[ID: a digital drawing of Hamid from Rusty Quill Gaming in front of a stock photo of a group of penguins.

Hamid is a brown-skinned Egyptian Halfling with curly black hair.

He's wearing a purple winter coat with a pulled up hood that's lined with fur.

Hamid is gesturing at them with both arms and is saying "Look at all those chicken!". /End ID]

I’ve been working on this on and off for like a week and I declare it finally DONE. I adore the Starblaster and her crew so much, I can’t believe how much good this story has added to my life in the last year. I basically owe Griffin and the tres horny boys my life for making 2017 so much better than it would have been without The Adventure Zone!

Shout-out to the Parthian diplomats who conspired to keep Rome and China ignorant of each other and thus preserve Persia's monopoly as the "end" of the silk road by just making up more and more outlandish lies. That shit was great.

So there are two incidents in particular

Rome and China were aware of each other’s existence but had never formally entered into any kind of relationship due to the difficulty of sending messages or diplomats over such vast distances back in those days, but Europe depended on China as a source of luxury goods and China depended on Europe as a market for luxury goods. This relationship was mediated by the various Persian dynasties who were well situated geographically and politically to do so and made a great deal of money that way.

China once attempted to send a delegation to Rome to open up formal relations. The delegation made it as far as "the Western Sea" (what that means is disputed but it was likely either the Black Sea or the Persian Gulf) and inquired about making the journey to Italy by sea. The Parthians told them that such a journey would take many years and be extremely dangerous. Which was a lie either way, since both the Black Sea and the overland route to the Levantine ports would drop them off in Romam territory within a matter of weeks or months.

Also, silk sold from east to west along the silk road was shipped in bulk orders of wildly varying quality, sort of like homespun wool, and the Romans made their comfy imperial togas by breaking down the bulk silk and reworking it into a lighter fabric. Parthian silk merchants came up with the absolutely galaxy-brained idea of buying up Roman silk and selling it back east, telling their Chinese suppliers that it was "European silk from European silkworms," thus doubling their profits and artificially deflating the price of bulk silk.

I respect them so much, honestly

"I know we don't say this enough, but thank you" and "that was the last conversation you ever had with your sister" and "you took fucking everything from me" and "you are my heart, taako" and "from your perspective, lup was there, and then she was gone" and "taako, what if she's just gone?" "...who?" and "but understand this. I have nothing, and I don't give a shit" and "are you the one who's been hurting my brother?...I'm going to fucking kill you now" and "you hear your sister's voice say" I'm gonna walk into the fucKING ocean

I think Americans need to understand how normal it is in other countries to have extremely limited hours of operation to ensure the sanity and health of workers are kept in tact. We are so accustomed and entitled to demanding people’s time that we forget that they’re… y’know… people

Being in Germany was really humbling because legit the GROCERY STORE would straight up close for almost 3 days because of how holidays would line up and the hours were already limited to literally be from 8-8 because people need to go home and live their own lives

It is very common for places in Spain to straight up shut down for 2-3 hours because people take siestas seriously since it gets hot and people deserve to take a nap

The world is not going to end if you’re inconvenienced by just… coming back later. We’ve been spoiled with immediacy and technology that we forget there was a point in time in human history where a person had to trek 20+ minutes down to the village bakery only to find it closed because of some family emergency and that just meant there would be no bread that day- and that’s okay!!

The discourse surrounding labor is so sad because we should not demand or expect things to be open 24/7 because we were not designed to be constantly moving machines. We need to relearn how to plan better since downtime is a wonderful opportunity to reflect and enjoy the moment. Not everything needs to be done with gusto and fervor. Sometimes it’s fine to pivot and just enjoy the moment for what it is and try again later. Touch more nature. Bask in the sun and rain. Breathe.
