the thing is, a lot of ~bad behaviour~ in animals is self-advocacy. if your animals are ~acting out~ you're supposed to pay attention

alternatively: a lot of ~bad behaviour~ in animals is perfectly normal expression of natural traits, it just doesn't match your expectation

your cat is a primarily crepuscular animal that has developed for hundreds of thousands of years to hunt (with extreme efficiency) throughout the day and night when risk of harm from other predators is low 😭 your cat is going nuts at 4am because it is a cat 😭

being part of dog health fb groups is great because it really broadens your horizons and gives a lot of context across breeds and teaches a lot of nuance in interpretation

and sometimes it lets you go 'holy heck im not in your breed but if i were i wouldnt touch ur programme w a 10 foot pole and a kite'

i would give the border collies a review but valyria has this very over the top, dramatic, hate for feet. she will grumble if feet are near her, jump up and move away, and shoot you dirty looks. she passed this on to her children, apparently. kpop could count because he doesn't care and would be a foot warmer, only any time kpop lays near you he proceeds to roll onto his back and wiggle and worm because he's so excited galli is not a foot warmer. he is an entity that looks like a dog to be survived. he does not cuddle or pretend to be a foot warmer. he just wants to know when you're gonna play tuggies

hey everyone, i know this is a silly gimmick blog but i feel i need to clarify that zionists aren't welcome here. people who think the violence in gaza right now is in any way justified or proportional to october 7 and support the genocide being committed against palestinians need to get off my blog. leave.

people who use this situation as an excuse to be antisemitic also need to get the fuck out of here. it is never okay to be antisemitic and trying to use your support for palestine as a shield is pathetic. i dont want you around and i do not like you. when i find you i will block you. save us both some time and just unfollow me right now.

i just wanted to make my position clear. free palestine. 🇵🇸

no additional commentary needed on that last post but it has inspired a tangent.

i would consider myself a LIMA trainer, i work at a training facility that advertises itself as LIMA, and i take the “L” and the “M” very seriously.

however

i work with self-described LIMA trainers who… also… describe themselves as “balanced.” and it literally does not matter how much learning theory they know or how many positive reinforcement strategies they mindlessly follow, what they mean by “balanced”—in actual practice—is “i’m not capable of being patient with and kind to dogs all the time and i will not curb or police that impulse at all.” they’re “balanced” because they don’t rely on correction… except that when they do administer a “correction”, it’s almost always a nasty knee jerk reaction rooted not in a carefully considered training plan but in frustration and ill will.

i came from “““balanced””” training, i worked in that environment for the better part of two decades: that has always, always been the way. even though it was drilled into me that corrections should neeeever come from an ✨emotional place✨, i repeatedly watched mentors and peers take their emotions out on dogs in ways they (and i, at the time) didn’t even register.

so i guess my thesis is “no they can’t control their impulses and fuck labels”??

ok you know how the training tool works and how it should be used. but do you have the personal control and wherewithal to use it fairly and gently. how good is your impulse control sir

and this isnt some high horse type of deal, this is coming from someone who sometimes has to end walks (!) early because while i do all of these things for my dogs to do well, i recognize that sometimes my dogs aren't doing well with me

it IS however meant as a personal insult to that very particular yet prominent type of dog quote unquote trainer who'll go 'non-correctional training doesnt work, dogs dont get it, you need a higher calibre' because if you cant properly place rewards i personally wouldnt trust you to properly place corrections either, but go off i guess
