Just remember. There is no such thing as a fake geek girl. There are only fake geek boys. Science fiction was invented by a woman.

Specifically a teenage girl. You know, someone who would be a part of the demographic that some of these boys are violently rejecting.

Isaac Asimov.

yo mary shelley wrote frankenstein in 1818 and isaac asimov was born in 1920 so you kinda get my point

If you want to push it back even further Margaret Cavendish, the duchess of Newcastle (1623-1673) wrote The Blazing World in 1666, about a young woman who discovers a Utopian world that can only be accessed via the North Pole - oft credited as one of the first scifi novels

Women have always been at the forefront of literature, the first novel (what we would consider a novel in modern terms) was written by a woman (Lady Muraskai’s the Tale of Genji in the early 1000s) take your snide “Isaac Asimov” reblogs and stick it

even in terms of male scifi authors, asimov was predated by Jules Verne, HG Wells, George Orwell, you could have even cited Poe or Jonathan Swift has a case but Asimov?

PbbBFFTTBBBTBTTBBTBTTT so desperate to discredit the idea of Mary Shelly as the mother of modern science fiction you didn’t even do a frickin google search For Shame

And if you want to go back even further, the first named, identified author in history was Enheduanna of Akkad, a Sumerian high priestess.

Kinda funny, considering this Isaac Asimov quote on the subject:

Mary Shelley was the first to make use of a new finding of science which she advanced further to a logical extreme, and it is that which makes Frankenstein the first true science fiction story.

Even Isaac Asimov ain’t having none of your shit, not even posthumously.

You know what else was invented by women? Masked vigilantes, the precursor to the modern superhero. Baroness Emma Orczy wrote The Scarlet Pimpernel in 1905. The character would later inspire better known masked vigilantes such as Zorro and Batman.

the first extended prose piece - ie a novel, was not, as many male scholars will shout, Don Quixote (1605) but The Tale of Genji (1008) written by a woman

The first autobiography ever written in English is also attributed to a woman, The Book of Margery Kempe (1430s).

Hi, I'm 25 and debating starting male-to-female HRT. However, I'm scared that HRT won't help me at all. It seems like HRT does so little after puberty, especially by the time one gets in their 20s. I'm really scared that I'll just end up being someone in a male body, but with breasts. Is there anything you can say to someone having this fear? Thank you, and sorry, I suspect this is a silly question.

Actually, the claim that HRT doesn’t do much after puberty is a myth.  I started when I was 31 years old and now I’m 35. =)

It’s never too late to transition!

OMG!!! I love seeing posts like this. The hope it inspires. especially in girls like me, is unprecedented. Thank you!

Hope

I felt the same way before I started transitioning and especially because I have a fair masculine build. But you know what I’ve learned from my experience so far? Fuck it! There is always hope and you could end up surprising yourself with the results.

I think results vary, I don’t see much difference between pre-hrt and 8 years on hrt

Just adding another voice to the barrage: It. Is. Never. Too. Late!

The top two pictures are from 2011, age 32. The bottom three are from this yeah, 2016, age 37, and (almost) 2 years on hrt. Hrt is magic.

U.S. Copyright News, OTW Legal, and You

Fans need to stand up and be counted as opposing the new DMCA proposal from the U.S. Senate so that it doesn’t move forward in Congress.  Help OTW Legal protect AO3 and fan projects. Read more at https://otw.news/copyright-news-30129

If you are a US citizen, submit comments to Intellectual_Property@tillis.senate.gov before close of business on Friday, March 5th, 2021.

Do it in numbers, and if it moves forward as a bill, get ready to do it again with every congressional representative you have.

You know how a few people get bent out of shape because AO3 does a donation drive every year? Yeah. This is (one of countless reasons) why. So that they can go to bat for themselves and for us when legislation or court cases threaten fanworks and fandom.

And there’s all kinds of threats buried in both this specific document and Thom Tillis’s agenda that, even if these particular changes don’t immediately move forward to legislation, are not gonna die. Dude really wants to see copyright law turn into liability law, and that’s a fast track to censorship. He is a wholly owned subsidiary of massive entertainment conglomerates, and for him, the fact that helping those massive entities maintain effective monopolies means that they can exploit the cogs creators employed or contracted to make actual content to Dickensian levels and beyond is a feature, not a bug.

And he has a really interesting vision for the future of copyright in general. Specifically, he’d like to see it become a tiered system, delineated by maybe… oh, I dunno… market share?:

The law needs to account for the fact that small copyright owners and small online services providers (OSPs) may have more in common with each other than they do with big copyright owners and big OSPs, respectively. Accordingly, I think we should consider whether copyright law should be revised to account for such differences among stakeholders. In particular, could copyright law borrow from employment law, or other relevant fields, to establish different thresholds for copyright owners and OSPs of different size, market share, or other relevant metric?

The paternalistic posture here—“Oh, we just want to encourage solidarity among small creators; we want to make sure small platforms and providers aren’t getting crushed in the wheels of a one-size-fits-all system because we, the Senate Subcommittee on Intellectual Property, care very deeply about businesses that aren’t maxing out donations to our reelection campaigns every cycle”—is a smidge hard to take as good faith given absolutely everything about the history and implications of the changes Tillis wants to make. There could indeed be benefit to reexamining whether IP should be addressed in the same way for holders with effectively unlimited resources as it is for those with none—but Thom Tillis is 10,000% not the guy you want as the architect.

Fortunately, we’ve got way more brains on our side than the Senate Subcommittee on IP. But we all know that being right doesn’t always have shit to do with what gets ratified, so make sure your elected representatives know how unpopular these changes are among the #1 stakeholders in the debate: individual citizens trying to live in a fucking society.

In case you missed it upthread: submit comments about proposed DMCA changes to Intellectual_Property@tillis.senate.gov

And for when Sen. Tillis inevitably ignores those comments, since they don’t donate to his campaigns, donate to Democratic campaigns in Georgia’s fast-approaching runoff election to flip the Senate and have a better chance of killing this shit before it gets to the stage of a legal challenge in federal courts packed by the GOP or our newly goatfucked SCOTUS: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/pccc_2020_raphaelwarnock_jonossoff_only

On November 3, I’m having oral surgery that is going to cost nearly $5000 out of pocket. I tried to postpone the surgery so I could save some money, but the dentist insisted that it needs to be done immediately. I sought a second opinion and that dentist concurred. The money has to be paid before they’ll operate and we’re having to put the cost on credit cards because we simply don’t have it. It will max out one credit card and the other has a moderately high interest rate.

I feel like the lowest of the low asking this, but if you could possibly donate, I would be eternally grateful. I have three children and having to come out of pocket with $5k six weeks before Christmas is kind of a nightmare scenario. I’m terrified the kids are going to have a lousy Christmas, and it will be my fault. Every single dollar is going directly to the credit cards that are covering the cost, and is deeply, deeply appreciated. And if you DON’T want to donate (which is totally fair and I don’t blame you), would you please consider signal boosting this?

To the people who have donated, shared, or even just cared - Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart. You’re making a really tough situation just a bit easier. I love you all, and I promise to keep writing - no matter what.

i’ve been doing my homework on how to break into a writing career and honestly. there’s a Lot that i didn’t know about thats critical to a writing career in this day and age, and on the one hand, its understandable because we’re experiencing a massive cultural shift, but on the other hand, writers who do not have formal training in school or don’t have the connections to learn more via social osmosis end up extremely out of loop and working at a disadvantage.

like, i didnt know about twitter pitch parties!! i didnt know about literary agents and publishers tweeting their manuscript wishlist, in hopes that some poor soul out there has written the book they really want to read and publish!! this isnt some shit you learn about in school! you really need to know the ins and outs of the writing community to be successful!

for anyone interested, here’s what i’ve learned so far in my quest for more writing knowledge:

1. Writer’s Market 2019 is a great place to start– it gives you a list of magazines and journals that you can send your work to depending on the genre as well as lists a shit ton of literary agents that specify what genres they represent, how you can get in contact with them and how they accept query letters. this is a book that updates every year and tbh i only bought it this year so i dont know how critical it is to have an updated version

2. do your research. mostly on literary agents because if you listed on your site that you like to represent fluffy YA novels and some asshole sends you a 80k manuscript about like…gritty viking culture, you will be severely pissed off. always go in finding someone who you know will actually like your work because they’re the ones who will try to advocate for you in getting published.

3. learn how to write a query letter. there are slightly varying formulas to how you can write an effective query letter. you’re also going to want to get feedback on your query letter because its the first thing the literary agent will read and based on how well you do it, it could be the difference between them rejecting you outright and giving your manuscript a quick read

4. unfortunately, you’re gonna want to get a twitter. Twitter is where a lot of literary agents are nowadays, and they host things like twitter pitch parties, where you pitch your manuscript in a few sentences and hashtag it with #Pitmad #Pitdark, some version of pit. a lot of literary agents and publishers will ALSO post their manuscript wishlists, which is just the kind of books they’d like to represent/publish, and they hashtag this with #MSWL (it is NOT for writers to use, only for agents/publishers)

5. connect with other writers, literary agents, publishers at book events. you will absolutely need the connections if you want to get ahead as a writer. thats just kind of the state of the world.

Important info is important -.-

UPDATE: so i just got signed by an agent bc of twitter pitch parties. for any aspiring writers, you dont HAVE to go the twitter pitch party route, its just another way to get noticed a bit faster

Rebloging for my own benefit, but anyone else who wants to be a writer needs to know this too.

People will say that they’re all about respecting sa survivors until it comes to victims of incest. Will expand later.

Overall I’ve found that people, most likely subconsciously, don’t think that incest can be traumatic. When I told my therapist that I was sexually abused she was so supportive. She told me that it wasn’t my fault. That what happened doesn’t define me. That I can always tell her about this stuff without fear of judgment or rejection. That whatever happened, my trauma is valid. Then I told her that it was from someone in my family, and her tone switched immediately. All of a sudden it couldn’t have actually been that bad. What I was describing most be an overexaggeration. “It’s normal for families to show their love in different ways,” she said. “There most have been a miscommunication.” She didn’t listen to me anymore. I told her the worst of what happened in graphic detail, but none of that mattered. We were related. There’s no way that actually happened. And this is far from an isolated incident. I got blocked by one of my favorite cosplayers, one that was vocal about protecting minors and respecting triggers, for saying that incest survivors getting triggered by the twins, even if they are supposed to be satire or an act, is s valid reason to not watch ohshc. Both online and irl, people who vocally opposed to joking about sexual abuse would make incest jokes and even joke about my experiences explicitly. There’s a widespread belief in our society that incest is funny or not a real issue. And most activists not only refuse to acknowledge that this is an issue, but get upset when you try to educate them on it. This belief keeps getting spread, and it actively keeps us from being believed, from getting treatment, from getting justice. This belief keeps us silent and lets our abusers go free.

If you aren’t an incest survivor you are legally obligated to reblog this

God I’m so close to taking this post down. I’m convinced it’s done nothing to raise awareness or change anyone’s mind on anything. I talked about my deepest trauma on here and you know what I get? I get sent porn and gore in dms. I get death threats. I get people telling me how actually my abuse can be consensual. And does it make a difference? No. 90% of the people in the notes miss the point completely and either focus on my therapist or the last line. The last line is a figure of speech. I just wanted people to spread this. It wasn’t meant seriously. I’m sorry if I hurt anyone with it but please. Please just stop. I just wanted to change maybe one person’s view of incest survivors. Please just stop.

Avatar

Abuse is abuse. There is absolutely NO WAY that incest should be deciphered as "a different way of showing affection" and if the victim didn't want it, then it is NOT consensual! Everyone making jokes in the comments and trying to "explain" why it isn't abuse: Shame. On. You!
