the anthem of a bird with a broken wing

[ID: a person kneeling with three feathered wings stretched out behind them. They have brown skin, a pale indigo shirt and pale green skirt, and long, straight hair in an aroace flag gradient. Their hands are pressed over their face like they're crying, their hair falling over it as well. Two wings are full and whole, colored like the aro and ace flags. The third is broken and translucent, with traces of blood on the broken feathers. It's colored faintly in the rainbow, bi, pan, lesbian, and straight colors.]

I Will Write A Fic For You If You Donate to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund!

I came across the super cool organization Fandom Trumps Hate just recently (as of this post actually), and unfortunately I learned of its existence too late to apply to be one of the writers for this year. Since I don't want to wait a whole year to do some good with my love of writing, I'm holding my own little auction! Let's use that autistic special interest for good!

How Much I Will Write: 1K-5K words (if I end up writing more, well, yay for the lucky auction winner I guess, but that's what I'm willing to commit to)

What Fandoms I Will Write For: Baldur's Gate 3, The Dragon Prince, Good Omens, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Loki (just... the character. I will write so many things involving that character)

What I Will (and Will Not) Write: Character x Character, Character x reader, Character x OC even if you can give me enough about your OC, are all good! Not into shipping? No worries! I love the platonic and I can even just write a character study or a songfic. I am willing to write up to M rating for this, so some spicy stuff, but not pure smut. Any of the Main Warning Tags on AO3, save Major Character Death (gotta love that angst), are off limits. If you are worried that I can't write your idea before you want to bid, go ahead and shoot me a message before you bid and I'll let you know! You can also check out my pinned post for my masterlist of past fics. I have written all the examples I have given as requests before.

How to Bid: Place the dollar amount (in US $) of your bid in the replies of this post! The bidding period begins at the time of posting, March 3 2024 12pm ESR and ends March 10th 2024 2pm EST.

What Happens If You Win: When the bidding closes I will message the top bidder from this account here on tumblr. From there, you have 48 hours to send proof of your donation. I'm giving myself a deadline of a month to have your fic ready for you.

If the winner does not send proof of donation before the time period is up, I will contact the first runner up.

Additionally, I will match the winning bid in my own donation up to $100

AND A FINAL WARNING

The purpose of this endeavor is for fun fic writing and most importantly, doing a little bit of good for the Palestinian people. Any bigotry done on this post will result in the perpetrator being blocked and disqualified from receiving a fanfic.

Bidding period is half over! Remember that it doesn't have to be much, the number to beat right now is $5

My betrothed's DnD character Kahriq is a half elf cleric/fighter. She fell in love with my character Orion, who was secretly a dragon sent to spy on her. After they resolved the drama, they embarked on a quest to turn Kahriq into a dragon too. So here's Kahriq's new dragon form for when they accomplish this goal.

Under the cut is the character concept and her mortal form.

Question for people who have tried both long and short hair styles and prefer long: Why?

to clarify, this is no judgement I'm purely curious, especially for writing purposes, since I used to have long hair and can't stand letting it grow out now

The Cold Ever After is out today from Titan comics! Written by Jeremy Whitley with art my Megan Huang and letters by Taylor Esposito!

It's one part Arthurian romance, one part noir detective story, and one part queer love story! What more could you want? Action? Fighting? Oh, there's plenty of that!

Come for the love and mystery. Stay for the bloody violence and anti-imperialism!

You guys know how to travel in a car with your canes, right? You know where to put them so they don’t kill you in an accident? You’re not just holding them on your lap?

For the record they go under your feet or under the seat. That’s the safest place for them except the trunk. Pls don’t let your mobility aid kill you in a freak accident

I’ve been driving with my cane wrong the entire time 😃

If this post saves even just one (1) person from ending up with a broken jaw/face/windshield I will be happy tbh

Nobody deserves to have to deal with maxillofacial surgeons or worse…. auto glass repair shops

For rigid blindness canes that don’t collapse and don’t fit in those other locations, it goes between your seat and the door/wall of the car. Not flung across the backseat, not hanging out in the middle of the car between the passenger seat and the driver seat, but slid neatly Between the side of your seat and the doors of the car next to you. Ideally as low to the floor of the car that it’ll go.

Better yet, make sure it goes behind the seatbelt, not over top of it, so once you actually buckle your seatbelt, the cane is still tucked neatly between the seat and the door, rather than Hanging out on your shoulder because the seatbelt pulled it out.

Rigid canes are fantastic things that get excellent feedback compared to folding, so please don’t see this as a reason not to use a rigid cane, but please do store them correctly when you’re in a car. It will be a heck of a lot safer and more convenient, too.

A lot clicked for me when my mom said the reason she was so reactive towards me as a kid was that she assumed intent behind things I did, rather than recognizing my behaviors for being normal kid behaviors or normal autism behaviors. So I got treated as if I was an adult who was intentionally doing things to upset her. She'd react to me like I had the maturity and wherewithal to do things in a cruel or manipulative way, making her life harder, when I was just existing. Just trying to learn how to cope and be a person myself. When she told me this I stopped in my tracks trying to process. Why would anyone's default assumption be that a kid is trying to antagonize them instead of like, struggling with something they're experiencing? But she was also raised the exact same way, treated like everything she did carried the weight of adult responsibility, not seen as a kid.

As a child therapist who focuses on audhd kids THIS!! So often parents put intent behind kids actions when it’s just “kid trying to feel safe and comfortable”. babies are not trying to “manipulate “ you, kids and teens are just pushing back to figure out the boundaries of their world, if a kid doesn’t like something don’t force it on them. Stop expecting better emotional regulation from your child than you’ve ever shown them.

For people with anxiety about filing taxes, here’s what things that happen when you make a mistake on your tax return:

- it gets corrected

- you get a letter in the mail either asking for some additional information or a letter showing the adjustment

- you pay the amount (there’s options for payment plans too!) or get a refund

Things that do not happen

- you’re “in trouble”

- you are charged with fraud

- you go to jail

I know that most people are probably just joking/exaggerating when they say a mistake on their return means they get thrown in jail but when I worked with the public I always would encounter people who believed that would happen and they would be panicking about it. So I like to put this out there every year because if I can even prevent one person from feeling that way, it’s worth it

Annual reblog of this important information.

The thingy above where you sign your tax form says that you’ve filled it out to the best of your ability.  “Sir, I am a dumbass” is 100% a valid defense

Also, as someone who knows an IRS agent....fraud is such a hassle! They would rather not! It is easier to submit a revision than open a fraud case against you! And they will try 50x to get it fixed with the least amount of fuss.

You will get a letter. You will get another letter. Then you will get a letter you have to sign for. Then you will get a phone call saying they are sending you a letter you have to sign for. They will call again about the letters they sent you. They will say "please respond to my letter. Please. Respond. I know you got them. You signed for it. Please respond."

Believe me. 99% of them would Rather Not.

Why am I just now realizing David Tennant Voices Spitelout?

He does change his voice quite a bit as Spitelout! But lol, that's the only redeeming quality about Spitelout: he's voiced by David Tennant. In all other ways, the guy sucks.

Please imagine a pithy title about fresh starts here.

(crossposted from Patreon)

Coming into 2024, I had big plans for how I was going to get back on track and get back to posting once a week and yeah, obviously, that hasn’t happened.

But what I have been doing is looking at my Patreon and at my own projects and figuring out some things I need to do differently. Last April, I changed my nom de plume because I wanted a fresh start. Now it’s time to give this entire Patreon project a refresh.

Here’s what’s happened so far:

  • Deleted my old A.F. Linley website and gave up the domain; the cost for hosting has risen by $200/year and I wasn’t using it as much as I thought I would back in 2018. Also I kept getting spam emails through the contact page.
  • Took down my Smashwords account; the single title I had managed to self-publish, a short story collection called Creeps, Ghouls and Jewels, had some serious formatting issues that it was not going to be worth the time/money to correct. Plus, I’m not happy with the changes that have come since Smashwords merged with Draft2Digital. (I’m considering moving to Payhip for future self-pubbed titles but that’s a discussion for a different post.)
  • I’m starting the process of taking down my Redbubble shop and....Okay, actually, I might have done that already? I just went to grab a link to the site in case anyone wanted to order a Moonicorns t-shirt before I deactivated but uh, it looks like it might’ve deactivated itself? Anyway, merch isn’t the right direction for me at this time, but I’ve still got all the actual designs and I really do like the “Finishing Things is Hard” logo, so I’m definitely going to hang onto that and slap that onto some stuff at a different print-on-demand site in the future.

Here’s what’s happening next:

  • New posting schedule: Starting in April, patrons will receive one short non-fiction post every week (500-1k words) and a piece of fiction every month (2-2.5k words). Oddments posts will continue to be free to read, but these take a decent amount of research and will be sporadic, basically happening around patron-only posts.
  • Revised patron tier perks: Getting rid of physical rewards and adding more digital ones. More details to come.

Current and long-time patrons: Thank you for sticking around while I get my shit together. I say that frequently. I mean it every single time.

Potential new patrons: Hello. I have just met you, and I love you. My name is Ethan, I live in a 200-year-old house and I’m writing a novel called The Lion’s Paw. It’s set in 1925 and is about an immortal queer disaster woman and what happens when 400+ years of terrible decisions catches up with her.

(I will neither confirm nor deny that she was inspired by H.G. Wells from Warehouse 13.) (Yes I will confirm it, she totally was.)

There are séances and ghostly possession and psychics, there is historical romance, and psychological horror, there are haunted houses and artists behaving badly and a lot of ladies making out.

I post about my writing process and all the weird little historical niches that pop up during my research. Frequent topics include:

  • Spiritualism
  • Cryptids
  • Historical curiosities
  • Medical quackery
  • Weird tech
  • General oddball occurrences and serendipitous intersections of history, folklore, and culture

And sometimes when I’m really bored I write short fiction via random prompts.

If any of that appeals to you, please consider subscribing! I’d love to have you along for this journey and my caffeine habit needs all the support it can get.

In retrospect perhaps at 9 pm on a Sunday was not the best time to start posting blog updates but oh well, neither is 6:30 am on a Monday, I am very good at this.
