she had been loved?” ― Ovid, Metamorphoses

This is true no matter the version you're reading.

1. Eurydice trips and Orpheus turns to help her because he loves her.

2. Orpheus cannot hear Eurydice behind him, and fearing that he's been tricked, turns to make sure she's there.

3. Orpheus makes it out of the Underworld, and so full of love and excitement to be with Eurydice, turns to embrace her, forgetting that they both need to be out of the Underworld.

No matter what happens in the story, Orpheus loses Eurydice because his love for her compels him to look.

Orpheus, I can forgive you, then, There’s not a soul alive who wouldn’t have looked back

The Descent, by Tyler King

Don’t forget Gluck’s opera, where Eurydice doesn’t know Orpheus is forbidden to look back, Orpheus is also forbidden to tell her, she assumes he must not love her anymore, and Orpheus finally looks back to reassure her of his love because he can’t bear her anguish.

In that version in particular, but possibly in all retellings, a part of us wants Orpheus to look back, because his failure proves his love.

What gets me is that Orpheus’s love for  Eurydice is the reason why he descended after her in the first place... but its also the reason he failed. Had he loved her a little less they would have made it out. Had he loved her a little less and he never would have gone down after her at all.

Enamored Masterlist

Summary: Everything you heard about matters of heart and desire told you the same thing; love could lead to heartbreak at best and disastrous results at worst.

Yet, you were convinced that everyone was wrong. They had to be, because love was supposed to make everyone happier, no confusion or pain in sight.

Regardless of how naive it sounded, you were sure that you were ready to fall in love and lose yourself in the infamous bliss.

That assumption right there was a terrible mistake, though.

You were nowhere near ready.
