Okay, so imma sound crazy, but, what if Trevor in Adventures was supposed to be the third dex holder, but like with the cancellation of Pokémon Z, it never happened. But Trevor did get the third starter (and maybe the third dex, I forget if he did or didn’t lol), and all of the dex holders have one of their regions starters. Also, what if his name is actually something that starts with a ‘Z’, and Trevor is just a nickname. I hope we get more conformation on this in a future SV or a Z-A ark.
XY2 (which were the actual planned Kalos games) may have introduced new protagonists if they were gonna be like BW2, so there was a good chance that Trevor was never meant to be the third Pokedex holder. But he had been promoted as a deuteragonist with the bait-and-switch of getting the starter and Dex, matching with Zygarde as the 'Watcher'/narrator of the arc and green color motif, and having the most obvious character arc among the friends. Think of him as XY Marvin except he got less flack since he isn't some random NPC.
Honestly I'd say the closest to the third Dexholder is actually Emma, given that she actually has caught Zygarde, Pokemas and SV DLC hints she will be important in ZA, and she may not have Delphox but she was still a part of Team Flare. Trevor may be important in ZA because of being the narrator, but Emma would get more focus since it's obvious that she will be important to the plot somehow.
