some things i've learned about skin care 🧖🏼‍♀️✨

1. incorporating a retinol; whether it be tretinoin, RetinA, Adapalene, or anything; is a powerful step to alleviate acne, hyperpigmentation and signs of aging. it is one of the most scientifically backed up ingredients shown to normalize melanin production, boost collagen and thicken your skin! 🧏🏽‍♀️

2. patience is key, especially while incorporating a new active into your routine. if your skin purges, let it. give it around 4-6 weeks for beautiful skin to reappear! 💁🏻‍♀️

3. use sun protection, always! invest in a nice sun hat and non-comedogenic sunscreen, and encourage your friends and family to do the same. you can avoid buying a plethora of products by just protecting yourself from harmful UV rays 🌞👒

4. ceramides and skin repairing ingredients are your best friends, especially if you're using a strong retinoid or chemical exfoliant. invest in a non-irritating, emollient moisturizer rich in ceramides to slather on at night! remember, good skin care does not have to be expensive. CeraVe and Eucerin are a great place to start! 🧴

5. experiencing red, irritated and flaky skin? start washing your face with cold water! it can feel uncomfortable at first but the result may motivate you to continue 🧖🏼‍♀️

6. start applying your skincare 2 hours before bed! it's a waste of product + cash to go to bed with a face full of product because it will be wiped off 💆🏽‍♀️🛌

7. all skin is different. some people may rave about the benefits of niacinamide, others may breakout or experience irritation. similarly, some people's skin may enjoy products containing fragrance or essential oils, while others' may not. don't judge people for what works for them 👩‍❤️‍👩

✨✨ Splurge-worthy Korean Skincare Products ✨✨

Or, it’s my birthday and I deserve to treat myself

Hello everyone I’m back from a long hiatus because I finally have time and energy to post. It’s also my birthday today (29/11).

People are always talking about treating yourself to a new coat or a manicure whenever you feel like it. So, here are my picks for the best Korean skincare products if you want to treat yourself.

Belif: The True Cream Aqua Bomb

Pictured: So I don’t really own one of these because it’s sort of out of my budget. I wish I did though.

Alright a high price tag may not always be justified (see: La Mer), but this moisturiser from Belif has an anti-oxidant formula. That means it perfect for calming your skin and keeping it soft and radiant. It’s also suitable for most skin types.
They say that it could be used as an overnight sleeping mask and a makeup primer. I love multipurpose products that are worth the money.

Beauty of Joseon: Dynasty Cream

Pictured: This is very pretty packaging. (From Soko Glam).

Can I just say how cool the name is? And the glass packaging. This is why presentation is so important for branding.
It contains ingredients from traditional Korean medicine such as ginseng, which helps brighten skin. I would recommend this for people with dry skin but not for those with sensitive skin.

Make P:rem: Safe Me Relief Moisture Green Ampoule

People shouldn’t spend a lot of money on cleansers or makeup remover, but the one thing it’s alright to splurge on is serums or ampoules. Things that warrant the price.
Make P:rem’s Safe Me line is well-marketed, but it works. The above ampoule works for oily, sensitive or acne-prone skin types and contains 18 ingredients. It soothes and moisturizes at the same time.

Innisfree: Super Volcanic Pore Clay Mask

I think I’ll be recommending masks in this post, because they are just so nice-feeling and gives your skin that extra push it needs to be dewy and even. It’s the perfect thing to treat yourself with.
I’m a huge fan of clay masks in general as my skin gets super oily at times. This one from cult favourite Innisfree detoxifies skin and helps with calming acne. It also comes in a foamy mousse form. I’ve recommended it a few times here on this blog as it is very good for your skin.

Dr. Jart+ Lover Rubber Masks

These are super fun rubber masks (each color has a different property) that are good for every skin type. Normally I’m not a fan of sheet masks, but I’ll make an exception for this.
I would recommend the Hydration Lover, which is perfect for a self-care day. One mask is pricier than your average Korean sheet mask, but it is really effective.

Bonus: Brands that are worth your hard-earned money

  • Cosrx (fantastic for acne-prone skin)
  • Skinfood (try the Egg White Pore Mask)
  • Sulwhasoo (a brand on the higher end of the spectrum with products made from the best ingredients)

I might add some more to this list later. Stay tuned for my next post! 💕💕

Fun Fact Friday - What is Squalane?🧐

I don’t know if it’s because of the warmer weather or not, but my skin is getting pretty dry at the moment, which is surprising news for someone who usually has slightly oily skin. It’s time to look at some hydrating ingredients, and squalane is one that gets recommended time and time again for its nourishing properties. Let’s take a look at what it has to offer!

  • Squalane is derived from squalene - a molecule that’s naturally found in our skin.
  • But squalene is too unstable to be used in skincare/haircare products as it spoils quickly, so it has to be combined with hydrogen instead.
  • This gives us squalane!
  • It mimics sebum produced by our skin, which helps to moisturise the skin, protect the skin’s barrier and keep everything smooth and supple.
  • As a result, it acts as an emollient - it plumps up the skin by retaining moisture found between skin cells.
  • So it’s great for dry, combination and sensitive skin, as it hydrates without causing irritation.
  • Those with acne or oily skin, however, should steer clear as it can actually make things worse.

Anonymous asked:

Hi Michelle, would you be so kind to let us know which skin care ingredients should not be used together? For instance, I've read that niacinamide shouldn't be used with Vitamin C for whatever reason.. would greatly appreciate it, thank you so much for always being so gracious, thorough and informative ❤️

Hello, good questions!

Vitamin C and Niacinamide are fine to use together, it can create a reaction which is usually a bad thing but in this instance it’s fine. If you are experiencing a reaction then let one product dry before applying the other. For a more scientific explanation see here.

Ingredients not to mix

Vitamin C shouldn’t be mixed with most AHA’s/BHA’s/acids (lactic, glycolic, etc). AHA’s destabilize Vitamin C because they change the PH level and Vitamin C is a very vulnerable ingredient and requires specific PH levels to work efficiently. If you are a Vitamin C lover i’d recommend searching for the freshest doses available, things that come in one use pipets or ampoules. Vitamin C usually loses it’s efficiency when exposed to light or oxygen. Look for Vitamin C products like Clinique Fresh Pressed Vitamin C Daily Booster, this product is exposed to very little light and oxygen even when using. Try to avoid products with Vitamin C that require lots of opening like a cream and stick to serums that pump out product.

Avoid mixing Retinol with Benzoyl Peroxide/any acne treatments because they counteract each other’s benefits. Both products are also irritants and can cause peeling on their own, so using them together can cause major irritation especially on sensitive skin. Benzoyl Peroxide does work really well however with Salicylic and Glycolic Acid, so anyone with acne should steer towards these ingredients.

Ingredients to mix

As listed above, Benzoyl Peroxide goes well with Glycolic and Salicylic Acid. Great to know for anyone out there with acne prone skin, make sure your skin care routine has these ingredients. This can be a bit drying so it’s best for oily, acne prone skin. Think 16 year old skin.

Retinol and Ferulic Acid. Ferulic acid is an antioxidant that helps with sun damage (good because Retinol makes your skin more prone to sum damage).

Retinol and Vitamin C. These two are both amazing for anti aging. Vitamin C is a tricky product to get right so you want to find vitamin c products that really keep it fresh and being able to use the product up asap. The longer vitamin C sits out the less effective it becomes. Always buy it in dark/non glass bottles and keep it out of light! Vitamin A, C and E all work great together. Vitamin A = Retinol.

Vitamin C and Vitamin E. As explained above, Vitamin A, C and E are all besties. These are all antioxidants and protect your skin from the elements, keeping it looking youthful.

Retinol and AHA’s/BHA’s. This is usually viewed asa no go, and if you have sensitive skin then this might be too a little too intense. Retinol is not an exfoliant like AHA’s/BHA’s and Retinol could use the help of exfoliation to work even better. However this can be a little intense on the skin. You shouldn’t be using retinol every night anyway but listen to your skin if you’re experiencing irritation. See more explanation on Retinol here.

Retinol and Hyaluronic Acid. Retinol is known to be drying so follow up with a good moisturizing products especially ones that keep water/hydrating into the skin like Hyaluronic Acid. They work together to keep skin young and plump!

hello ieva! i was wondering your thoughts on mario badescu products? specifically their enzyme cleansing gel, the seaweed cleansing lotion and their oil free moisturizer. i tend to have oily skin and i've been trying a sample of those three products and i seem to be doing ok but i don't wanna do harm to my face

Avatar

wowee, do i ever have opinions on mario badescu! thanks for giving me the perfect chance to voice them!

🚫 why mario badescu should be renamed mario BAD 🚫

this was an inevitable topic that i knew would come up. full disclosure: MB is probably at the head of the list of brands i do not trust, would not purchase from, and am so tired of seeing in aesthetic insta shelfies and twitter skincare threads. and it isn’t even because of the overpriced, cheap-packaging food-colourant scented water that passes for a face mist, nor the dramatic claims about their “anti-cystic-acne” buffering lotion that actually has very little chances of affecting something as deep in the skin as a cyst.

oh no, my bone to pick with mario badescu is much bigger. i wish it were just ineffectiveness marketed through attractive VSCO girl-esque aesthetics.

many, many users of MB skincare have ended up reporting “dry, itchy, red, irritated, broken out skin”, so much so that the brand is infamous for this in the skincare aficionado circles. in 2013, they were hit with a class-action lawsuit for “failing to disclose the inclusion of strong steroids in at least two of their products.” to quote from this news article:

The steroids, hydrocrotisone and triamcinolone acetonide, can trigger enlarged capillaries and dermatological misery, including skin atrophy. This is where the skin becomes so thin that it easily perforates, leading to infection, diseases, fungal growths, rashes and blistered skin that oozes, burns and peels. Of course, this looks as awful as it sounds. Worse, skin atrophy can cause problems with other medical issues; even removing a bandage can rip open the afflicted skin.
The refusal of Mario Badescu to disclose the steroids in its products meant that, when they silently changed the formulation to remove them, customers were slammed with the consequences of topical steroid withdrawal. The entire deceptive operation was discovered when one longtime Mario Badescu fan—who now describes the brand as “a horrible, unethical company”—started suffering severe side effects. When she posted on Amazon about this, others chimed in with the same issues. After comparing notes, the group mobilized to collect data and challenge the brand.

have they improved since then? not really. from ingredient lists that disregard regulations and on occasion are entirely misleading about product contents, to very low-quality and non-user friendly packaging combined with cheap formulations with an enormous profit margin for MB, consistent complaints about irritation, problems have persisted to the present day, and if they lied about something as enormous as including steroids in their products — this is very, very serious — i do not trust them not to lie again.

in short: the formulations are extremely cheap to produce, so are the packagings, the company’s ethics are terrible, everything is overpriced, effectiveness is dubious unless stuff’s been laced with undisclosed steroids. mario badescu? it’s gonna be a big yikes from me, no thank you.
