Another interesting thing I noticed when rereading Hashirama’s flashback. Both Madara and Hashirama did the same thing – they both wrote warnings on one side of the stone they used for skipping. But despite the fact they both did this, it was Madara who came up with a plan of skipping stone instead of greeting first. I believe this shows Madara’s tactic nature, his quick instincts and also his great desire to protect both his family (mainly Izuna) AND his bond with Hashirama. With this I’m not trying to say Hashirama is incapable of being tactical (and to say he doesn’t want to protect his brother or Madara would be very untrue), however I would argue that in this particular moment Hashirama was…unsure what to do.

Here, we see it again: Madara is the one who quickly came up with a solution that he hoped would prevent him, Hashirama, Izuna or just anyone from dying. Hashirama in middle panel is very much in distress. He looks helpless and scared (for which I’m not blaming him at all) and when he starts speaking, the way he’s speaking is…very unlike him.

It’s quite tragic when you think about it. Stone skipping was how they met, it was how their friendship started. It was the thing that first brought them together and now it tored them apart, since they both “sacrificed” the stone of another to protect their brothers.
