“If you think for one moment that the Coronian crown will be offering you any form of shelter or asylum you are sadly mistaken.”

Figures.

The outcome wasn’t surprising and yet he had to try his luck.

“I was told Corona was recruiting skilled sailors, I didn’t seek an audience with his majesty, but the admiral of the fleet insisted I present myself to you first”

The man was just covering his butt and Hans knew that, but he was running out of options faster than he liked to admit.

"Yes, sailors not traitors to my allies." Frederic said, he was still fuming. Rapunzel and Eugene had told him all about what had happened in Arendelle.

If he could, he would have hopped on a ship and gone to pledge his allegiance to Elsa himself. But a letter carried by a diplomat was the best he could do at short notice.

"You tried to murder the queen and the princess of Arendelle, how am I to know you won't try the same thing here?"

“That is very kind of you, I would be honored to join the queen for lunch,” Frederic said with a wink.
When Elsa mentioned his coming alone, Frederic nodded, “I’m afraid her Majesty stayed behind to care for our people and Rapunzel is tending to her duties as Crowned Princess. She had a charity event that she couldn’t postpone I’m afraid.”

“Perhaps next time, I’m glad you’re here regardless. It means so much to myself and to Arendelle that our Kingdoms unite again as I’m sure it does to Corona too. When the gates closed my Father agonized over losing not just allies but friends he loved. Arianna and yourself among them. It’s my hope our people can be together again.”

“That would make me most happy.” Frederic smiled, “Your father was a dear friend. I miss him dearly, but I am glad to see how beautiful his daughter has become.” Speaking of his dear friend’s beautiful daughters.

“And where is your sister? I hear she’s betrothed.”

Chuckling, Frederic embraced the young queen, the same way he would embrace Rapunzel.
“I would not have missed this trip for the world,” He said still hugging the woman he loved like a daughter. “I had to see what a kind, beautiful young woman you have become.”

Elsa’s arms barely fit around the broad shouldered man. He was as warm as when she was a child and his embrace fill her with love she has craved for too long. “Wait until you see Anna.” she laughs with him and kisses his cheek.

“You must be tired for the voyage, have you eaten? There’s lunch waiting for us while your things are taken up to yout room.” She glances to the gangplank where luggage is being unloaded and notes that Rapunzel isn’t with him. “You came alone, I take it.”

Frederic had been engaged to Princess Arianna for as long as he could remember. They had tried to correspond on and off since Frederic had been 16 but not even that could prepare him for the arrival of his bride

Standing beside his father in the throne room, Frederic bowed the foreign princess as she entered, and stepped forward to kiss her hand.

“Your Highness, it is a pleasure to finally make your acquaintance,” he said rather unconvincingly.

Arianna hoped her nervousness wasn’t too obvious, and she tried to still her trembling as the prince kissed her hand. Her eyes momentarily darted to the king, silently hoping she hadn’t forgotten anything; protocol, one of the many court rules, or her shoes.

She made a quick curtsy, “The pleasure is mine, your highness.” Arianna nearly cringed at her own words. Dear lord, that sounded pitiful

Frederic noticed his betrothed’s eyes glancing towards his father, who remained gruff and silent. Frederic was no stranger to how intimidating his father could be, especially to newcomers.

“You must be exhausted from your journey, shall I have someone bring you tea in the gardens while the servants unpack your things?” He asked, offering Arianna a way out.

Frederic had been fond of Elsa from the moment she was born, as her Godfather, he supposed he had to be. Elsa had written to him on and off throughout the years that Rapunzel was missing, and while she had not taken Rapunzel’s place in his heart, she helped ease the ache for a child’s love.
Arriving in the Great Hall in Arendelle’s castle, Frederic beamed at the sight of Elsa, no longer a child but a queen anointed.
“My Dearest, Elsa. It is so good to see you!”

The man she knew has been through letters of comfort and guidance through the years and Elsa has grown attached to the paternal figure he’s become to her. Seeing him in person feels almost overwhelming.  “It’s really you…”

Sometimes she has wondered what might have been different had Frederic and Arianna been allowed to fulfill their role as Godparents to herself and Anna. Maybe everything could have been different.

“I never thought I would get to actually meet you face to face again.”

Arianna smiled at the soothing feeling of her husband stroking her hair. She reached up to caress his jaw with her thumb and gently kissed him on the lips. “Have I ever told you how much I love you?”

“Yes,” Frederic chuckled as he continued to stroke his wife’s hair, leaning into her touch like a lover in a sonnet might. He was still madly in love with Arianna all these years later.

“But telling me once more won’t hurt.”

“Don’t say that, Varian.” Frederic sighed, “we will free your father, you just have to keep hope alive, it will take time… but I promise you, I will not rest until he is freed and you two are reunited.”
In answer to the boy claiming he had gone over and over everything again and again. Frederic looked at the boy seriously. “You are still young, you may be very clever, but you don’t know everything. We will find a way, I promise.”

He twitched, frowning a bit. Honestly, he prided himself on being smart, on knowing quite a bit more than anyone else his age. He studied, and learned, about a wide variety of topics. He could recite kingdom laws from memory, could easily recall imports and exports of neighboring kingdoms as well as their own, and not only that, he had a great memory for formulas, mathematical equations, and even biology. He understood physics, astronomy, even history too.. He knew all of it, could talk about it all at length if asked to do so.

But to hear someone say, he didn’t know everything..? King Frederic was right, and Varian knew it. There were still a lot of things he wasn’t so well versed in, but.. Regarding what had happened to his father..? That.. That was one thing he was beyond well versed in by now..

“I’d bet I know quite a bit about this..” He replied. “I have tried everything possible to free my dad, and nothing has worked. What can you do that I haven’t already tried..?” For a brief moment, there was a note of hope in his voice. Maybe there was something the king had thought of that he hadn’t. Maybe there was that chance.. And.. Right now, as much as he may push others away.. Varian wanted to have hope. He wanted to believe that they could free his father, and that he could go home, and it would all work out all right..

Image

“I don’t know,” Frederic admitted sadly. “That’s why I summoned the brightest minds in the world, they’ll be coming to see you once they arrive so that you can all work together to free your father.”
