mostly Sherlock. The New Semester my dreamwidth
Avatar

it's been almost a year since i posted this link, which means i probably haven't updoted any of the lists in the folder, and there may be some new meta writers that i haven't gotten around to including. But the idea is, here's a place to get started exploring series 4 meta (and yes, i still dream of doing earlier "semesters", but it gets harder when people leave fandom/tumblr).

My focus is more on reading the subtext, than trying to sort out "what really happened" in the surface story.

if i can figure out how to do it, i would love to make this a pinned post, since the clicky in my header stopped working last year.

ETA sept 2021, if google's new security measures interferes with the link, message me and i will see if i can get you in.

Sherlock Holmes is not actually cold and emotionless he is relentlessly passionate and loves his work and his life so much and anyone who tells you otherwise is a filthy liar. yes including Watson who he also loves

ok i caught up a little bit here, but the webinar i watched this evening about black sherlock holmes adaptations has me hankering to re read either the 221b baker towers stories, or apliddell's black lesbian johnlock stories. see you in the morning.

@sarahthecoat can you tell me more about this webinar?? It sounds super interesting

i realize now that i should have promoted it here, duh! it was offered through one of the several libraries whose email newsletter i get. one led to another to another, so many interesting webinars, some weeks i can't keep up. the presenter has done holmes related presentations before, she's very thorough, and very thoughtful.

ok, the library says I can share the link to the recording, which will only be up for a week. here's the copy-paste of the email, including also the links to the video clips that wouldn't play during the webinar due to bandwidth issues. @apliddell, @meledol84

Thank you for signing up for The Holmes You Never Knew with Groton Public Library. Below you will find a recording link along with several media links from Ann McClellan. The recording will remain active for seven days. Enjoy!

Neil,

Not that you would want to, but I was just curious. When the GO series is complete, would you be allowed to engage with fancontent without fear of legal recourse or reprisal?

Avatar

I guess. But that would also mean I could never again go back to Good Omens. So although things like Coraline are complete, I still don't read the fan fiction.

Why are there Infinity Loops or Möbius Strips in Good Omens?

The infinity loop, it's the idea of something that is unlimited and endless, you know...

In this post, I'm going to explore some of the symbols in the show that I think relate to this concept of eternity. For example, have you noticed that the infinity loop shows up amongst the symbols at the start of Season 1? While God's narrates about her "ineffable game" of her own devising, here it is on screen:

Why do we see so many infinity symbols here? Where else can we see this same symbol?

Read on for the places I've spotted it in both S1, S2 and the book. I’m hoping you’ll let me know if I missed any, and what you think it all means!

Crowley's belt is an ouroboros, the snake's head eating it's tail, and the Leviathan is said to wrap around the world, so it also acts as one. Crowley is very deeply tied into the outcome of this story (no surprise there!)

@meledol84, @apliddell, till I hear from the library that it's ok to share the link more widely, I'd like to just send it to your messages, but tumblr isn't letting me do that? It's only up for a week so hoping I can get it to you before the end of the day. Otherwise if I do hear from the library that they don't mind, I'll reblog again with the link.

So earlier in art class today, someone drew a characters hands in their pockets and mentioned that hands are really like the ultimate end boss of art, and most of us wholeheartedly agreed. So then, our teacher went ahead and free handed like a handful of hands on the board, earning a woah from a couple of students. So the one from earlier mentioned how it barely took the teacher ten seconds to do what I can’t do in three hours. And you know what he responded?

“It didn’t take me ten seconds, it took me forty years.”

And you know, that stuck with me somehow. Because yeah. Drawing a hand didn’t take him fourth years. But learning and practicing to draw a hand in ten seconds did. And I think there’s something to learn there but it’s so warm and my brain is fried so I can’t formulate the actual morale of the lesson.

Saying "I'm not going to draw this thing because I don't know how to draw this thing" is really shooting yourself in the foot, because you've now cut yourself off from an opportunity to grow.

I had a friend in college who was an absolutely amazing artist. I loved seeing his work! One time I said something to the effect of "I could never do that."

He told me something that, as an artist, I resonate with. He said art isn't about natural talent; it's a learned skill. When you tell an artist their level of skill is impossible for you to reach, you're assuming their level of skill is a natural gifting they have, and it discredits the hundreds to thousands of hours of hard work they've put into getting where they are today, and you're cutting yourself off from trying to reach that point yourself.

Not saying the internet isnt gonna get funky in the future, but i'm in the uk, and the various postal regs have been getting insidiously worse since brexit? So if u want the zines, i'd suggest probably get them while i have them still.
