If Amazon wanted to take a “modern” approach to Tolkien and the Silmarillion, they should’ve done something like this:

(I would’ve gladly paid to see this.)

It was so fun and wonderful to work with my author @secretlythranduil who wrote this beautiful story! I am humbled that my art inspired this and grateful for the collaboration! <3

The melancholy story about Glorfindel and Erestor will be revealed this weekend on AO3. Stay tuned. *wink*

Melkor, the Great Enemy, has discovered a perfect way to spread evil! Through the food cart, let the stupid human trade sinful money to voluntarily buy short-term pleasure and long-term pain (obesity).

And the lieutenant (Aka shop clerk) Sauron, under his guidance, hides the evil sugar and calories in the appetizing aroma...

Anyway... M♡S Bubble Tea Cafe is grand opening! ! !

(Open for five minutes, close for two hours, OVER)

CALLING ALL TOLKIEN FAN ARTISTS!

There are just 10 days left to sign up for 2022’s Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang - the form will be open until 23.59 CET on 8 May.  We’ve got some great submissions already but it would be wonderful if more of you could join us - the more artwork, the better!

I’d like to take part but I’ll never get anything finished in 10 days…

It doesn’t have to be finished - art drafts are due at 23.59 CET on 15 May, and the draft just needs to give a good idea of what the final piece will look like.  Line art which will have colour added later is fine, or you could submit a concept drawing of something that you will work on through the summer - a costume or an embroidery piece, for example.  If in doubt, contact the mods; we will be as accommodating as we can.

Unless you decide that you want to be completely hands off in your partnership with your author, you have until 7th August to finish your art.

I’m not sure my art is eligible.

It probably is!  We only turn down art for the following reasons:

1) It is so incomplete that you can’t get any idea what the finished piece will be like (e.g. it’s at the lines and blobs stage - a nice sketch, for example, would be fine, or a manip that’s still a little rough at the edges).

2) It doesn’t demonstrate sufficient original input (e.g. it’s a screenshot from a film or game with no transformative elements applied).

3) The piece(s) submitted have previously been published elsewhere (e.g. they’re already on DeviantArt).

We accept all kinds of artworks.  In the past we’ve had sculpture, crafts, drawings, paintings, comic strips, moodboards, edits, digital manipulations, calligraphy, collage, cosplay and print block cutting.  It would be great to broaden that out even further.  (Pyrography? Video?  Bookbinding? Board game design?!?)

I’ve never done anything like this before! / I’m usually a writer and I’ve never published my art!  I’m nervous!

You’re not on your own - every year we have a lot of first timers as well as plenty of experienced participants.  The mods will happily answer any questions you have; our FAQ section gives a fairly comprehensive run-down of the event, but if something isn’t clear, please just ask!

What if nobody wants to claim my art?

We cannot absolutely promise that every artwork will find a loving home with one of our authors, but rest assured that demand on claims night is always extremely high - and it isn’t always the obvious characters and pairings that get snapped up first…

(We also have an excellent team of pinch hitters and treat makers, and will do our very best to find someone to write for your creative efforts.)

I’ve only seen the films / I’ve only read The Lord of the Rings / I’m new to the fandom, but everybody is talking about obscure academic papers and people whose names start with Fin.  Help!!!

We have artists and writers of all experience levels taking part in this event, from complete beginners through to professionals.  Length of time in fandom and knowledge of different canons also varies, and we will be glad to have you whether you are a full-time Tolkien scholar or you fell in love with the films last weekend.

There is no gate-keeping in this event and no expectation that you are familiar with every Tolkien text or every piece of media.  All we ask is that you are clear in your submission which canon(s) your art is based on.  Art and fic based solely on the films or on a video game canon is very welcome in the event - in fact, we always like to see a mixture!

Do I have to help the author with the story?  I don’t think I can do that!

That’s OK!  We have a range of collaboration levels that you select from when you submit your art, including low-commitment options (though we do ask that you are responsive to your author and reply to any questions within 48 hours, unless you have told them in advance that you’re going to be unavailable for a period of time). See the FAQs for more detail.

How many pieces can I submit?

Up to two pieces, for claiming by two separate authors.

OK, I’m in.  What next?

The artist signup form is over here - once we have your signup, we will send you a confirmation email welcoming you to the event (this can take up to 48 hours depending on mod availability).  We can’t wait to see your beautiful creations!

One week left to sign up as an artist!

We would love you to come and join our summer adventure!  If you don’t have time this year or you’ve already signed up, then please help us spread the word to your fellow fan artists.

(Don’t forget, art drafts aren’t due until the 15th, and they can be VERY draft at this stage, so don’t panic if you think you won’t be finished by then!)

SIGNAL BOOST!!!!!

Signups for the 2022 Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang are now open!

For those who don’t know already, this is a Tolkien-fandom-wide event celebrating the talent of our fanwork creators. Participating artists create a piece of art to be claimed by one of our signed up authors. Authors will then write a 5k word fic based on the art they chose.

  • All sign up forms are available here!
  • As well as signing up as an author and/or artist, you can sign up as a beta, cheerleader, pinch hitter, or treat maker.
  • Explanations of what all of these mean can be found in the relevant section of our FAQ.  Signups for these roles will not close and will get you access to the gallery; however, you must be signed up as an author to claim.
  • Want to suggest a prompt to our artists? Our suggestions form will be open until May 15th.
  • Want to see what others have already suggested and get hyped with us? Check out our handy spreadsheet.
  • Questions? Come and visit our website, which has our FAQs and timeline all set out.
  • Please be sure to familiarise yourself with the rules before signing up :)

We are open to all characters, genres and ratings, and all canons that fall under the Tolkien fandom umbrella. This includes movieverse (i.e. the LOTR and Hobbit trilogies), lesser known works by Tolkien (such as The Father Christmas Letters), and/or other works with a clear link to his life or creative output (for example, Tolkien’s translations and academic texts, the 2019 Tolkien biopic, fan-made films like Born of Hope, and game canons such as The Lord of the Rings Online). Crossovers between two or more Tolkien canons are permitted.

We hope you’re as excited as we are! We can’t wait to see what you make. PS - for many of the mod team, April 15th and 18th are public holidays.  As such, confirmation emails may be going out more slowly than usual.  If you haven’t received confirmation of your sign up within 72 hours, feel free to send us an Ask or a follow-up email.

TRSB2022: Welcome + Schedule

Hello hello, TRSB-ers!

We hope 2022 is treating you kindly so far.  Here at TRSB Mod HQ we have started work on this year’s event, and there are a couple of things we would like to share.

First of all, please welcome the lovely @gratuacuun to our mod team!  That’s right, there are six of us now.  Your other event mods are @joyfullynervouscreator (AKA Raiyana), @lathalea, @naryaflame, @ettelene and @hauntedsiriel-blog (AKA Findekàniel).

Secondly, please find below our dates for 2022:

  • 1st April - suggestions spreadsheet opens
  • 15th April - sign ups open
  • 8th May - artist sign ups close
  • 15th May - art drafts due
  • 20th May - gallery open
  • 22nd May - author sign ups close
  • 29th May - claims
  • (***TBA - additional claims***)
  • 5th June - post claims check in
  • 12th June - final art due from artists who chose the “free rein” collaboration option
  • 26th June - check in #2
  • 31st July - check in #3
  • 7th August - final art due from all other artists
  • 14th August - final check in / deadline to abandon your fic to a pinch hitter
  • 4th September - fics due in collection
  • 9th September - reveals
  • 12th September - staggered Tumblr reblogs begin

Please note that these dates are not all on the same day of the week!  For example, fics are due on a Sunday, so people have the full weekend to write, but then revealed on a Friday, giving the whole weekend to read.

Hope that’s got you excited…keep an eye on the blog for more announcements over the coming weeks, and don’t forget that as per our previous posts, in the current year we will only be accepting two submissions per artist, in order to keep numbers manageable.

xoxo, the TRSB Mod Team

Heads Up: Suggestion Spreadsheet Coming Soon!

In need of something to stave off the Monday blues?  Well, here is your friendly reminder that our 2022 suggestions spreadsheet will open on 1st April!

This spreadsheet is the place for you to suggest locations, time periods, characters, relationships, story elements and concepts that you would like to see in the submitted art.  None of the ideas are guaranteed to appear in the event, but we know for a fact that it inspires multiple artists each year, so who knows?  You might get lucky!  Here is last year’s spreadsheet if you would like some ideas.

We’re currently finalising tweaks to the FAQs so we’ll share those with you over the coming days.  In the meantime, get your thinking caps on; we can’t wait to see what you come up with this year!
