hi

- part art blog, part fictional evil wizard character analysis

- accidentally became an elden ring blog but I love a lot of other fantasy media

- my asks are open but keep in mind I’m a suffering grad student with very little free time

Quick question, I keep seeing tiktoks about college students doing this so I gotta ask

Personally I never pulled an all nighter when I was a student, I honestly thought it was a movie thing and not something students do.

I’ve seen a bunch of theories about the snow witch that hinge on the assumption that her name is Renna, but what if Renna was never actually supposed to be her name?

what we know about the snow witch, or snowy crone, is that she was a weird old lady in the woods who taught the young Ranni heretical cold sorcery, and wore the pointed hat and robe Ranni wears now. Ranni’s doll body is said to be “modeled after” her… but it cannot be a perfect 1:1 impersonation of her, because Ranni doesn’t look like a “crone” at all!

Rather than an attempt to fully impersonate the snow witch, I think Ranni’s doll body is more of an homage to her old mentor. and with that in mind, I think that the name “Renna” might also be an homage to perhaps the most important mentor in Ranni’s life — her mother.

I think it’s very fitting for Ranni to use her new persona as a way of maintaining her connection to her teachers after she slew her physical body and abandoned her previous life. though Ranni is accused of being cold and unfeeling, she’s actually very sentimental — her co-conspirators are her closest childhood companions, her base of operations her childhood home. she still loves her mother and defends both her body and her legacy. she died wearing her mother’s talisman. wouldn’t it be sweet if she chose to call herself Renna out of love for Rennala?

I think it’s also worth mentioning that the golden order is going to call people witches and heretics and crones as a way of demonizing these people for practicing magic or believing in things that doesn’t align with the order to discourage people from viewing them in a positive light and to associate ugliness and being unpleasant with the idea of heresy

Although this is also a cool idea I like it

I think there’s a lot of truth in these ideas, but in this specific scenario I’m pretty sure the snow witch being called “crone” in the item descriptions isn’t meant to demonize her, but is just a way of characterizing her as a mysterious old woman. when I say that Ranni’s doll body doesn’t look like a “crone,” I simply mean she has a young face, not the face of an old woman like her old mentor would have had. Venturing into the woods to seek occult wisdom from wise old crones is an age-old trope in countless fairy tales, and I think that’s what elden ring is drawing on here with Ranni’s search for new magical knowledge.

It’s also worth mentioning that the use of “witch” in elden ring doesn’t seem to necessarily be a negative term; for example, Miriel calls Rennala “the great and beautiful Full Moon Witch” while listing her greatest achievements.

That’s true but also I think that some of the item descriptions can be biased sometimes / might be telling all the information that is known but the information that is known is very intentional

And yeah that’s true they don’t usually use witch in a bad way in Elden ring so the renalla angle definitely makes more sense

while it’s true that item descriptions often introduce bias, I think it’s a stretch to assume that the snow witch item descriptions’ use of words like “heretical,” “witch,” and “crone” is meant to demonize her.

“Witch's pointed hat, frigid and frozen through. Of a style associated with practitioners of heretical sorcery. Strengthens cold sorcery. Once worn by the snowy crone who the young Ranni encountered deep in the woods. She was a witch, and well versed in cold sorceries. It is said that the doll that houses Ranni's soul was modeled after her. That old witch was Ranni's secret mentor.”

The use of the word “heretical” here does not strike me as a biased judgement on cold sorcerers, but rather a piece of information telling us that cold sorcery is considered a heretical art in this society. And as I said, I highly doubt the word “crone” is meant to be a demeaning word in this instance because it’s a classic fairy-tale way to describe strange and wise old women. I think it’s simply meant to characterize the snow witch as a witchy old woman who practices fringe magic, a mentor in Ranni’s life who provides a more mystical and occult influence. I think it’s a huge stretch to assume that the snow witch is only being called a “crone” to slander her and she’s actually a beautiful young woman.

It's also worth pointing out that the Finger Readers, who are supposedly aligned with the Golden Order, are also identified as crones in-game.

So yeah, I don't think there's any real reason to doubt that the witch was indeed a wise old woman, especially since it's likely the wider population of the Lands Between isn't aware of her existence or whereabouts, so there's no way or reason to slander her. She was explicitly Ranni's "secret mentor" after all.

What I do wonder though, is whether or not the crone actually had four arms or if it's merely a result of Ranni's doll body being modeled after the Raya Lucarian Marionette soldiers.

And if she did have four arms, that would make her less likely to have been human, and the only other creatures with four arms and a blueish complexion that I can think of are the Wraith Callers (who are found both in Liurnia and the Moonlight Altar now that I think about it...)

I’ve had my master’s degree regalia for months and it’s taken me this long to realize that Rennala’s robes are literally just a graduate student’s robe, hood, and stole????

I mean it does say that this robe is meant to represent “the highest order of sorcerer”…..
