Let’s start with the first romantic coupling we see in ElfQuest: Nightfall and Redlance. Also in frame are two more members of the ❤️ ⭕️, Cutter and Skywise, but they have a lot of story ahead before their relationship collectively becomes deep enough to coalesce into a group bond. For now, this is the OG love on the page.

It’s wild to see letters in the back of the original ElfQuest issues wondering if the female elves were also warriors and hunters. Oh honey, you don’t even know what you’re reading yet! But it makes sense - the Wolfriders are in crisis when we first meet them, so we don’t see them in their normal roles right away.

Nightfall’s only concern right now is that her lifemate Redlance could still die from the effects of being tortured by humans.

The Wolfriders are forced to flee the only home they’ve ever known as the humans burn the forest down. Tricked into a desert trek, Redlance has no time to recover, and Nightfall won’t leave his side - even if the others must go on in the hopes of finding water.

The second printing has extra scenes, including this beautiful page (above) of backstory, showing Nightfall’s precious memories of their love.

The fifth member of ♥️ ⭕️ - Leetah the healer - enters the picture (more on this in the next post).

One of the key aspects of being a Wolfrider is having a soul name. We later learn that other groups of elves never developed this psychic protection, hand in hand with their advanced telepathy, in order to survive continual conflict with humans (and more).

Soul names are normally kept secret, even between lifemates, unless the mystical phenomenon known is as Recognition suddenly strikes and reveals each other’s soul completely. To voluntarily give a soul name to another is an act that goes beyond mere love.

As readers in 70s and 80s, it was refreshing to see what could be viewed as an inversion of our gender stereotypes - Nightfall the skilled huntress and fierce warrior, Redlance the gentle shaper of green growing things. Yet this never meant that Nightfall wasn’t nurturing and warm, or that Redlance wouldn’t fight with every ounce of his being to preserve life by any means.

Below, he relives the nightmare of losing their forest home to fire - but this time he can do something about it.

Whatever support is needed, that’s what the other person offers.

Even if it’s just being nearby when your beloved is trying something hard.

Get yourself a Nightfall. And/or a Redlance. Who knows how you might grow with loving support?

the "came back wrong" trope except like... they didnt. like this mad scientists wife died, and so he studied necromancy, brought her back, and she came back and it all worked. like she came back exactly the same as she was before with literally no difference. but the scientist guy is like "oh no... what have i done.... shes Different now!!!! she came back Wrong!!!!" and shes just like. chilling. reading a book. cooking dinner. shes just so so normal but in the guys mind hes like "oh shes soooo weird" but shes just normal

While she was dead he put his memory of her on such a high pedestal that she could never live up to it alive

alternatively‚ she came back perfectly fine but he thinks she came back wrong‚ because the tragic reality is that he never actually knew his wife

im going INSANE thats MY POST.

It's your post but the journey to posting it changed it to such a degree that even its closest intimacies are now foreign to you. Sorry dude.
