You notice that your friend has fresh self harm marks...

DO:

  • Ask “are you okay?”
  • Ask “are you going to be okay?”
  • Say “hey, just wanted to let you know I’m always here for you”

DON’T:

  • Point to the marks
  • Say “OH MY GOD” or “HOLY SHIT” or anything of the sorts
  • Make a huge deal
  • Yank up their sleeve / pant leg / reveal the marks more than they already are
  • Pull them closer to get a closer look
  • Make them feel bad about it
  • Act like they hurt you / let you down
  • Make them “promise to never do it again” (Because that’s just unrealistic)
