Remus loves to take photographs of his friends, freezing time because there were so many things he didn’t want to forget. The sight of Sirius with his head thrown back and eyes shut, holding his stomach as he laughed until he couldn’t breathe. The reckless optimism shining in James’ eyes, the light pouring over his face as they lay in the summer sun. The one photo that makes Remus’ heart squeeze, the only picture with the three of them in it. Remus had propped the camera on a stone wall, set the timer, and ran like hell towards his friends, looping his arms over their shoulders just as the flash went off. James’ glasses were crooked and Sirius’ hair was a mess and Remus’ smile was all teeth, but it was perfect.

Most of his photos are stored in an old shoebox under his bed now, his fingers making marks in the layer of dust on those late nights when the memories just aren’t enough. When his lonely flat doesn’t feel like home, when it feels like those happy days were just a dream.

Part of the god damn tragedy of Sirius Black is that despite the trauma he experiences from his family, he still believes that life has been astronomically kind to him because he finds friends to be the most important thing in the world and he has the best of them. But then 1981 happens, and then Azkaban, and everything spirals so fast. I imagine a 5th year Sirius Black wrapping his arms around the marauders and saying “it’s a good life we live, boys.” I imagine a 35 year old Remus Lupin brushing a tear off Sirius’ cheek 20 years later and saying “life has not been so kind to us, Sirius.”
