❝     talk  like  that  &  i  might  worry  you’re  after  my  contacts .     which ,  if  you  are     —–     not  a  chance .

You caught me, Reyes jokes, all in a good natured tone. He raises his hands before dropping them back to his waist. In truth, he doesn't want Vetra's contacts. He has his own scattered about like stars dotting the sky. No, he wants her as a contact. She already has cultivated friendships on both sides of the line and a place on the Pathfinder's ship.

At least let me buy you a drink before I try to poach them, though.

“ And do you think I wanted a question answered with another one? Yes or no. It’s that simple. In a world that thrives off loopholes, Sloane knows only to accept no uncertain terms. All the would-be congenial charm only brings her one step closer to a headache.
Rising from her chair, a quick tilt of her head signals the Outcast guards to bring up her back. Remember that next time. Take us to the drop off.

Both of Reyes' hands rise in a placating gesture. Otherwise, he kept very still, as if he has stumbled across a viper's nest and hopes to escape quickly and quietly. Business with the Outcasts can be messy, but it pays well.

But he will remember this next time. Sloane doesn't seem to want friends here on Kadara. She just wants to be led to the docks and get her things.

He releases his breath, drops his hands to his hips and jerks his head towards the door. This way.

I mentioned this a few days ago but I tend to put unrealistic pressures on myself and end up burning myself out on writing. So I took a bit of a break.

I’m here, though. I’m gonna work on a few things. Hope you’ve all been well.

EVERYONE IS PIECEMEAL TO HIS MANIACAL POWER PLAY. Complex shadow & funerary games with a man who doesn’t exist——an ugly, dangerous truth.  She can see the way his honey-dripped eyes are alight, like he’s won something.  The HUNGRY dilation of the pupils because the high hasn’t been flushed from his veins yet.  Punch-drunk off himself.  & his metaphorical throne.
❝ Hardly. By looking at the current trend, you can predict an economic life cycle.  Future projections show that Kadara has not yet reached its peak, which is good ; I did the math.  I’m usually not wrong about my investments,
It’s cryptic, her last statement, because her eyes settle on him like a cutting scalpel.  Sighs at the prospect of yet another game.  It appears that these days she has become the kind of woman that gets lost in sixties dramas, living life like a mafia plot in an old Hitchcock film.  Not without the quintessential gun moll role.
She stares & he stares.  Shags off her jacket to the back of her chair——the whiskey, making her hot & delirious.

❝ I understand that’s no way to treat a lady. ❞  her expression portrays a rare ghost of what resembles a grin.  Nice & stiff & gnashed teeth.   Perfect for the  slick straw she pushes between them.  So do her a favor. ❞

Well, at least Ryder is well informed. Reyes can respect someone who goes through that much trouble to know exactly what they are getting into—and he should know, it's something he would do himself. He takes a moment to draw nonsensical patterns with the tip of his index finger into the condensation on his glass.

The grin he fixes Ryder with, though, is rakish. “You want a favor already, huh? For you, I will.”

He wipes the tips of his fingers onto his pants and stands, sauntering off with the confident swagger of someone who has the world in his pocket. In some ways, he does. Kadara Port is the only major settlement on the planet, and everything flows and travels under his scrutinizing gaze.

It's nice to be the ‘king’. For now.

Reyes returns with small shot glasses. He slides one her way. It's the expensive salarian shit. It might taste awful, but it's got a kick. And a price tag.

“ Patience. It’ll take a little time for the vault to work its magic. In the meantime, do what you do best: smuggle. Get some incense or something.
Ryder bends at the knees again, carefully sifts through the broken down rocks along the shore – mindful of letting her gloved fingertips stray too close to the water’s edge – and grabs a stone. A toss here, another there, testing the weight of it before she pulls back and lets it sail over the water’s surface.
    Skip, skip, skip. Still going.
And when it looks like it isn’t? A force not quite unseen ( no, the ultra blue of biotics is unmistakable ) propels it along.
    “ It’s not exactly a splash fight, but it’s a start.

Ryder's cheating. And oh, how Reyes approves of it. If he had biotics, he'd easily be doing the exact same thing.

image

It's more difficult than it looks to find a flat, smooth rock. Most of Kadara is pockmarked from corrosion of the water. To think that the angaran once came here before the water filters in the port were in place makes Reyes' stomach churn just a little. The last way he wants to go out is from his insides melting. He bends, picking up a suitable candidate.

Reyes tests his arm in a dramatic fashion and closes one eye as if it'll improve his aim. When the rock flies from his grip, there's no blue of biotics to help him along. It skips once, twice, a third time before disappearing beneath the deep blue of the water with a disappointed splash.

Don't worry, I'll hold you to it for when we can, he says, turning back to Ryder.

“Oh I don’t know. That human might be limping but looks like someone rather experienced. Not my credits, not my problem though.” She sat on the chair more comfortably and watched the scene with lack of interest.

“Unless the angara has a nice fancy trick unknown for the Milky Way folk. That might be possible.” She moved slightly her head to the left. A large knife flew near her right ear. “At least they don’t have biotics.”

     They're stronger than they look.

image

The angara in question delivers a haymaker that makes even Reyes wince over the edge of his glass and draws noises of pain from the crowd. There's also that little trick with electricity they can do—a nice counter move to biotics if need be—but this brute doesn't need that, it seems. Faster too. Wouldn't recommend going one-on-one with them.

the grin does nothing at all. evfra’s expression – or lack of one, maybe – doesn’t change at all. not even a twitch. no one has accompanied him on this trip ( they usually don’t, not to kadara ) so it is him, and only him. “i’m sure you’ve heard of the… exaltation process, by now. what they do to our people. and i’m sure you know it was the human pathfinder who found it out.” the words don’t come easy, his jaw locked together out of mere anger. that seems to be more and more of a common occurrence, these days.
image
“what can you tell me of the initiative?” he’s not asking any small question, here. he’s aware of that. but he trusts humans as far as he can throw them ( reyes included, seemingly ) and right now, his strength is in short supply.

Oh, that he has. It's all the buzz among the angaran residents of Kadara—their greatest enemy turns out to be themselves. The fear and worry about missing loved ones or what could become of the soldiers in the field is palpable. That, and the return of the Moshae. Vehn Terev is also a popular subject, though one people tend to spit after mentioning.

What do you want to know? Reyes asks in turn. There's a lot to the Andromeda Initiative, more than what can be summed up in a few sentences.

You took your sweet time. As greetings go, that’s as good as he’s getting. She suspects he’s actually on time but barely. Smart move. Sloane doesn’t settle for pomp and circumstance, suspense – the bullshit people call fashionably late. Well? Did your man have the shipment or not?
Image

Ah, Sloane Kelly, ever the charmer. He can practically feel the warm and fuzziness rolling off of her—if warm fuzziness had a loaded gun and a room full of armed thugs with loaded guns, of course. Reyes plants his feet firmly, and he puts his hands on his hips. The urge to cross his arms is quashed quickly. He won't show weakness here and now.

You think I'd be here otherwise? he asks, raising an eyebrow. There's doing good business, and then there's being stupid. And Reyes is not stupid. I'd offer to help move it but... you seem to have plenty of fine men with strong arms here.

Ryder looks from Reyes to the datapad and back again. He hasn’t been too forthcoming on the details – he rarely is, Ryder notes – but interest in putting tensions between the Initiative and Kadara aside remain her priority. So here she is, staring at the goopy datapad with a bemused expression.
“ Let me guess. This was important to you or someone else. I might be able to piece something together from a scan. SAM?
The AI’s voice chimes in via her omnitool so that both present can hear. Most data is lost to the damage. Trace fragments remain. Compiling. One moment.

That's what I like about you, Ryder, he says, gesturing in her direction.

Image

The datapad is the remnants of one of his latest jobs. There had been a line of cargo coming from the krogan settlement on Elaaden. There will be a lot of unhappy customers if he doesn't retrieve the cargo. More so if he doesn't retrieve the data he'd been running, as well. People will pay exorbitant prices for information on the colony, it seems.

Not that he blames them. Without Ryder, it'd been the Milky Way's only success. He laughs. You take initiative. And have that fancy AI.
