CARRIE FISHER Larry King Live (September 12, 1990)
the author's barely disguised longing for a kinder world
hey don’t cry. trees grow out of the ground.
the night sky has sparkles on it
the creatures live in the grass.
i just have to know what happened to the ui/ux designers at firaxis between civ6 and civ7
what the fuck
what the fuck
the whole severance process and its subsequent success being manufactured from and built upon the labour and suffering of two women. one a child who designed severance to cope with the reality of the world she was forced into, and one being a woman of colour who was kidnapped and turned into a toy to be used at the whims of a white man. and you all wanted to know why ms huang is a child. well here is your answer. a teenage girl of colour currently under the same scholarship as cobel happily and matter-of-factly carrying out the subjugation of people who only exist because of what lumon exploited out of people like her. lumon having entire institutions dedicated to the continued indoctrination of vulnerable children. lumon systematically ensuring any amount of class or race consciousness or solidarity between their subjects is impossible by having them carry out each other's exploitation on their behalf. the innies just being a new rung at the bottom of the ladder whom the disenfranchised and marginalised can feel empowerment in stepping over. and ms huang is just the next in a long, long line of victims
re: "you all wanted to know why ms huang is a child. well here is your answer". the 'reveal' feels particularly powerful to me in the context of a sci-fi story, where you are usually expected to solve mysteries by revisiting the plot and analysing world-building.
ms huang has so far been treated either as comic relief (there's a popular "ms huang" rpg profile on twitter rn who essentially posts jokes) or as an interesting source of speculation (how many times in a sci-fi story do we get an older character trapped in a younger body? or a wise robot who looks and sounds like a child?). both of those reactions were understood and encouraged by the show. she was a fun mystery. and now, it turns out not only is her character deeply tragic, but also there's no plot twist. she is a child because she is a child and children get exploited all the time.
it's sci-fi at its best: drawing parallel between our world and a fictional one where it most matters. yes, in real life there's no such thing as severance. but there's just about everything else.

Little summary so far of the elections, for my non german followers:
Germany is unfortunately one big step closer to become a right wing country.
The conservative party cdu won the election. But the problem is that they developed negatively just like the conservative party, the republicans, in the US. They are more extreme in their views; lots of it is has right wing characteristics. They were even willing to cooperate with the right wing party afd, on an anti-immigration bill, which led to a public backlash. So as for better chances to win in today’s election the cdu had to row back on their bill. The majority of voters were gen x and boomers.
Spd and grüne, which were part of the coalition we had until now, lost a lot of points and are now in the middle field/ third place of votings. Their coalition era was a difficult one. Also lots of decisions were blocked/boycotted by the other coalition party: fdp. Which are luckily now out of the bundestag because they weren‘t even able to get the 5% vote njehehehe (additionally: christian lindner, fdp leader, that was responsible for this mess is now „out of a job“ as he resigns. One of the very few good outcomes today.). Spd and grüne apparently had the most votes from millenials and gen z.
Die linke (leftist party) garnered a lot more votes than usual with almost 9%. This uptake is due to former spd and grüne voters now voting for them. Lots of first time voters (gen z) voted for die linke. But also gen z in general and millenials.
And now to the very bad news: the afd , the full on right wing party, is the second most voted party with around 20%, which is of course very bad news for germany‘s history. Most votes came from boomers, gen x and sadly, first time voters.
Coalition possibilities: For the sake of preventing afd to gain even more power, we hope for a cdu, spd and grüne coalition. But as I said before, the cdu was willing to work with the afd not too long ago and only rowed back because of public demands, but the cdu‘s goals stay the same nontheless. Friedrich merz, cdu leader, lies and contradicts himself a lot to get more votes. You could say he uses the same tactics like trump. So it wouldn’t surprise me when he lied about the cdu, spd, grüne coalition too and would choose the afd (depending on the final percentage outcome of course). Let’s hope for the best.
New information:
Voter gender and generation distribution chart got released. Generational distribution is mostly as expected and mentioned in previous post. But here the shocker informations:
Cdu and afd want to get rid of women‘s rights, but guess who women voted for 🙃
And apparently the most votes for the afd came from the younger generations, more than we thought…There was information before that lots of misinformed first voters vote for afd, but to see THIS is appaling. On the other hand, the largest chunk of the votes for the left party, die linke, came from gen z. So gen z is currently in a left-right battle.
okay but like, as much as I am a fervent proponent of “not every ship should get married and in fact some of them would Never” - especially in context of enemies-to-lovers - I hope that everyone who sees me posting like that knows I am not talking about Spuffy. in fact, I would go so far as to say they are the two characters most willing and even desperate to get married that I’ve ever seen.
one of Buffy’s most persistent struggles is her right to girlhood and the inevitable expiration date she faces as the Slayer. she’s forced to fight and claw for every possible milestone that other girls around her take for granted - trying out for the cheer squad, running for prom queen, going to college, etc. one of the nightmares she has after killing Angel is about being unable to be a bride and get married. in Something Blue, she throws herself into wedding planning with a passion that speaks to her having daydreamed about it. in most cases, her commitment issues veer toward clinging rather than avoidance, and marriage is absolutely one of those beautiful, unreachable things that were ripped away from her when the Powers chose her. it haunts her.
Spike is probably even more obvious - he’s a man from Victorian England, a society that held marriage on a pedestal. furthermore, he is fundamentally a creature of devotion, never straying from Drusilla for over a century, and then from Buffy even after she was dead. their desperation is also quite similar - Spike’s original community had considered him undesirable, barring him from a love match; and while a union may have been arranged for him as a human, his vampirism took that option away entirely, in the same way that Buffy’s becoming did it. during Something Blue, he is just as committed to planning the minutiae of the wedding as Buffy is, even though they could’ve just decided to do it at the courthouse and get it over with under a shoehorned pretext. he’s been dreaming of a wedding for 150 years, let’s be real
Spuffy would’ve gone insane about a wedding. they would’ve fallen in love worse. they would have threatened each other with divorce constantly but stayed married anyway for however long they lived. hell, they should’ve done it just for the CPS reasons in season 6, just imagine having to hide it from everyone except the government, lest Anya thinks they’re trying to steal her thunder
my frankenstein body falling apart every day. sad
