finally doing an intro post (yay!)

call me Orange, they/them

hardcore maladaptive daydreamer and aspiring writer, auDHD, loveless aroace (and probably aplatonic too). These are also mostly what I post about.

Most commonly used tags

#queer stuff: anything queer-related (nowadays mostly aro & loveless stuff)

#neurodivergent: anything neurodivergency-related (mostly autism & adhd stuff)

#madd: anything MaDD-related that is NOT paracosm stuff

#paraportal: paracosm stuff, whether mine or not

#the orange dimension: my paracosm's tag

#writing: anything writing-related

#my writing, #my art: pretty much self-explanatory

if you need me to tag anything, feel free to shoot me an ask/DM and I'll see what I can do!

Asks, DMs, interactions

Any form of interaction is highly encouraged and appreciated! My asks are open, feel free to drop in any time you like (especially if it's about the aforementioned topics). Be warned though that it might take me a while to respond, depending on energy levels and free time.

I also don't mind being tagged in tag games/chains however my brain's a little bitch and I almost always forget to reply to them. So if you ever tag me and I don't reply, know that I'm really sorry and I live in shame

Here's to the people who can't get the words on the page. The people who are too tired after all life throws at them to write. The people who are blocked. The people who are burnt out. The people who can't write because of physical or mental illnesses. The people who don't know why they can't write. And the people struggling with all those other things that get in the way of writing and make it seem or be impossible.

You're still a writer, you're still an artist. And you matter. This world is better since you're in it. Thank you for wanting to write, even if you can't right now. I hope you and your words find each other soon.

"Amatonormativity permeates more than TV shows and books. It is woven into our legal rights, creating forms of discrimination that become more and more apparent as people age. Romantic love within marriage confers privileges that other forms of devotion cannot, including over 1,100 laws that benefit married couples at the federal level. Spouses can share each other’s health insurance, as well as military, social security, and disability benefits. They can make medical decisions for each other. Companies grant bereavement leave for spouses, no questions asked, but there will be more hesitation if leave is requested for a mere friend. It is possible to marry a stranger and give them your health insurance but not possible to give health insurance to a parent...

Criteria based on sex made sense when the main purpose of marriage was to merge fortunes and produce children, but today...marriage is more about a match of devotion than a match of trade. In many cases, the point is no longer to create an heir and a spare. Plenty of married couples don’t have children (or sex, for that matter), and bad marriages with little caring are common...

Offering legal and social benefits only to the romantically attached suggests that the mere presence of romantic feeling elevates the care and deserves special protections, even though friendship and other forms of care, which can come with less obligation, can include more love, more freely given. Therefore, the legal and social privileges of marriage should be extended to all mutually consenting adults who wish for them...

'In terms of policy, marriage law really reaches into all areas of law, like tax and immigration and property,' ... 'It doesn’t matter if it’s different-sex only or same-sex marriage, so long as we restrict marriage to romantic and sexual partners we will ensure amatonormativity.' Reforming marriage law by abolishing it altogether or extending marriage-like rights to friends (to small groups or networks) is one way to eradicate discrimination."

"Based on data gleaned from the nearly 10 million military dependents it insures, the U.S. Department of Defense has repeatedly called the evidence supporting ABA “weak,” noting there is no research to determine whether the small number of participants who show improvement — 15% — do so because of treatment or simply because a child has matured. After a year of the therapy, the department reported to Congress in 2019, 76% of 16,000 participating autistic children saw no change, and 9% worsened."

Okay before we get anyone on here saying "water is wet", here are some other bullet points about the article.

  • The article uses proper terminology and actually defines stimming, masking, and many other words that neurotypical people may or may not know (re autism)
  • The data that the article is based off of includes first hand accounts from autistic people who have gone through ABA. The researchers even used ASAN (autism self advocacy) as a resource! Actual autistic people shared their stories!!! And they believed us!!!!!
  • It explains WHY autistic people have a hard time with ABA, which is incredible. Not just the fact that it's akin to training a dog, but the psychology of it, and how it's overstimulating and degrading
  • There's a part that does quote from Auti$m $peaks spokespeople, BUT it's because they're leading into how neurotypical parents see ABA most often as a "saving grace" to get a "normal child" and then goes on to tell more about how autistic children perceive ABA, both during and after treatment
  • One family's story tells of how a mother noticed her autistic son would actually hide when she went to turn the computer on for ABA therapy (this was during COVID lockdown) and how she realized something was off because of that. She canceled ABA and found an alternative (called Floor Time) where the child actually directs the play, and the therapist/teacher goes along with what the kid wants/does!
  • There's a really cool bit on why ABA is usually the only thing available to parents, and the answer is Shitty American Healthcare/Insurance Companies!
  • It notes that ABA therapists don't really have strict training requirements. You can do a quick online course and become an ABA therapist. It does not require a college degree. That should horrify you.
  • There's another parallel study with its own data coming out in 2025

Honestly, this whole article is a gem. Remember, while "water is wet" studies seem trivial, we need them in order to get our side of the story taken seriously. Research with credible data that backs up what we've been saying is important!

TL; DR?

Huge study with lots of input from autistic people tells us ABA sucks!

Thank you for this addition. A better encouragement for this article than I managed!

ngl I'm not a fan of how the very necessary discussion of how autistic girls (and many poc for that matter, not that we usually remember this) often end up masking hard due to the pressure to "be ladylike" or "not be too angry" and therefore end up being seen as "very polite" and "mature for your age" and so on and so forth is morphing into being less about how social pressures may impact how autism presents and more about saying "so there's Girl Autism and there's Boy Autism and Girl Autism makes you nice and polite and pleasant but Boy Autism makes you gross and annoying and rude and offputting and no it's not ableist at all to say that being overly excitable or trying to get a turn to talk when you don't know when your turn is or struggling with arbitrary rules is rude and annoying because Girl Autism exists uwu"

it sucks that I think genuinely a lot of antis don't know what proship actually means and refuse to learn bc they have such a visceral reaction to the word itself. I think that if I were to ask people over the age of 15 if they thought it was ok to tell people to kill themselves over fictional content Most of them would probably say no. and literally all the time I see ppl posting "omg I love toxic yuri/yaoi😍😍😍" with proship dni in their bio Girl what are you talking about. Fun fact: if you think people should be able to consume whatever fictional content they want without backlash or you enjoy toxic dynamics in fiction, You are a proshipper
