Constant Death, Ceaseless Optimism

@grizzlythresher / grizzlythresher.tumblr.com

Owen, 25, Vaguely Human, I have no idea what I'm doing 90% of the time and that's just the way I like it. Sometimes. When I'm not panicking. Steam name same as here. Add me fuckos and let's do shit.

I love Hideo Kojima he makes multiple games where characters give long winded monologues (that he personally wrote) about how US entertainment media is designed to manufacture consent for the military, and then he'll spend 3 days gushing about Top Gun

Kojima is very anti war, but also he has like a little kid brain where he just loves military hardware and spies and soldiers and he especially loves big machines that go really fast and make huge kabooms, and I think it's the tension between these two parts of him that makes his art so deliciously insane

One of the lawyers currently prosecuting Alex Jones got interviewed on knowledge fight. He talked about how he had to watch 150+ hours of Infowars content as background for the case.

He talked about how he had to take regular breaks because he could feel himself passively absorbing information against his will.

I can't really articulate how validating that was to hear. Sometimes I worry that I'm being overdramatic when I say shit like "hey if you're not careful, even casually browsing some types of conspiracy media can fuck with your brain" but here was an actual lawyer talking about how it affected him.

It's not necessarily the content itself, but more how it's presented. (in my opinion) I think Infowars could be considered an actual cognitohazard.

Wait hang on I’ve got an idea for an AU/Season 2 Shenanigans

So we’ve talked before about how Izzy has serious Javert vibes, right? What if Stede pulls a full Jean Valjean—> Monsieur Madeleine thing.

By which I mean he’s changed his name and look because Stede Bonnet is supposed to be dead and he needs to lay kinda low, and then on his quest to get back to Ed runs into Izzy, who got kicked off the ship after a dramatic falling out with Ed (yeah, worse than the toe thing.) And then he runs into Stede and just….doesn’t recognize him. At all.

And in fact he meets Not-Stede right as he was pulling off a really clever scheme that impresses Izzy. Finally, it’s about time he met someone with a brain around here. Listen, my captain has gone off the deep end and is probably going to get himself killed, and I’m trying to get back to the ship and figure out how to fix things. I could use an ally who actually knows how to be a pirate.

Not-Stede is sweating furiously. Oh…of course, new comrade who I’ve never met before! I have no personal investment in this Blackbeard fellow you’re talking about! But he….sounds like a real swell guy and I’d definitely like to come along if you’re trying to catch up with his ship!

Occasionally they run into someone who knows them both and Stede is making desperate eye contact with them begging them to not out him to Izzy. He hasn’t tried to kill me in weeks! We’re actually working well together for once! Please don’t ruin this, at least until I find Ed!

Meanwhile Izzy is like ‘Not-Stede, you are the only motherfucker I respect around here. You kinda remind me of this other guy I knew, but he was a dumbass.’

I don’t know how he finally figures it out because nothing is funnier than Javert finally recognizing Valjean by his super hot big buff muscles.

@rompetrizas how does it feel having the biggest brain on his hellsite

I feel like this poll was inherently flawed in its design. Because I agree with the premise of his argument, but "Get paid your current salary" can mean WILDLY different things for different people, and 2x "current salary" can mean the difference between poverty and a moderately comfortable life for some people.

People horrifically fucking up facts about evolution and genetics too support their stupid beliefs or to seem smart and “rational” is probably one of my big pet peeves

Yeah. An enormous number of racists, misogynists, homophobes and transphobes I’ve met eventually whip out something about evolutionary biology and they never, ever, ever, ever have the slightest shadow of even a half-right idea what any of it means or ever cite a claim ever actually made by a scientific study.

Here’s a quick handy reference list or anyone who isn’t sure:

  • Homosexuality does exist in almost all social species.
  • “Alpha males” are not a real phenomenon and in fact the most aggressive males tend to be the least reproductively successful.
  • “Survival of the fittest” simply means that the success of a species hinges on how well it “fits” its environment. It does not mean that stronger or smarter individuals are supposed to succeed. Those things can even be a detriment in nature by wasting too many resources.
  • “Race” is not a biological concept. Someone who looks different from you has the same human genes, just a different grab-bag of dominant traits.
  • Evolution is not a march towards higher complexity, more intelligence or even more adaptability. It’s just a fluctuation of characteristics dictated by environmental pressures and mutation. A slime mold isn’t “less evolved” than a hawk, just adapted for success under different parameters.
  • People didn’t evolve “from apes.” It’s more complicated than that. We are a category of ape, sharing a common ancestor with the other apes.
  • No human on Earth is “closer” to an evolutionary ancestor than any other. We all descended from the same one.
  • Neanderthals were also a “sibling” species of ours. We didn’t evolve from them.
  • Some of us did, however, cross-breed with Neandethal man. It is exclusively non-African races, such as white people, who still carry hybrid human/Neanderthal genes. Whoops, sorry “white purity” skinheads, you’re actually mixed with a whole other species.

Some more stuff!

  • Humans are actually more genetically homogeneous than most people suspect. This is possibly due to a population bottleneck at some point in our evolutionary past. Two chimpanzees from different sides of a jungle are likely more genetically different to each other than any two human beings in the world.
  • Our big brains may help us use tools, but what was really principal in their development was the need for empathy, communication, and cooperation.
  • Humans. Are. Social. So social it drove an incredibly energetically costly increase in our brain size.  Don’t believe anyone who says its our nature to fight “every man for themself.” We’re humans, not bears. We fight for each other.
  • And we always have. Fossil remains are found of ancient humans who bore signs of crucial mobility impairments that lived to notable ages. Some even have sticks or other mobility aids – community care and support is our way. We don’t cast off those with impairments, we stand by them.
  • Human sexual dimorphism is on a decreasing trend. Our ancestors had greater difference in canine size and overall size. Our dimorphism gap has gotten smaller.
  • Occam’s razor is the principal that whatever is the simplest explanation is probably the most likely one. Don’t believe someone who says the reason we evolved bipedalism is so that males could carry gifts to females to woo them. Yes, this is a real ‘theory’ on how bipedalism evolved.
  • Skin tone is an adaptation of UV levels vs vitamin D levels. Both come from the sun. UV is harmful, so where sun is plentiful populations develop a darker skin tone for more protection. The skin needs sun to create vitamin D, so where sun is scarce, the skin tone lightens to allow more sun in. This is literally all it is.
  • Final thing: No one’s mind is really equipped to fully understand how long a billion years is, or a million, or even tens of thousands of years. Evolution takes place over a loooong time. Its very, very, slow, slower than we can really comprehend. We can’t “stand in the way” of natural selection by caring for our ill. We don’t need to “help” evolution in any way. It inevitably happens, but not on any sort of timescale we could possibly affect, so don’t fall for anyone that tells you not to “stand in the way” of natural selection. That’s fascism, and its utterly pseudo-scientific.
  • Not to mention natural selection doesn’t have a “will” that you can stand in the way of. Its not an entity with wants, its a millions-year long process. And its impossible for our decisions to “stand in its way.” Our decisions to care for one another are what brought our species where it is, plain and simple.

Evolution is literally genetic mutations that sometimes help with propagating our own genome. It’s just luck. Sometimes the mutation is helpful to the organism. Sometimes harmful. Sometimes neutral. It’s just random shit happening and if it was helpful enough ( to reproduction ) it becomes a widespread trait.

Just me crying in the bathroom so I don't wake my partners with this, fuck.

So to sum up: CT and DC have passed laws making it illegal to extradite someone to another state if they are being charged in that other state for crimes pertaining to abortion or trans health care, and makes it legal to sue and get your money back if you are targeted by a TX-style "bounty" law. DC also includes "crimes" of consensual adult sex, gay and interracial marriage and cohabitation and providing or using contraception.

This is, as the thread explains, basically legal interstate warfare. CT and DC's laws bar compliance with such laws.

This is, on one hand, kind of terrifying, because this is where we are now. It's going to get worse long before it gets better.

On the other hand... holy shit, someone fucking did something.

Someone fucking did something real.

Okay folx so... this kind of tags has been fairly common on this post.

I'm glad people are checking, but! If you didn't know, this is what it looks like now if you post a link to Twitter on Tumblr. And!

If you click/tap on the highlighted bit, it goes to the thread on Twitter, which contains screenshots of the amendment's text and a link to the full amendment text on the official CT.gov site.

Here are the screenshots of CT's amendment. The important stuff in the 2nd screenshot is what's underlined. There is too much text for alt text, it's on the link above, but the tl;dr is "it covers abortion and gender-affirming health care." It has been passed and signed by the Governor as detailed on the ct.gov link:

Here's a link to the press release when the DC bill was introduced from the Twitter thread linked above. Here is a link to an article about it. It appears that this is currently only proposed and not passed.

This is the text of the proposed DC legislation:

So yes, this is very very real, and Tumblr changed how they display Twitter links - the thread had all of this info in it except for the link to The Hill. :)

what you need to understand about recommending a show to me is that no matter how much we both know I'll like it, I can't watch it until the Neurodivergence Department in my brain approves it. I don't know when that will be, and I don't have any more control over it than you do.

So, nerds with shit in their pants are crying about this... and while the main source of their paint seems to be Natalie Portman's gunshow... it's also great to see that her Thor costume is essentially the same as Chris's... just with a little less detailing on the pectorials.

It really conveys strength and power and fortitude, without going out of the way to sexualize her (which isn't to say I haven't already seen many people attest that they have never seen Natalie look sexier). The armor was never super practical, but combined with the build it definitely creates the feeling of larger than life power.

What makes people claiming "this can't be possible, it must be CGI!" extra wholesome and hilarious is that Natlie already talked about getting swole for the role, and how she actually enjoyed it because she'd never gotten to do that kind of heavy lifting workout before, back in mid last month and had been observed being beefy in public.

In summary... bring on Love and Thunder!
