Who’s Who in the hunterkat flock!

Pepper! Little man was rescued June 13, 2021. He’s very shy but loves to sing. He bonds strongly with other budgies and is very sweet to them.

Jasmine! This girl was rescued November 13, 2022. She has the biggest personality and loves to preen hair and hang out on your shoulder. She also likes to bite earlobes.

Rocco! This goofy little green cheek was rescued 2/22/22. He has a lot of anxiety from his previous home, and as a result he does pluck. He gets up to all kinds of trouble all the time. I call him my little stinker man.

Testing this sweet bird now :)

Okay some people are asking about what to do when you rescue a feral pigeon. I didn't keep Argra since he turned out to be a boy but he is now living a nice happy life a house pet in Kansas City. I'll walk you through my process

Arga was a racing homer/feral I rescued in 2021 after he self rescued into a ladies chicken coop and seemed unable to fly away.

First I grabbed a small and easy to clean carrier and picked up bird after sending an email to my vet that I would need this rescue pigeon to be seen soon. I also ordered a rapid salmonella test.

I picked up the bird and brought it home. I immediately did a pesticide dip (others who are not confident in doing this can use a spray until they see their vet) so no mites or lice would potentially get on my other birds. I then set up a quarantine area downstairs which is somewhere none of my birds go or get into contact with. He basically stayed in the carrier I picked him up in so he couldn't contaminate multiple areas.

I also preemptively wormed the bird with ivermectin during this time and saw lots of round worms expelled. Ivermectim would also help kill any blood sucking pests that weren't killed in the dip.

I gave the bird food, water, a small amount of enriched red pigeon grit and left it alone for the rest of the day only checking on them to keep their cage hygienic or to refill their food and water. I used puppy pads for easy clean up.

I noticed Arga had a swollen wing and kept note of that mentally to tell the vet and didn't try to wrap it on my own as I am inexperienced. The swelling went down on its own after a few days and didn't need intervention. The salmonella test came in as after a few days and Arga tested negative so I could relax a bit.

A few days later my vet was able to see Arga. Arga had an injury to the swollen wing and a heart murmur (likely genetic) that thankfully didn't need any special treatment. Arga's fecal and throat swab was clean and they were at a good weight so they were cleared by my vet.

Despite that I waited intill the quarantine ended before feeling comfortable letting Arga mingle with my other pigeons freely. Arga got along with my other birds well and despite their trauma (their location, breed, and injuries line up with being a dog training survivor) they were very friendly and handlable.

After the initial vet care Arga didn't need any special treatment or anything like that they were just like any other pigeon I owned before I rehomed them.
