ā€œThat sounds like a good ideaā€¦ā€¦.ā€-ā€œIs there something bothering you with the idea?ā€-ā€œNo, the idea is GOODā€¦..šŸ™‚ā€

Can someone explain this to me?

Old people use quotation marks to indicate emphasis, as a substitute for italics (which many of them could not produce on the old typewriters they learned to write on), whereas young people use them to indicate sarcasm or falseness. Theyā€™re used as ā€œscare quotesā€.

And old people use ellipses simply to indicate a pause, or for some other incomprehensible reason Iā€™m not aware of. But young people use ellipses to indicate passive-aggression.

So an old person could type something like:

how are things going with your ā€œboyfriendā€ā€¦.

and what they mean is

How are things going with your boyfriend? [Im so excited for you, sweetie, and I wanna hear about it]

But a young person would interpret that sentence as

How are things going with your so-called boyfriendā€¦. [I say, while seething with contempt for him and possibly for you too]

The linguistic difference across generations is beautifully explained here thank you

I have this problem with my father. Do you know how nerve wracking it is when he sends a message that says ā€œ you should look at thisā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€ and its a picture of our fucking cat?

I really like how it feels like each character represents different player styles. Or specs.

Lucy feels like the player that just ~can't~ be mean to the npcs. Tries to talk down violent npcs. Maxed charisma.

Norm is the player who'd read all the computer entries and flavor text. Lore is really important to him. Perception and intelligence are maxed so he can hack and lockpick anything.

Max is a bit of a bro who thinks they want a BoS playthrough because military hoorah, but ends up really really liking a companion that dislikes half of your choices that align with the BoS. Would probably force close the game if he saw [Lucy disliked that.] To try again. Also maxed luck.

Coop clearly wants to be a badass that shoots first and asks questions later, but ends up being a lovable rouge who begrudgingly helps the npcs. Maxed agility.

character in a movie: Oh no, angry dog, please donā€™t bite me!

the dog: Iā€™m at work! Iā€™m doing so good at being at work! Iā€™m barking because my handler gave the sign ā€˜barkā€™! I am going to get such a good grade in being a dog actor, which is completely possible to achieve, and normal to want! I am doing a great job! I am proud of myself for doing such a great job! I love this, because Iā€™d make it physically impossible to get anything done if I wasnā€™t enjoying it! Iā€™m barking!

I love seeing dogs and wolves in movies because theyā€™re acting so viciousĀ but also their tails are wagging so hard unless the post-processing guys specifically edited out the tails (which is slightly less obvious but also hilarious in a different way once you spot it).

This is why I love the dog in the original casting of The Thing so damn much. I have never seen an acting dog move with such a deliberate, calm intent. It was like every single motion and gesture this animal made was intentional.

Apparently, according to the behind-the-scenes documentation, this dog was just fuckin like that. Almost never, if at all, looked at the camera crews and production teams. Never excitedly wagged his tail on set no matter how much of a good boy he was being. If he did, it was the sameā€¦ deliberate motions.

His name was Jed, and even though heā€™s a dog, he deserves an oscar. He was an exceptionally good boy.

Jed also played the role of White Fang in the 90s Disney film version!

I honestly canā€™t imagine a better portrayal of a stoic, aloof White Fang, who gradually softens, than Jed.Ā  Good boy.

That dog knows his job, and knows heā€™s damn good at it, and knows heā€™s probably better at his job than his coworkers.

That dog was delivering straight up Shakespearean performances, and he probably was saddled with human coworker who had to make use of such unprofessional things as second takes.

My condolences, Jed, my condolences.

Hi Mike! I love your work. The Haunting of Hill House is a favorite of mine. I am very interested in the history of the house and the ghosts (unnamed ghosts as well). I read somewhere that at the time the show was filming, you were working on a history of Hill House type of story. I wanted to know if that was true.

Avatar

This is true. The cold open of several episodes, starting with episode 2, were going to be devoted to the history of the house, and set up a lot of context about the individual ghosts we'd meet. We had gone as far as to start casting the roles and figuring out how to build various versions of the set to show the house itself under construction, but we had a lot of budgetary issues on that show and were forced to cut the history sections entirely. I really dug these sections, and I think they would have been very cool.

UPDATED: Here are all of those script pages, from episodes 2, 4, and 7 respectively. Hope you enjoy.
