Summer in the City: THE LIVE SHOW Part 3 Day 2 PHOTOS TO COME!

Hello Everyone!
So day 2 of the convention is offically over! And what a day it’s been. Like predicted we were pretty much non-stop from 11am, when we headed into the centre.
Unlike yesterday, we decided to have breakfast in the convention centre as well as planning our day out. Once we had eaten we headed to get our wristbands for our Meet and Greets later that day. Compared to last year the…

Hello everyone!

Welcome back to the ‘live’ updates of Summer in the City 2018. So the convention have officially started! Yes Summer in the City is now a go with the creators and industry day already done and dusted.

We didn’t quite know what our day would turn out like considering we had basically overbooked ourselves with not the convention but also another theatre show AND a special surprise.

So considering how busy our day was, we still had time to fit in a cheeky breakfast when we got up at 8am. The free-fall that our breakfast experience meant that we needed a cup of tea after our breakfast in the quiet of our room before heading over to the ExCel to begin our day.

Last year, we didn’t go to the creators day so naturally we were a bit dubious about what we were to expect. It was fairly quiet with no more than a couple of hundred people there at the most, however the creators that were already there were lovely!

Now I’m not the most experienced YouTube watcher anymore. I used to watch several people and knew who someone was and what not but now a days I tend to stick to mainly Twitch, I know… funny for someone who is currently at a YOUTUBE convention…, but the people who we did say hi too were so kind and friendly. BananaJamana and Live the Adventure were just to name a couple.

Not only did we meet and see some amazing people, we also did some pretty awesome things too such as riding The Waltzer…

and make customised Mickey Mouse ears!

We left the convention and headed back to the room for about 3pmish before getting ready for our next adventure.

Now this was something that I had seen before but never thought I was brave enough to do it, however yesterday afternoon while on the train up to London, we decided to book up to do Up at the O2. This experience allows you to climb OVER the O2 arena in London! YES I CLIMBED THE F***ING O2 ARENA AND I’M TERRIFIED OF HEIGHTS!

It has to be one of the most amazing experiences of my entire life! while initially terrified, once on the actual climb it was fantastic as were the views.

Finally to end a very busy but amazing day, we headed to the Arts Theatre to see Knights of the Rose which was just brilliant! I will be doing a full review on that later on at some point.

So that concludes Day 2 (well actually Day 1 of the actual convention) I will be editing this when home most likely as it is nearly 1:30am and I have no idea if any of this actually makes sense or is making decent content. Until tomorrow!

Hello everyone!

So the adventure has begun for Summer in the City 2018. For those of you who don’t know, Summer in the City is the UK’s online video festival which is celebrating it’s 10th anniversary this weekend!

Last year I had the fortune of attending the convention, but I did not get around writing a post about it. This year, however, I have decided to live blog the event. When I mean ‘live blog’ what I shall be doing is posting what has happened each day and including any photos.

To kick things off we were EXCEEDINGLY bored on the train up to London. So in order to entertain ourselves we started booking things for us to do over the weekend as well as the convention. Heather had already bought tickets for Bat Out of Hell for tonight so all we had to do was sort out what we wanted to do tomorrow night. In the process of browsing and also discussing what talks we were interested in this weekend, we somehow managed to book tickets to Knights of the Rose and also Up the O2…. Yes. We are climbing over the O2 arena (save us!)

We arrived in London around 2pm and headed straight to our hotel just a few minute walk away from London ExCel. The hotel we are staying in, ibis, is fairly modern compared to the usual Premier Inn’s we are normally accustomed too. So to kill a bit of time before we headed out for the evening. When I say kill a bit of time I mean answering my parents request of photographs of the room, by playing Where’s Waldo- Heather Edition.

Our evening took us into Central London where we dined at Garfunkel’s before heading to the Dominion Theatre to see Bat Out of Hell the musical. Having already seen this once before I’m not gonna give a detailed review of it in this post. There had been a few casting changes not only for the night but for the latest version of the production, but none-the-less the production was still amazing!

So that concludes our first day in London. Although not much has happened we are well and truly shattered and thus are off to bed at nearly 2am. Stay with us through this exciting journey to celebrate some of the most inspiring creators on YouTube of 2018!

Tune in tomorrow for more!

IT'S TIME FOR THE LIVE BLOGGING! Join me on my adventure at SitC2018 'Summer in the City: THE LIVE SHOW Part 1' Hello everyone! So the adventure has begun for Summer in the City 2018. I Solemly Swear That I'm Up to No Good....

Hello Everyone
Just a quick update to say that I am alive and well and to full heartedly apologise for my absence and the lack of posts. I have been extremely busy finishing off University and also starting full time at my current job. But I wanted to let you all know that there are some exciting things to come this summer on my blog! (god that sounds cheesey…)
First of all there will be a brand…

When you have elliminated all which is impossible then whatevere remains, however improbable must be the truth. – Sherlock Holmes, The Sign of Four (Sir Aruthur Conan Doyle 1890)

Firstly I would like to appologise just for how late this post is going up. I was meant to post it during November but was swamped with University work and work in general.

It is that time of year again for another convention! Just over a year ago, I attended the 2nd Sherlocked Convention in London at the ExCel centre. Last year’s success and enjoyment was truly incredable! Safe to say I loved every single minute of it! So when the convention was announced earlier this year I was eager to go again! However there was a slight difference this time. For Sherlocked Convention 2017, we were heading to Birmingham and the Hilton Metropole Hotel.

Yes! that is right I would be travelling just over 3 hours to get to Birmingham to stay in a hotel that was totally out of my league! But I was not alone. I was joined by Heather once again!

So our journey began on Friday 27th October just after 2pm when our train departed from Southampton Central. I would like to give my first shoutout to Nicky, the lovely girl we saw at Southampton trains tation who’s chair was Tardis and Sherlock themed. COOLEST. CHAIR. EVER!!! We actually bumped into her a few times throughout the convention and who I conntacted on Tumblr when we got back! But nevertheles, it would be a long 2.5 hours to Brimingham, most of which was me and Heather watching our Halloween videos which we had filmed earlier that week for her Youtube channel.

*TIME SKIP TO WHERE WE HAD ARRIVED, CHECKED IN AND HEADED DOWN TO RECEPTION DRINKS*

As part of our package we got the chance to have evening recpetion drinks with some of the guests who were attending. A lot of the guests, such as Louise Brealey and Jonathan Aris, didn’t arrive until late Friday Night, so therefore didn’t attend. But those who did attend where such good sports! All questions that were asked where answered with detail and all the guests were lovely! For my first reception drinks I had the lovely pleasure of chatting with Sian Brooke, Una Stubbs, Gordon Kennedy and Lisa McAllister.

  • Sian Brooke was wonderful! Not only did we speak about her role as Eurus in Sherlock but I also mentioned that I saw her in Hamlet back in 2015 when she played Ophelia. She said thank you to my comment about it being amazing before saying that she hasn’t actually seen it yet! *GASPS* I know I was just as shocked as you are.
  • Una Stubbs was adorable! She is like a lovely grandma who you want to wrap in bubblewrap and protect at all costs and take home for a cup of tea and watch Pointless with. But in all seriousness she was lovely! I said about how she knew Ben when he was little and what he was like. Una said that he was always nagging his mother to go when Wanda and Una would chat in a small meet up in a park. IMAGINE BABYBATCH NAGGING HER! THE MERE THOUGHT IS JUST ADORABLE!!
  • Next up was Gordon Kennedy. Although he may only be a small character in the show he is great! He spoke highly of the inn which he filmed at for Hounds of Baskerville episode and actually recommened it to us.
  • Finally Lisa McAllister joined us, and since we were her last table, she enjoyed a glass of red wine with us. If you do not know, Lisa plays Mycrofts assistance Anthea who we see little of in the show. But Lisa was lovely! we spoke about the convention to come and touched on her character too.

For my second lot of recptions drinks on the Saturday night I was able to chat with Claire Pritchard Jones, Arwel Jones, Sue Vertue, Louis Moffat and Steven Moffat.

  • Claire Pritchard Jones was so lovely! She spoked mainly about Benedict hair and how much of a pain it could be! I asked about Molly’s hair in one scene in The Lying Detective and she told me that wasn’t actually Louise Brealey which utterly shocked me!
  • Arwel Jones was hilarious! Telling us about the little things of the set and how the whole elephant thing wasn’t intentional! It just happened. Apparently he went to multiple small and weird shops and looked for things which he believed would fit in the flat!
  • Sue Vertue was wonderful to talk to as well, answering lots of questions about her husband and Mark’s work together.
  • Louis Moffat briefly came over before inviting his dad, Steven Moffat, over. Steven was great! answering the obvious question of whether the series would be back and truthly saying that he didn’t know. Steven was kind enough to give me some information which I can include in my dissertation about Holme’s treatment of women.

After the drinks we headed into the first party of the evening, The Culverton Smith Ward Party. Initially nervous, our lack of costume did not hold us back. Highlight of the night had to be doing the time warp on a bouncy castle, NOT. EASY. AT ALL!! I should probably quickly mention the extremely garlicy cheesy garlic bread me and Heather ordered with our pizza when we got back to the room that night… Interesting experience… unlikely to purchase again though.

Now as a platinum pass holder, I was entitled to all photos and autographs, only paying extra if I wanted more than one which I thought was fair enough. Nevertheless the day was non stop! From the moment we had finished breakfast to just before the reception drinks that evening we were constantly on the go, only taking a small 30 minute break for food around 1pm. But because we were so nonstop, it does mean that this post will be different to the 2016 post.

Everyone we saw for our autographs were ever so lovely! Although there was a queue behind us at each person, the guest took time to talk to us, asking if we were enjoying our selves and what we had planned for the day ahead. Of course all of those were answered with ‘lots more photographs and autographs sessions.’ Below is a collection of all the autographs I was luck enough to get during my stay at the Hilton. Part of my package also came with a presigned Benedict Cumberbatch autograph which I thought was a nice touch, even if it wasn’t personalised.

The same can’t be quite said about the photographs. While I agree that all the guests are on a very tight schedual and that the staff do everything they can to make sure everyone is done, it did feel all a bit too rushed. A quick hello, have you photo, a thanks and then gone. But I did love all my photo’s that I had done this year! Much better than my 2016 ones.

The ultimate highlight would have to be my question being asked at the Louise Brealey and Sian Brooke talk. I asked whether she believed that her and Sherlock sorted everything out after the events of The Final Problem. She asnwered that it was up to the viewers interpretation, so clearly keeping the Sherlolly ship alive and sailing fine.

Oh! I should mention quickly before I end, the drunken selfie I had with Steven Moffat on the Saturday night party!

While the weekend was nothing but hectic, it was extremely enjoyable with lots of laughs! It was safe to say that we were absolutely knackered by the time we got back home on the Monday! I think I spent a good portion of my night asleep after explaining to my parents how much fun it was and showing them all my photographs.

So that concludes another convention post! I am sorry it’s not as detailed as I would like, but this post has been sat in my drafts since November so I must get this up! Please check out heather blog post of Sherlocked 2017 here and our her Youtube video here.  Feel free to leave comments of your time at Sherlocked if you went and share any photos with me too!

Until next time!

Welcome to London: A Sherlocked Convention Rundown 2017 (sorry it’s late) When you have elliminated all which is impossible then whatevere remains, however improbable must be the truth.

Directed by: Patrick Marber

Cast:

Vanda- Natalie Dormer Thomas- David Oakes

‘And the Lord hath smitten him and delivered him into a woman’s hands’

A critically acclaimed Broadway hit, strikes at the heart of London once more! Over the last few years we have had our fair share of shows make the jump over the pond to share talents beyond our belief. With the smash hit Hamilton due to begin later this year, as well as Dear Evan Hansen recently making the leap, it is nice to see a none musical production make a transfer with such flare and originality. The play I am referring to, of course, is Venus in Fur.

The play came into talks following the final few episodes of ITV’s Victoria and a canceled Shakespeare class on a Thursday morning in October. How I hear you ask? Well this is down to David Oakes and his Prince Ernest. His heart throbbing and what can only be described as tragic character, captured the hearts of my fellow English thespian Catharine, and myself. So when we heard that he was to star in a new show in London, we simply had to take the opportunity up. Along side him would be one of the biggest names of the 21st century, Natalie Dormer. Having recently stared in Game of Thrones, Elementary and Mockingjay Part 1 and 2, Dormer’s talents have allowed us to see her appear in more and more entertainment over the last few years.

Now normally this is the point where I would write a small synopsis about what the play is actually about, however I’m not going to do that this time. Instead I shall give you the blurb from the script that I purchased while at the show.

Blurb

Enigmatic actress Vanda Jordan appears unannounced for an audition with director Thomas Novachek. She’s determined to land the leading role in his new production- despite seeming wrong for the part. Over one evening in downtown Manhattan their charged meeting becomes a seductive dance to the end. Intoxicating, erotic, highly charged, Venus in Fur is a dark comedy about desire, fantasy and love.

A 2 person show is something you rarely see in the West End now a days. With more shows having cast number’s exceeding the 30’s, it is nice to see one with a very limited cast. And to go with such a tiny cast, was a beautiful theatre too. Currently making it’s home in the Theatre Royal Haymarket, Venus in Fur has a perfect intimate auditorium for a very intimate play.

Our seats were allocated at the back of the stalls in row M. Normally I would steer clear of sitting near the back of the stalls, due to previous shows where I have had very poor seats and have hardly been able to see anything, does not help that I’m blind as a bat! But I was not disappointed at all! The set itself was very impressive. For what looked like a small stage, the crew had managed to transform it into a spacious Manhattan apartment. Each detail was well though out and interesting to see. There was not much use of lighting or sound effects, besides that of a thunderstorm, however this did not take away from the overal brilliancy of the show!

Before this show came into talks, I had never heard of Venus in Fur. The term ‘masochism’ had propped up in some analysis of books back in the first and second years of University but I had never truly understood it until now. From the images of rehearsals that had propped up on Twitter and Whatsonstage, I was able to have a guess what it would be about and safe to say I was very nervous.

David Oakes’s character explores complicated feelings and emotions it seems through the course of the play. Struggling with casting as well, it is clear that the stress of this play has begun to get to Thomas. This is no problem for Oakes though. It is clear that his understanding of the character has come from numerous hours of research, reading and rehearsing. He captures the struggle and stress of casting, re-writing and producing a performance with such accuracy, any new writer, caster or produce could totally relate too!

A play within a play can sometimes be hard to grasp, causing confusion within the audience, but he delievers a performance which show clear barriers between this ‘real world’ and the play. Although a man potentially set in his ways, Oakes gives us someone who will be swayed by pleasure and pain. Having only previously seen his inspirinig skills in Victoria, I was not disappointed by his perfomance in this at all! The techinique that David gives us is nothing but impressive. He show’s us his ability to change accents so easily, I was litteraly sat there with my mouth wide open at one point! I certainly cannot slip from a Manhattan accent to a German to a British one with such ease! His use of the space around him has been thought through clearly, as well as prop usage too. Although rehearsing with Vanda, Oakes shows us the man behind the writer behind the actor observing his potential employee. David Oakes is nothing but a first class actor of this generation, inspiring many with his abilities and true talent.

It is no secret that Natalie Dormer is an extremely talented lady in the 21st century. She has proved herself with her roles in Game of Thrones and Elementary, giving us very different characters. We see this come through once again in this show.

Initially, we see Vanda as your typical girl who wants her big break in the city. Eventually, Dormer takes you on a journey, exploring a very different character. It cannot be easy being an actress and having to portray an actress. Although I have never done it myself, Natalie holds nothing back and gives it her absolute all! Each moment in the play provides us with a new exciting twist in her character(s). I will say however, I do feel sorry for her in that very revealing costume in the autumn/winter period! She must be freezing the poor love! Nevertheless, the stockings and knee high boots do not hold her back. From what seems like a very innocent Manhattan girl, to a goddess, we see different light’s to Dormer compared to her other roles. Her emotion and use of stage are just like Davids, STUNNING!

All in all this play was truly something! Exploring a sexy new world I was very debious about, it seduced it’s audience into a world of pleasure. If you are nervous like I was then please do not fear! Oakes and Dormer will take your concerns and worries and chuck them away, giving you something to talk about for a long time! To top this show off, I was lucky enough to meet these two amazing stars at stage door after the show. I would like to thank them both for taking time out of their extremely brief lunch break to sign programmes, take photos and accept birthday cards after a tiring and energetic performance.

The Big Sherlocked Update 2017

It’s been a while I know since I’ve been on here and so much has happened! But I wanna focus on one thing in particular that happened this weekend which was Sherlocked!

A Chat with Sian Brooke: For our reception drinks, we also had a mini M&G with the guests in attendence. On the Friday night, my table had Sian Brooke, Una Stubbs, Lisa McAllister and Gordon Kennedy (I think). While talking to Sian I mentioned the fact that I had seen her in Hamlet along with Benedict back in 2015 and that they were all amazing! To which she replied “That’s really kind of you... I haven’t actually seen it yet!”

Flesh & Blood Talk: For this talk, Louise Brealey and Sian Brooke answer present in questions from the auidence and those who could not make it. It was a random number system that Tony, lovely guy, got the auidence to shout of random numbers. At one point 58 was called out and it turned out to be my question which was to Louise and asking whether or not she thinks, Molly Hooper and Sherlock sorted everything out after the events of Sherinford and whether Sherlocked told her. So after a cheeky wave to Loo and Sian (who are lovely!) I sunk back down in my seat like ‘holy shit this is happening’ Loo’s answer was that she didn’t really know and that it was up to the enterprtation of the audience watching! If anyone has the audo clip from this or the transcript please can you let me know because I was a little starstruck at that point so it sort of stuck for a whole 2 mins before my brain went into “HOLY SHIT LOUISE BREALEY JUST ANSWERED YOUR QUESTION!!” mode....

A Chat with Steven Moffat & Claire Pritchard- Jones: So on the Saturday night of our reception drinks and mini M&G’s Steven Moffat came over to our table at one point. Naturally everyone asked whether there would be Season 5 and if he had any ideas about what could happen. The Answer is that he really does not know! It is up to Benedict and Martin and if they are free. Plus he only have 1.5 ideas out of 5 at the moment so it might be a wait! Claire Pritchard- Jones came over later too and again, lots of people had questions about Ben’s hair etc. One lovely girl from Malta asked about Mollys and we happened to get onto the subject of Louise wearing a wig/ extensions. What I didn’t know is that during the scene in The Lying Detective where Molly turns up at John’s therapist’s house... it’s not actually Louise Brealey filming that scene! She was unavailable for filming! Yeah I’ll leave you to ponder on that one!

Sue & Steven Selfie Time!: This is a funny one. At the Saturday night party (Victorian Gothic Night) Sue Vertue and Steven Moffat came along. Now my lovely friend Heather and I were casually at the bar buying drinks. I didn’t realise that stood in the queue in front of me at the bar was Sue. Meanwhile, Heather was trying to tell me that she was stood next to Steven, all while trying not to freak out. Anyway later that night we’re having a chat and a lil dance and we joking say we should try and get a selfie with them. So I go up to Sue and ask if we could have one as it’s Heather’s 21st on Thursday and she said yeah of course!!! The product of this question resutling in this:

Upon showing them both on Sunday during my autograph session, they both laughed and said how drunk Steven looked! Steven then asked if they were circulating on the internet yet. I said not just yet... only on fb and mainly to my mum!

The Ultimate Tea Making Experience Fail: Unrelated to Sherlocked, Heather failed at making a cup of tea the normal way... twice. 1st time she spent 20 minutes in between boiling the kettle and actually making the tea... because she forgot she was making one. 2nd time, she put the teabag in her suitcase not her cup...

So this has been just a short update on some of the things that happened at Sherlocked. Complete one with pictures and prettiness will come on my blog at some point... Once I get round to writing it!
