Something I've been thinking about lately is the shame around writing slowly, and how prevalent it is for people to be upset about not being able to write a lot really quickly. About how so much of writing advice is "how to write more faster," and how many people seeking advice are asking how to write a thousand words a day, and how big of an annual thing NaNoWriMo is because it's difficult but there's this general vibe of condescension for those who don't participate or who don't "win."
And I used to feel ashamed too. I'd get frustrated by my apparent inability to write more than a few hundred words in a sitting on a good day. I'd beat myself up for only managing my bare minimum of fifty words, I'd try again and again at NaNoWriMo and hate myself for not being able to do it.
But I've realized that if I didn't write slowly, my stories wouldn't be what they are. I wouldn't love them so much, because they wouldn't have become what they did - because they had time to bloom.
And I've also realized that while I have had moments in time where I wrote like that - multiple thousands of words a day for days or weeks on end - that's... not something I aspire to.
I write slow! That's okay!
I'm proud of writing slow. I'm proud of having gotten to the point where I put myself and my process before what others expect of me.
You don't need to be fast. You don't need to be ashamed.
And you don't need to want to be fast, either.

Same tbh. The way people construct writing and their identity as writers on this webbed site is kind of baffling and alien to me tbh.
I do also wonder how many of them actually enjoy writing - I remember putting a lot of effort into my drawing/painting and finding it so frustrating every step of the way and then I stopped and thought. Wait. Writing is never so painfully frustrating to me. Sure there are blocks and holdups but it never feels like pulling out teeth the way this does. And then I realized that writing is my thing and visual art isn't. I enjoy looking at art but I don't enjoy the process of creating it. I don't get excited about the techniques or the details of it, I don't like experimenting and figuring out the optimal way of conveying something, I just like seeing a finished product I relate to. And the way a lot of people talk about writing sounds like that to me, and I can't help but wonder if they enjoy the process of writing at all, or if they're just after the next serotonin hit when people leave kudos on their fanfic or OC or whatever.
And then I wonder if these people haven't built so much of online writing culture that even if you DO want to write and connect to other people who do you're immediately met with this... just lie back and think of England attitude to it, just grit your teeth and try to get through it as fast as possible, that it kind of... triggers the hypercompetitive productivity worship grindset that life instills in us even in people who WOULD otherwise enjoy it.
Like it's a hobby. Why do you do something as a hobby if it makes you miserable 90% of the time? Do something else! Find a more productive way of expressing yourself! You nerdy types always give me shit for being sporty because "why would I do something that's painful and exhausting", apply your own advice ffs!

Like I'll reblog memes about being frustrated from being stuck, but being stuck is part of the fun for me. I wouldn't like writing so much if I didn't get the satisfaction of finally figuring out a scene that's been giving me hell, just like I wouldn't like puzzle games so much if I didn't get a rush from finally getting it right!!
And I feel like the majority of the community isn't actually hating writing while they do it (exaggeration as comedy is absolutely at play) but the overall guilty and frustrated energy around writing online (and persevering/having a "grindset" in general) certainly doesn't help if someone finds the process god-awful (some people would benefit from quitting!! and it doesn't need to be framed as a negative!!).
In recent years we've gotten a lot better as a community about recognizing that everyone's process is different and respecting that, thankfully, but I never see celebration of the things we used to outright say are "bad" like speed, quitting something, switching between projects, perpetual WIPs, etc. Which I'm happy to help provide, but I have to find the words for all that first. And I shouldn't be the only one.
As this years' event slowly comes to an end, we are now searching for a brave soul or two who would wish to join our team. We're particularly interested in someone who is able to share their perspective as an art creator so that we can make our event even more artist-friendly and continue to ensure that all the creators' needs (both artists and writers) are met as we prepare for the 2024 edition.

It was a bright summer day and the sun speckled the undergrowth of the forest with gold, as if someone scattered countless coins across it. A small smile curved up Thorin’s lips at the recollection of that very profitable agreement with the Elves and the role his clever wife played in hammering it out a couple of years ago. Anila… Ah, his sweet Anila and her talent of finding useful information in ancient tomes and musty treaties. Then, her cunning negotiation tactics side-blinded the Sylvan negotiator, driving every single clause home. The precedent she found—dating five hundred years ago—was instrumental in cornering the Elves and making them agree to their conditions. There was nothing better than the taste of flawless victory… especially if followed by a private but intense celebration that took place in his marital bed.

“Aye, aye, it all sounds very reasonable, but you forget about one thing, brother dear,” she reached into the basket and then placed an object in his hand. “Children.”
Thorin looked down at this curious offering, ignoring the raised voices around him: it was a tiny boot in dire need of mending. A boot that belonged to a little pebble who had to bear the hardships of their life as much as its parents did, and this piece of footwear was the best proof of it. And then a new image appeared in his mind, Mila with a babe in her arms, a little boy, laughing at something, giving the little one a peck on his cheek, while he wiggled in her arms, one of his tiny feet bare, and his hair... not as golden as Mila’s, but as dark as his. Thorin swallowed.

She kept on waiting.
First, she counted the days until their next meeting, after the handsome Captain of Gondor appeared at her cottage at the edge of the forest for the first time.
Then, he started visiting her more often—as often as he could—galloping on his horse to her, leaving the White City and his worries behind. Sometimes, they would spend an evening at the nearby brook, looking at the stars, sometimes she would invite him in for a light meal, and sometimes they would walk the woods in search of the best blackberry bushes, or to that little glade she liked so much. And they would talk—about everything and anything. Boromir’s hand would brush against hers, as if by accident, and when she would look up, her skin tingling, his warm gaze would rest on her face and then slowly slide down to her lips… And then words would die on his lips, and he would look away.
On the brink of the summer, she waited for the great feast on the King’s Day, and when the day finally came, she rode to Minas Tirith in her best gown, to take part in the festivities. There was music and song in the air, the wine was sweet, and Boromir made her heart flutter, cutting a strapping figure in his tunic adorned with the emblem of the White Tree. They danced the night away, and then he led her to the highest level of the city where the view took her breath away. The view—and the kiss that came shortly after, tender and gentle. Boromir held her in his arms until the first rays of the morning sun painted the white walls of the city pink. Since that night, his murmured words of devotion, of his feelings for her, rang in her ears every evening when she put her head on her pillow.

Help I'm having thoughts about Thorin being all soft and indulgent with his personal raven like a stern dad with the puppy he said he didn't want that he lets do whatever it wants.
Just letting it look at what he's holding and feeding it from his plate and letting it grab his finger in its beak and wiggling it from side to side like he's playing tug with it. Letting it preen him and stroking its head.
