Well, that answered plenty of questions upfront. She seemed to be in the exact mindset he needed her to be in for them to pull this off. And her thought process wasn’t far off from his. “Agreed. I feel like I should expect resistance at every turn now. When there isn’t any, something seems fishy.” He studied her, taking his own words to heart. All it took was one undervalued and underestimated member to bring down their whole operation, but Delilah seemed loyal, despite the reputation she’d received here. He hoped she hadn’t gotten to her last straw yet and found Faron’s group of misfits enticing.
“That’s exactly the only way to stop the buildup,” he said, watching her, noticing how antsy she seemed. Don’t betray me, Delilah. “If only the source were easier to find.” Faron seemed to have multiple machines working at once, and it was difficult to pin down where they all were. He met Delilah’s gaze, a serious expression on his face. “I called you here to help me fix that.” Priam looked around as she had before, eventually turning back to her when he thought their privacy wouldn’t be invaded. “How do you feel about checking up on some leads I have?”
She nodded slowly, half taking in his words and half stuck in her own thoughts. Faron’s increasing control over the Capulet mob was making her nervous. She couldn’t get any of it out of her head, how he had so nonchalantly taken over Rafaella’s position, how he poisoned Cosimo and Juliana, the two people who were supposed to hold the most power in the group that Faron wanted to join. Except that he didn’t seem to want to join forces, he wanted his mob to cannibalize theirs. It was so unsettling to have a third presence in the war, especially since this one was impossible to avoid.
“But we already know the source,” she protested hesitantly. “The source of everything, the head of the snake if you will. You can’t tell me you don’t think we have that intel?” Delilah picked at the edges of her fingernails, holding eye contact. To be offered an out was one of the most glorious things Delilah could imagine. It didn’t come necessarily in the form she thought it would, but that mattered little. “You work fast,” she mused, feeling lighter knowing that Priam already had some ideas. Any way she could help with that, she would. No opportunity could be passed up, both to get rid of their new adviser and to prove herself as loyal once more. “Tell me.”
