WIP Intro: Clip Your Wings

You would expect peace after war.

The students at Olympus Academy expected it, especially after five years after their leader, R.K. Calimeris and daughter of Posedao, stopped the downfall of Zeus and Olympus at the hands of a rouge prophet, a power-hungry warrior, and Kronos. R.K. herself is at peace, enjoying this new stage of her life.

And then R.K. suddenly vanishes.

Questions emerge just as quickly as a new prophecy begins, and a boy from an entirely different side of the gods appears.

Throughout the three parts, one question starts to rise: how needed is Zeus, really?

Themes: Downfall of kings, family and friendship, rebellion, prophecy and its mysterious ways

Contains: PTSD, battle, blood, swearing, the Greek gods, Zeus

I finally got a title for this wip!

■In my world there are two kingdoms.

The two are opposite to eachother in nearly everything but most importantly, the use of magic.

One,let's call its A, uses magic their enemies. Ranging from elemental magic to spiritual creatures that help the army crash their enemies.

So kingdom B,is really really against to the use of magic(not that anyone knows how to use it or is allowed to except for those who do gets to be burned .And the capital mage who is considered cursed and the only exception who is chosen every generation and they use him in emergencies. )and feels threatened by the presence of kingdom A near them . Fearing that one day they will conquer their lands and would succeed because of the incredible strength the kingdom holds with the use of magic.

So they take an opportunity presented to them by the alliance of another kingdom to sneak into the A kingdom and surprise them with war by using some clever strategies and such .

1.Getting to the point, would it be okay to take one of the heirs alive and turn them into a slave for the royal family of B just in mocking and showing their power?

2.If not, what can they do instead to said heir that is considered mocking them?

3.Also when a kingdom falls, conquered by another. What usually happens?

  1. Not OK. It's possible bit it can backfire because it can be seen as the dishonourable choice. Killing your enemies is fine, humiliating them can sometimes be beyond the pale.
  2. Marching in a triumph which is basically a big parade showing off spoils of war, where the heir can be jeered at and verbally abused.
  3. Resources are seized, cities are sacked, leaders are deposed or executed and army and naval forces are surpressed. New leaders are installed.

Hello! In snow white and the huntsman, during the wedding, shouldn't snow white have been in front of ravenna since she was a princess despite ravennas engagement to the king? and because I'm pretty picky, shouldn't snow's hair had been up?

Avatar

Yes, Snow should have walked ahead of Ravenna but no, Snow's hair is accurate because she's just a kid and unwed.

Hello! In a noble family, what should the sitting arrangement in the dining table be? I know that the Lord of the House sits at the center table but what about his children? Is it by title or age order or by birth?

As an author, your expertise is invaluable is this arena, and with this particular character developmental question: Why are there so few viscountesses in fiction? Is it just because writers are too lazy to type all the extra letters there? Have a great weekend, and thank you for everything, Duchess. ;)

I just thinks it's mainly that most people may not know what a viscount/ess is and writers tend to try make it more familiar for readers because most would know titles such as Duke better.

I have a sort of Femme Fatale upperclass idea in my head. Due to her familial situation and upbringing, she doesn’t look fondly upon society’s viewpoint that a women’s duty is to marry well and care for her husband’s household, and raise children.

in an attempt to bridge the lack of affection from her family during childhood, she clings to material things (ex: jewelry, makeup, because the lessons in her family that a women’s looks and ability to have children matter more than intelligence after a certain point stuck at least a little bit), and begins flirting with others - and later having flings.

This is around the 50’s/60’s era, I’m thinking, and in Japan, so this also takes place after the reformation of the school system, and she goes and gets higher learning to further divorce herself from family and gain dependence on the family money/expectations of being a young lady. (Around early her 20’s?)

She uses seduction as a way of building connections (honeypot, essentially), and also swindling people out of their money (via bars, casinos, personal parties thrown, it’s a speakeasy situation. later ties into an underground business venture with a partner), and I was wondering how she’d be hide it?

a women sleeping around, no matter how fabulously wealthy, would be ruined by that information getting out, so it has to be hidden. Especially in Japan, because for sometime before the war there was the good wife, wise mother line of thinking - and it still persists, I think, to this day just a little bit?

There’s a lot about the purity and fidelity of a woman that is very important, especially for said character - at least publicly - because it would get her in very big trouble both society-wise and with her family.

(plus, I’m pretty sure it only became illegal for a man to murder his wife on account of adultery in 1908? Which…considering at this point in the character’s life, it’s the 50’s or 60’s and in the grand scheme of things not that long ago….)

She had to hide it either with a marriage of convience with somebody or by hiring trustworthy servants or avoiding this behaviour in her homeland and go abroad where she'd likely get away with it easier.

Has there ever been a case of an elective monarchy working out long-term? If so, how is the system maintained for it to be stable enough to last so long, and if not, what causes it to fall?

Irish tanistry was successful for a long period of time. It was maintained because of the pool of candidates were all of a select group and power was awarded to the candidate who proved most formidable and wise. Falling apart requires jealously, tampering and possibly even some underhanded tactics such as murder

Hello! I was wondering in the case of a succession war -- 3 royals all fighting over the same castle/territory -- where would said royals all go? In this case they all have allies fighting for their side, but obviously they couldn't all stay in the same castle while duking it out (I assume). Would one stay and force the others out while fighting for titles (and how would that work if so?), would they all leave and stay with their respective allies? How would they be hosted in that case?

(your blog is awesome btw! and a huge help to my writing endeavors :D)

They could stay in the castle if it was a battle of verbal claims but if it's pitched fights your after, then it's likely they would withdraw to a nearby stronghold to consolidate their power and then march on the castle.

would rivers ever be used for travel throughout a city in the 1700s? Where & how?

Yes, they would be used by the wealthy and poor using rowboats, barges and other small vessels for trade, travel and pleasure

Hello. I was reading about a Queen consort/technically queen regnant named berengaria of Castile who had her marriage annulled by the pope due to consanguinity. However, the pope decided that the children they had during their marriage were still legitimate and were still able to inherit both parents’ lands. I was thinking about writing a story based on this scenario, but one of the things I wanted to change was having the king or queen marry other people after her annulment. If they did remarry, would that cause any problems from their children in their first marriage? Even if her kids were still deemed legitimate, would anyone kick up a fuss about their parent’s marriage being annulled as a way to prevent them from inheriting over any children from a future marriage?

No, if the pope insists they are legitimate any children their parents have would come after them in succession.

Hello! Is it possible for two siblings- in this case twins- to be given a shared title for a place if the overall territory isn't big enough for many other places to be made dukes or earls of? i.e., "the dukes of wherever"? I hope this is worded clearly!

No. Usually one gets everything and the other gets a consolation prize

This is less for a wip and more for help in interpreting a character from a story I like, but - in case of wealthy/noble families - how might the elders (be it family heads, or simply the older generations) control and manipulate the grown heir/heiress?

In said character's case they were around mid-20's, the majority of the family had perished in an earthquake and they were chosen as a heir simply because the position needed to be filled, belonging to a branch family. if they didn't know how to lead, said elders wouldn't lose the power they still had left as they might have if another person actually closer to succession was still alive.

Would it be a matter of disowning/replacing the puppet heir (or at least threatening to?), threatening to withhold money from them (were still raised relatively wealthy, so being disowned would sever them from their funds and the remnants of the lifestyle they knew). Or even actually periodically withholding what money remained, only giving it once they fell in line?

Besides that, what other ways could the person be manipulated, and then later break free of the elder's influence?

They can withhold money from her and even restrict her movements. They can limit her interactions with any friends or family they don’t approve of or even have them forcibly removed.
