Ladies, a new bakery wants to sell you period brownies

A new Olympia, Washington-based bakery hopes to capitalize on the idea of scarfing baked goods during a lady’s time of the month. Following a successful Kickstarter, New Agey Moon Cycle Bakery will launch sign-ups December 15.

Women can enroll in the subscription service and, using an app that’s the “first-ever period tracker with an e-commerce element,”pick up treats like Matcha Coconut Bites and Raspberry Black Bean Brownies with Primrose.

I would argue, however, that all brownies are period brownies if you eat an entire tray of them.

The Moon Cycle treats contain ingredients like gamma-linolenic acid and magnesium, which the bakery claims ameliorate PMS symptoms and replace necessary nutrients. (I usually just slather my brownies in peanut butter and call it a day, but I’m open to gamma-linolenic acid, I guess.)

The idea of period brownies taps into the oh-so-2017 confluence of feminism, the “self-care” buzzword, and the Amanda Chantal Bacon wellness set. Moon Cycle’s website is sprinkled with affirmations, cosmic metaphors, and references to “the moon dust that lives inside of your bones.” I do notice a surprising lack of crystals, however.

This would all be easy to mock if 2017 wasn’t just a shit year for women, generally. If matcha/ginger/fairy dust-infused brownies are any kind of a balm for ladies, I say more power to them. With prices starting at $15 for one Moon Cycle treat, though, I’ll stick with my Betty Crocker box.

Period Panties - Invention of the Century

The brands I have used:

  • THINX
  • Lunapads
  • Icon (these are actually incontinence panties but I love them for bleeding too!)

First of all: for those who don't know what period panties are. Period panties are pairs of underwear menstruators can use during their period. They come in different sizes and forms and some can hold up to 3 tampons worth of blood. The panties have an inserted layer that functions as an absorbent pad. So when wearing period panties, one doesn't have to wear a pad, tampon or menstrual cup, but one can bleed freely in their panties (: Yay for safe freebleeding! My experiences:

I have tried numerous ways and brands of menstrual products. I started with disposable pads, then tampons (first with and then without applicator), then a menstrual cup, reusable pads and eventually I also tried period panties. My faves? Period panties and reusable pads on heavy days, my cup on lighter days (and then I wear a period panty for lighter days, JUST in case I leak (which doesn't often happen, but sometimes it does  - the freedom of not having to worry about leaking because my underwear is super-underwear that absorbs leaking feels awesome!)

Questions I often get:

Leaks! How does it work? Are you sure I won't leak? Well. The same as with other menstrual products. As long as you change your panties regularly, you usually won't leak. The panties come in different sizes and absorbency so you can adapt the panty to your flow, just like with other menstrual products. I only have leaked when I wore a panty too long.

Isn't it gross to feel the wet blood all the time?

The panties are absorbent so you won't feel the blood -- unless you wear them too long. I personally feel comfortable and 'dry'. It also depends on your flow. I usually use 3 to 4 pairs on a heavy day, and 1-3 pairs on lighter days. But I do adapt my panty to my flow -- so I use panties for lighter days on my lighter days, and the ones that have greater absorbency on my heavier days.

How to wash them?

Different brands come with different washing instructions. It is smart, however, to rinse the panties immediately after wearing (if possible).

How I respond to the changes in my menstrual cycle #followerstory

Since becoming more aware and taking more interest in my cycle, I've noticed how my body changes through each of the stages of my cycle and in turn how I should respond to those changes eg. diet, meditation, journaling etc..

Usually in my ovulatory and luteal phase, socially i tend to be more reserved or withdraw because i'm focusing more inward (Hope that makes sense) so as a result this is the time where i will spend more time journaling about  any ideas or thoughts from the month so far or the current time and meditating to ensure that i'm responding to my needs (moving inward reflection ect.) in those phases. I will also journal or meditate at this time to breakdown my emotions/ feeling to identify their cause and if they're having a positive or negative effect.

In terms of diet at these times i ensure that i'm adequately hydrated and make sure that i'm eating at regular intervals because i feel like if i'm hungry around this time it can cause an emotional upset ( i'm still playing around and adjusting my diet in response to my cycle so that's really the extent of my diet changes atm).

So for my menstrual phase, I usually make an effort to take things a bit slowly and make sure that i'm understanding if i feel a bit tired or need to rest. So i guess really nurturing and listening to my body and taking care of it by ensuring that i'm eating cleanly and up my iron intake slightly, that i'm well hydrated (if i'm not i tend to get cramps) and plenty of rest. I

I haven't figured out my follicular phase because at that time i seem to be really outgoing so i just usually go with the flow but i'm learning to pay more attention to myself during this time even though i don't feel like i need it.
