The team was trapped, everyone knew it.

Bucky  glares at the Hydra guard shoving him in to the far corner of the room next to Sam, Bucky rolls his eyes and curses his luck when Sam smirks at him.

It was supposed to be a clean mission, take an old Hydra base and go, what they didn’t expect was the base back up and running. Thus the reason three Hydra agents were looking over Steve’s shield while two others inspected Sam’s ‘backpack flight’ they called it in poor English, and Tony, stuck in his suit as an agent ever so often electrocuted him, making him immobile. No one made a move to grab Thor’s hammer as the one that tried was sporting a dislocated shoulder from trying to pick it up.

“We’re going to die.” Sam states dramatically as he stares sadly at his poor baby in the hands of the enemy, Natasha, sitting next to him jabs his ribs.

“Shut up, Birdy.”

A/N: A fic about living out your last years with Bucky. A re-write of a Dean W. fic because I thought it’d fit Bucky as well. 

The kids left, built up their own lives and had their own children. They no longer needed your cooking, no longer needed Bucky’s kisses on their foreheads to have a goodnight’s sleep. They left with pecks on your cheeks, tight embraces, and a promise to always call. “Love you, mom and dad,” they told the two of you. Bucky held your hand, his eyes tearing up, mirroring your own. You were happy, you had raised them the best you could. Yet you knew that they took a piece of your heart with them. They left emptiness behind. Empty bedrooms, empty chairs, an empty hole in your chest.

Bucky Barnes trails his fingertips over the letters etched on his skin countless times. He daydreams about her, meeting her, loving her, holding her. She is what makes him move when all he wants to do is curl up into a fetal position and wither away into obliviousness.

Bucky Barnes knows that he has to go back home, that she will be waiting for him back in the place he grew up in. He knows he has to survive this terrible war, that he has to be better, because she’s waiting for him.
