To demonstrate opposition to the upcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup, protests, strikes and direct actions have been sweeping Brazil in massive numbers. Occupying a space next to Arena Corinthians in São Paolo, where the first match will be held, over 10,000 people are protesting in the name of Brazil’s Landless Workers Movement (MTST). Around the rest of Brazil, such as in Rio de Janeiro, countless others are organizing smaller protests against the government.
Their slogan is #NãoVaiTerCopa, or “There will be no Cup.” MTST coordinator Maria das Dores Cirqueira summarizes their grievances telling the LA Times, “When the government told us we would host the World Cup, we hoped there would be improvements for us. But they aren’t putting on a Cup for the people, they’re putting on a Cup for the gringos.”

Following on from the last post, here is a copy of the letter Manchester United sent to the supporter RE his lifetime ban for bringing a can of beer into a stadium.  Pathetic, over the top and all too common example of collusion between football clubs and the police.

Thought this was a spoof at first but it's real.  This is the ballot form Hull City are sending out to season ticket holders RE: the proposed name change to "Hull Tigers" - a name change that the FA already has already blocked.  Just a hint of sub-text in the wording, right?

You can read more about the situation at Hull - as well as an (excellent) response letter from a supporter to receiving the ballot form - here:  http://www.fsf.org.uk/blog/view/hull-city-fans-share-concerns-over-loaded-ballot

Ali Abbas and Tony Abbott: Racism in football and Australia

The AFC Champions League seems to bring out the “casual racist”. Last season, as the Central Coast Mariners played eventual champions Guangzhou Evergrande, there was a man sitting close to the Yellow Army (the small but passionate active section of the Mariner’s support) shouting out a particular profanity every time a Chinese player had the ball. “Fuck you, you Jackie Chan cunt.” I was floored, how could that be passable thing to say in any facet of Australian society? I shouted at him to sit down and be quiet (in language a little more colourful), I don’t know if he heard me, but he didn’t repeat it after about fifteen minutes into the game.

Yo - one of you guys chucked me a message the other day to let me know about a relevant article - I replied and that deleted the original message so can't remember who it was!  Let me know if it was you, cheers.

...The Stamford Bridge season ticket holder said: “The site was set up after talking to other fans about what terrible mark ups Viagogo make on true fans and how it'd be great to give fans a viable option to buy and sell their tickets at face value.
“It took up a couple of hours a day to maintain and we didn't make a penny out of the site. It was never our intention to, and we paid around £40 a month for hosting and our database package to securely hold our members information.
“We're hoping to start a petition against the club's use of Viagogo so we'll see where that gets us.
“Our dream would be for the club to adopt this form of ticket exchange.”
It has been a consistent complaint of Chelsea supporter groups for some years that the club chooses to engage the services of Viagogo as it's official secondary ticketing 'partner' – meaning unwanted tickets can officially only be re-sold via their website.
A ticket for Chelsea's coming home game against Stoke City is listed on Viagogo at the face value of £52.00.
However, on top of this, the buyer must pay Viagogo £18.24 for 'fees, handling and VAT' – cash not passed on to the seller.
Meanwhile, sellers are charged a 'seller service fee' amounting to 12% of the ticket value.
That means that on such a £52.00 ticket, Viagogo takes taxes and charges amounting to an additional £24.48, whereas cfctickets.com levelled no fees or charges whatsoever.
