Hey Calvin! How is the animation process for Close Enough? is it the same way as Regular Show is made? like it takes 9 months for one episode and it is animated in Korea? what are the different aspects of making Close Enough?

The overall process is the same animation wise. Yes, it goes overseas for animation once we lock down the storyboard. We’re going from 11 minutes to 22 minutes so naturally it takes longer.

The biggest and most different challenge has been writing stories that can hold an adult audience’s attention. There’s a lot more story juggling now because we have A and B and C…. and sometimes even D plots! We can’t really get away with stories as simple as “Rigby wants a burrito” anymore!

We can now reference real life things and people, which is pretty crazy. That was a definite no no before. We’d always have to come up with a “our universe” version of stuff.

also we’re allowed to say “shit” and “asshole” now

Is Sam Marin going to be voicing a character in Close Enough? Would be really cool to have him back for JGs next show!

Sam’s taking a little break from VO to get deeper into theater right now, but of course we’d love for him to do something for us!!

I'm not sure when/if Cartoon Network will post Legendary Place, so would you mind sharing a bit of info on your pilot?

I can’t say too much, but maybe I can talk about it’s genesis… Legendary Place came from me trying to think up of a concept for a show. One day I ended up at a Burbank Chinese restaurant to eat lunch. While eating my Broccoli Beef special, I noticed two small kids, a brother and a sister, just hanging out and playing like it was their living room. This situation was immediately familiar to me. This made me think of me and my brothers childhood hanging out after school at the restaurant where my mom worked. We’d make our own fun! A lot of immigrants can’t afford childcare or believe in paying for it, and so this was our after school– spending time with the parents at the family restaurant, hanging out at the businesses around it, going on adventures. So Legendary Place started from that!

On Star Wars Day we remember when Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) used the famous phrase on a Regular Show episode.

Sketchy Behaviors | Hellen Jo

Never afraid to speak and/or draw her mind, Los Angeles based artist and illustrator Hellen Jo and her characters can be described as rough, vulgar, tough, jaded, powerful, bratty and bad-ass, aka her own brand of femininity. Known for her comic Jin & Jam and her work as an illustrator and storyboard artist for shows such as Steven Universe and Regular Show, Hellen’s rebellious and sometimes grotesque artwork and illustrations are redefining Asian American women and women of color in comics. In fact, that’s why Hellen Jo was a must-interviewee for our latest Sketchy Behaviors where we talk to her about her love of comics and zines;  her antiheroines and the redefining what Asian American women/girl identity is or can be; and what her ultimate dream project realized would be.

Cheer Up Pops was written/storyboarded by Casey Crow and Gideon Chase, how'd you get to choose scenes on the floating screens? Did one of them ask you for help?

In the board there were just a bunch of placeholders for the screens. It would’ve been too much of Casey and Gideon to storyboard a whole ep AND fill up all the screens. So that came to the director-- aka me. I rolled up my sleeves, bit the bullet and did it! It took a VERY long time but it was fun and a little bittersweet picking my favorite scenes from all 8 seasons of the show.

Hiya Calvin! So in a previous post, u said that Rigby's daughters didn't have names, so I thought that maybe the blonde daughter could be named Elenor, and the raccoon daughter could be named something like Candice or Bianca, idk😂

I like them :) !

I just wanted to say thank you for truly bringing to life such an awesome show and such great characters. I think I read on reddit that you are going to be working on your own series? If true I can't wait to see it.

It’s not a whole series (yet), but I did do a pilot which will be released sometime in spring I’m told!
