Contributing their stunning works to the Book of Shields are Kay, Lin, Maystorm, and Melodica Leo! They have these notable lines to say regarding the Fraldarius family:

@kayisdreaming : "Sword (or sword on long stick...I guess)" @priintaniere : "how tragic their entire lineage is and their kickass fashion style :)" @mayst0rm : "FELIX COOL ADFAGHFASGHS" Melodica Leo : "I love how these characters have depth and never quite match the expectations others set for them."

2. Is it easier to draw someone facing left or right (or forward even)

Definitely facing left (I'm right handed), that's why I abuse the flipping canvas horizontally button so much haha

9. What are your file name conventions

"YYYYMMDD [insert character/ship/topic]" + status (rough, wip or final)

not the smartest strategy but it works for me

I use Bridge so it shows the previews directly

28. Any art events you have participated in the past (like zines)

now is my time to brag :'D I've been participating to fandom zines since 2017 (OCs, Haikyuu!!, Free!, Blue Exorcist, D.Gray-man, FE14, FE16, Witch Hat Atelier, Ace Attorney), they've always been the occasion for me to do big more complete pieces and it's just fun to be part of collaborative projects with super cool people

and I recently made a Sylvix zine with @/wildkitte, where I illustrated Kitte's fic c: it's my pride and joy, please check it out; not to be biased but it's pretty neat

as for other fandom related events: I've done Big Bangs, a few Secret Santas and did art for ship weeks

3. What ideas come from when you were little

I used to only draw animals when I was little then I took a huge break in drawing at all and when I picked that up, it was to draw anime girls with animal ears/features hjdjhdhjd

5. Estimate of how much of your art you post online vs. the art you keep for yourself

6. Anything that might inspire you subconsciously (i.e. this horse wasn't supposed to look like the Last Unicorn but I see it)

a few fics and authors have definitely inspired me in the way i portray and picture sylvix if we're talking about well, what I've been almost exclusively drawing for the past 3 years.

Otherwise, I'd say the music I listen to :'D the musics and songs I'm the most drawn to are melancholic and/or comforting to me (especially thinking of these artists: Norah Jones, Cigarettes After Sex, Portishead, Lana Del Rey, Tamino, Ella Fitzgerald and Barbara Lewis) and I assume it heavily reflects in what I draw haha

4. Fav character/subject that's a bitch to draw

gonna be honest, the only (2) characters I've been drawing for the past 3 years have been felix and sylvain fire emblem, who did i used to draw before sylvix fire emblem, who knows, certainly not me so I'm gonna say hands. love to draw them. would love to know how to draw them. esp hand holding. (oh and serious answer for the character: artemy burakh is a bitch to draw)

8. What's an old project idea that you've lost interest in

oh boyyyyyy the list is endless :'D but one project I'm particularly sad I never got to pursue was a kuroyaku aus zine I wanted to make with a friend! We had a very neat concept imo but lack of time made us put a stop on the project. I found some sketches I made for it tho

(top left: lesbeans kryk, top right: vampire hunters au, bottom left: witch/nekomata au, bottom right: flower shop/tattoo parlor au)

16. Something you are good at but don't really have fun doing

i. i can't honestly think of anything hsdhgsdghsd if I'm good at something, I will have fun doing it

14. Any favorite motifs

i actually don't have any recurring motif/pattern in my art? :'D the closest thing to a motif i have would be this sparkly diamond shape!

20. Something everyone else finds hard to draw but you enjoy

NOSES :^) they're friend shaped

29. Media you love, but doesn't inspire you artistically

on the top of my head Kaoru Mori's Bride Stories, it's an incredible manga with absolutely breathtaking art that I could spend hours looking at but I don't especially aspire to draw like this? One thing I'd love to steal from Mori tho is her love and passion (and incredible patience) for drawing so many rich details and patterns <3

5. Estimate of how much of your art you post online vs. the art you keep for yourself

If you don't count work I'm not allowed to post because of NDA, I probably post 60% of what I draw? I have a lot of unfinished pieces or pieces that I don't find good or interesting enough for everyone to see :'D

Listen, if you are on Twitter and you haven't recently downloaded your data, you really need to. Like, now.

With the recent layoffs, I am willing to bet money that Twitter is going to implode very soon. Maybe not permanently, but dramatically, and very, very soon. Like "Liz Truss vs a head of lettuce" soon.

I base this quite simply on knowing the kind of shit my wife deals with every day, and listening to people on the news who have talked to Twitter employees about the site at all. Not only do I think there's some Thing that will cause Twitter to puke all over itself like a 19yo who just discovered wine coolers, but I think there are multiple Things, and they are not in the future. They are occurring right now.

They fired the people who know which software licenses are up for renewal next. They fired the people who know that this cache needs to be manually emptied, and yeah they should have written a script for it but there were so many other projects that it was easier for Bob to just manually do it on Friday mornings while on his 2nd cup of coffee. They fired the people who know to not poke this thing in that way bc this thing works in a non-standard fashion, but it works, so even though the software manual says "poke it," don't do that. They fired the people that know that this queue getting up over X number of tickets means it starts eating tickets and erasing half the data you need to fix issues, so you have to compress the ticket numbers at least every 2 days with an ad hoc utility script that Jane wrote after your team discovered this issue. Not all of the institutional knowledge is gone, but a lot of it is, and once that knowledge is gone, it's not coming back. Once that knowledge is gone, things unravel quickly at an institution that size.

Whatever happens on the social end of things - and that's a fucking mess - make your contingency plans for not losing touch with people now, and get downloads of your shit. Now. Not later. This will not fizzle out like LiveJournal. I'm willing to bet that it will simply cease to be one day soon. It might come back once it disappears.

I'm just not counting on it, and neither should you.

Fun thing: downloading an archive of your data from Twitter requires... Twitter to be working, and they say it’s going to take at least 24 hours for the zip file to become available (and I have NO doubt that this specification was made back when they had the full staffing load, rather than Jason the Intern, Eric the Crawler and Timmy the (actual) Dog who are probably all that remains of the previous staff... because all the good people who didn’t get sacked have almost certainly expedited their resignations).

Get your data early, folks.  It will almost certainly take longer than advertised.

i said this before to my friends but i guess it's worth posting here: i truly did not expect the scope of how bad the twitter acquisition would go. i genuinely thought musk was going to talk big and whine before the deal, then slowly over time wreck the site with a series of poor decisions.

the pace and magnitude of the fuckups he managed to pull in such a short period of time is unprecedented. it's SO fucking bad. since i at least have some technical understanding behind running a social network, i feel like i'm staring into the sun every time a new headline comes out. there is no hyperbole when it comes to describing how badly elon musk is fumbling the bag.

if you're absorbing this news and think that maybe it's not as bad as it sounds, i assure you it is probably WORSE than what we're hearing. this isn't just haters amplifying small mistakes, musk is weaving the goddamn rope.

it's a goddamn tragedy that billionaires never really suffer for their choices, but i think this is as close as we're gonna get before we start beheading them in the streets

The really funny thing? For as bad as it gotten, as quickly as it has... None of the current problems are what's going to kill Twitter.

Like yes, users are leaving because they have no trust in the site. Executives are resigning. Advertisers are pulling their ads. Companies are getting impersonated and are going to sue them. The FTC is going to fine them a bazillion dollars.

But all those things take time. They're all bad, bad things, but they won't kill Twitter overnight. They're a slow bleed, an eventual demise when a court case resolves, that kind of thing.

But one of the first things Musk did was fire much of the SRE teams, the on-call staff. These are the people who work to keep the site up and running, and they're the kind of people you pay to do nothing most of the time because what you're really paying them for is to be there at 3am when some server goes down and you need someone to log in and quickly fix it.

They're the server administration equivalent of firefighters. Musk fired THOUSANDS of them. And just like getting rid of all the firefighters, this might seem to be going fine for a little while... Because there's not a fire yet. But once there is, oh boy. Things are going to get Real Exciting fast.

Twitter is one bad day away from just ceasing to LOAD at all. Someone hacks a server, someone famous dies and a system gets a little too overloaded due to the traffic spike, or hey, maybe a server just fills up with junk files because the person who had been manually cleaning them up lost their job a week ago... And Twitter dot Com is just gonna be a big message saying "sorry we couldn't load that information, try Twitter/help or try again later".

For hours. Or days. Because the other thing about firing all your SREs... They're also the people who know the weak points of the system, and know where things go wrong when they do go wrong. You can't just replace them with any warm bodies, elm sku just had a ton of institutional knowledge walk out the front door and it's not coming back.

Yes, Twitter is the titanic, but we haven't even hit the iceberg yet. The CEO has demanded full speed on a dark night and no one has the binoculars. It's only a matter of time.

Artists Beware! Please read if you have a DeviantArt account:

DeviantArt have just announced that they're launching their own ai art generator, and every deviation that has ever been posted has been automatically opted in - I've checked this for myself and every one of my own artworks now needs to be manually changed in the settings of every single deviation otherwise they'll be used.

To have your artist username exempted from prompts you have to fill in a Google form to be approved by a human, and you must prove that you operate under your respective alias to ask them not to use it - read more here

Suffice to say I'm livid, I've been on DeviantArt for a decade and I'm going to shut down my account once I've manually opted out my hundreds of deviations. On their promotion page for the new tool they'll emphasize that it's *totally within the control of the artists* showing an image of the checked box that opts you out, while not mentioning that all of your previous deviations are already opted in by default.

I would recommend that anyone who has similar plans as me and wants to leave the site should manually opt-out for every deviation before shutting down your account, just to be on the safe side because I'm not sure if just deactivating your account would count as opting out.

I'll try to keep this post updated with accurate and up-to-date information since AI related stuff can quickly cause a frenzy online - don't hesitate to DM me with any new information and I'll update it here!

After an update on their Twitter and some additions by other users I'm adding that apparently they will not directly use deviations for their own AI generator per se, but you still need to fill in the manual form to stop your username (and by extension art) from being used in their AI generator as a prompt, and you still need to manually opt-out all of your deviations so third-party generators don't have permission to use them. (At least that is my understanding currently of the situation)

I wanted to make that new distinction since it means my post wasn't entirely accurate, in that your deviations are not directly going into *their* generator by default. However it's still incredibly vague as to where they're getting the data to make these generated images, and the presence of the manual opt-out form would imply that it's very much possible for your art to end up in their AI process if you don't apply to have your name blocked as a prompt.

Slightly less bad, but still pretty awful and it's not very reassuring with how unclear this announcement has been

Another update, they've now added a way to toggle AI permissions on and off for your entire account:

**Probably the final update for now read below for the most current situation**

Due to community outrage it does seem they've fully backpedaled on the automatic opt-in for all deviations - you now no longer need to manually fix your deviations.

However that being said, I was mentioning before that I was wondering where exactly they got the data for this generator then if not directly from deviations, and the answer isn't looking great:

While DeviantArt has now clarified that they're not currently directly using deviations for their new AI, it utilizes data that isn't exactly ethically sourced:

Not only does it utilize LAION which has controversies about unethically sourced data, but it *also* utilises Stable Diffusion which has just as many issues in that regard:

In my opinion this, even when the updated options to opt-out are taken into account, doesn't really align with their mission statement of being ethical towards artists in the way that they say it does. It's my understanding that while DeviantArt haven't personally trawled any art from their own website to train this AI, there's no guarantee that the third-party data they're using hasn't on either their website or other social media artists use. Some people have pointed out that even if you check the box to opt-out at this point, if your data was part of any third-party AI training it can't exactly be unlearned at this point. I'd still very much recommend filling in the manual form to have your artist name blocked from prompts, but that form has some issues too imo.

Also as a final note I wanted to clarify something because I received some particularly nasty and angry responses in the minority about this: Nowhere in this post have I made any personal takes about whether AI or AI image generation is good or bad - that's a very complicated question that one person can't answer, especially when it comes to the online art community, there needs to be a broader consensus about these things. That's exactly why DeviantArt should've been more transparent and asked for more feedback from the userbase before even thinking of launching this, but they didn't.

Regardless of anyone's stance on the concept of AI image generation as a way of making art, I'd like to think we can all agree at the very least artists should have fully informed consent and control over how their art is used online - that is what I'm concerned about here.
