Exagerated language is a huge part of romance as a genre. It's necessary to give the exagerated, romanticized feeling. It effectively serves as rose colored glasses. It helps build and maintain sexual tension. It's an incredibly useful tool in creating a visual image for the reader to follow.

Please stop looking at completely normal terminology and curling your lip in disgust. Just because its not the way you would tell that story doesn't mean the story is told wrong.

I want to talk about, Gortash's outfit. It looks "fancy" at first glance, but really it's a uniform.

His coat, it's a trenchcoat. Originally developed for the army for the soldiers in the trenches, hence the name.

His trousers are jodhpur cut riding breeches, originally designed for horse riding, then used by the military cavalry (also called Galliffet trousers). They gave room for movement and could be worn to fit into jackboots. Because they were not only super practical but also looked so stylish and cool they became a status symbol. (that's the very short version of it).

His Tyrannical Jackboots are pretty self-explanatory.

Why give him a cane? Only for posing, or maybe it's a baton.

The material. It's not something luxury like the nobility would wear. It's leather. It's durable and though.

He probably sleeps straight like a plank in his simple single bed. Too much luxury would make him weak.

what if that part of the story was treated with the actual emotional weight that it deserves?

like, "you made them a hero...and then you let them become a martyr. if they'd stayed by my side, i would've protected them."

he'd be fucking pissed. absolutely livid, that they let you sacrifice yourself, and they call themselves your friends. It's an utterly irrational reaction, because you made that choice, but he is furious nonetheless.

but then withers would bring you back, and you'd be naked and shaking and stunned to be alive again, and gortash takes off his no fear coat and covers you with it.

and then, gone is that smooth, unwavering confidence and unshakeable, haughty demeanor. he is suddenly shaking too, and he's realizing, he wasn't ready to lose you again.

and now that you're back, again, despite all odds, his emotions are too powerful.

especially after months of wearing that coat to keep his grief from consuming him.

and you know what, while i'm being soppy and stupid.

he falls to his knees, and takes their face in his hands, and he says, without his silly little preening nobleman voice, in an honest to GOD, rough, weak little gasp:

"you shouldn't have left me."

and you know he isn't talking about leaving them at wyrm's rock.

just over a year ago, @saturdaysky commissioned me with an absolutely outstanding shadowgast prompt; namely, 'Caleb helping Essek put on a fancy outfit'. i'm sure you can imagine how ecstatic i was about it (just look at that line, every single word in it is designed to make me go heart eyes), and i'm finally finished and excited to post this bad boy. i hope you guys enjoy this picture too and my very optimistic wish is that it inspires all sorts of lovely stories in your minds 😏

sky gave me a beautiful prompt and a specific atmosphere/mood to depict, but was very patient and generous about letting me go wild on the actual posing, colors and details, so naturally i did 😂 my idea of using a mirror in the composition was admittedly rather ambitious, and lead me to reading up quite a bit on optics, the physics of reflections and reflections in art specifically (as well as the history of zippers and other closures!), so not only was this commission a delight from the point of view of its topic, but i also learned a fair amount of new stuff while working on it. honestly speaking, i like to think that the bookworm wizards would approve of my little adventure.
