We continue our series by featuring Laxmi Narayan Tripathi. In 2014, Laxmi, as she prefers, helped secure unprecedented government recognition of a third gender in India. This initiative has now been joined by neighbors, Nepal and Bangladesh, who now recognize third genders since 2009 and 2013 respectively. . Laxmi continues her fight to normalize the lives of #LGBTIQ people everywhere, aiding groundbreaking policy reforms in India and representing Hijras in the global media. . In the United States, this past week was Coming Out day. Throughout the week, we will recognize advocates who are fighting for LGBTIQ human rights everywhere. Meet Yuli Rustinawati of Arus Pelangi. OutRight's 2016 Felipe de Souza LGBTIQ human rights award. In the past year, Indonesia has been plagued with stories of anti-LGBTIQ violence perpetrated by both authorities and radicalized vigilantes. Suddenly, years of dormant intolerance has bubbled to the surface, erupting into a full blown moral panic. Amidst this human rights nightmare, activist Yuli Rustinawati has continued to stand up against anti-LGBTIQ discrimination. . Today, Arus Pelangi contends with both policy reform and an unprecedented resurgence of anti-LGBTIQ mentality. The recent spike in hate crimes can be traced back to parallel discriminatory policies and statements released by officials. . We continue our series of profiles today by highlighting Alice Nkom, a Cameroonian lawyer. "Cameroon is one of 38 African countries criminalising homosexuality" says Nkom. In 2003, Nkom founded the Association for the Defense of Homosexuality (ADEFHO) and fights for the rights of #LGBTIQ Cameroonians. Both Nkom and her clients face the constant threat of arrest, assault, and shunning by conservative community members. But Nkom refuses to sit idle while others suffer. She comments of her work, "Somebody has to do this work. I am black, I am a woman and I am a lawyer, and I speak loud. I am a result of the battle of former generations that engaged to free me today, and it's a very heavy debt I owe to new generations." . Ms. Nkom is a reminder that the global LGBTIQ movement has allies... and we are not alone. . Today for #flashbackfriday we're remembering the late and great Edith Windsor, who leaves behind an astounding legacy. The highlight of Windsor’s advocacy was arguably her 2013 victory over #DOMA, which set the U.S. on course to finally legitimize same-sex marriages. Today her late spouse’s name lives on at the Thea Spyer Center for LGBTQ Mental Health. Windsor's persistence in seeking change is a spark of motivation for the global movement working towards human rights for #LGBTIQ people everywhere. . . . cc #humanrights #lgbt #loveislove
