every dollar counts
Do you like having a one stop website for information that won’t display annoying ads? Donate to Wikipedia.
Crowdfunding things that add value to the world, like wikipedia, AO3, PBS = good. Kanye crowdfunding his latest album = bad.
Donate to Wikipedia to keep that site going!! As much as teachers hate it, it is really very helpful and an important site!!
Keep it as free, keep it well kept! Donate!
It’s a really good site, it’s not what is was only a few years ago. Everything now has to be sources or sometimes they won’t even accept the edits or article put up. And many of the people who edit and write these pages are professors that realize and know that the people reading these articles are not scholars 9/10 times. Wikipidia is great and you should donate!
wikipedia has more than enough money to run their servers and doesn’t pay the people who actually write the articles so they can fuck off for all i care. if wikipedia is gonna go bust, we can just archive and rehost since the license allows that
I don’t donate to Wikipedia either because I prioritize activist-focused funds that don’t have the kind of mass appeal to raise a lot of money, and Wikimedia really isn’t struggling or about to go bust at all.
But, ya know, for the record: wikimedia is pretty open about everything they do including their financials and the salaries of their highest ranking staff. The largest cut of their money goes to staff, which is programmers and administrative but also moderators and content development.
Over the years (too late by their own admission) Wikimedia realized that when a lot of your volunteers are your typical white male computer enthusiast, you end up with a hostile culture towards women and minorities, which is reflected in the content. Over the past years they have sought to change that and a lot of the moderation they hired was specifically focused on improving the culture in the discussion boards and stimulating content by and about women and minorities. Along with freedom of information advocacy, that’s part of the ‘awards and grants’ segment in their financials. It also has specific offices by country.
When checking out their data, remember that it’s not just Wikipedia that they’re hosting but a whole group of open-information platforms:
WikiBooks offers free books, Wikimedia Commons is a massive database of free images (really good for artists and educators, go check it out), wikidata strives to make research data freely available, etc. Lots of great stuff here.
Now I don’t agree with everything Wikimedia does, I don’t think they’ve completely got that toxic masculinity problem fixed yet in their communities, and I’m certainly not going to defend specific figures in their budget, you can go figure that out all that by yourself if you’re interested. I just wanted to show that it is actually all online.
ps: the fact that we can archive and rehost everything they make is actually a direct result of their commitment to open and open-source information so that’s actually a really cool thing about them.
