Adulting 101

I’m going to start posting a weekly blurb called “Adulting 101″. Basically a list of 10 things that I have learned since I started living on my own, the list changing every week. I’m also going to @ two of you lovely followers each week because I see ya’ll reblogging everything I post and ya’ll make me feel special.

Today big shout out to @lifehacksthatwork and @b1polar-thoughts. Please go love them! And without further ado…

1. Important documents. One of the first things you should do before you move out is get all your important documents from your parents/guardians. I’m talking your Social Security Card, Birth Certificate, high school or college transcripts, banking information, etc. Trust me.

2. Get a store discount card. I save an average of $20 per $100 shop at Stop & Shop and as of today I’ve saved $125 at CVS.

3. Buy herbs. Herbs like basil, rosemary, and thyme are very easy to maintain and yield a big bang for their buck. They are cheap, hardy and easy to cook with!

4. Wash those sheets. Wash your sheets once a week (if you can afford it), it will really make a difference in your skin care.

5. Help your bathroom. Always, always, always leave your door or window open after you shower. Black mold is no joke and is easily preventable but not easy to eliminate. I leave my bathroom window open in the summer and my door open in the winter.

6. Freeze everything. I buy in bulk, separate into meal portions, and then defrost as needed. Waste not, want not! I do this with loaves of bread, cookies, meat, etc.

7. Buy xmas lights. I have xmas lights strung up year round, they’re cheap and really brighten my apartment up. 

8. Have pet, will lint roller. If you have a pet, get a lint roller. Seriously. There’s nothing worse than going to an important interview or event and realizing that you look like your cat’s mutated half-human sister.

9. Posters are cheap, frames are expensive. Frames are sometimes three times the price of the poster! And what’s worse is that the cheaper frames fall apart almost instantly and look terrible. 

10. Late night worries. If you’re out late at night worried about your safety use an app to share your location with a friend. Those with Iphones can actually just “share my location” on a friend’s contact page or use “Find My Friends”. It This is something I do all the time.

4.14.17 // Self Care Friday

I got new washi tape today and stickers earlier this week! Today I did a face mask, played animal crossing, and did some journaling! (Plus I went to class and did some dishes so that was productive)

here’s a little tutorial on my fav font:

  1. firstly, draw out the word that you are intending to write. be as creative as possible!! 
  2. on the left sides of the downward strokes, add line(s) to thicken!! vary the thickness, as according to your preference!! i tend to do bout 2-3 strokes, but you can thicken them as much as you want!!
  3. outline the word!! (this step is optional!!!)
  4. add another dimension/ line on the left sides of the downward strokes to create depth/ 3-D effect!!
  5. (this step is optional too!!) add stripes to create a darker undertone/ shadow effect!!
  6. have fun!!

Sometimes the hardest part of an exam or assignment isn’t the writing itself or having sufficient knowledge about the topic, it’s understanding the question.

Components of a question Most questions will have the following components which you can identify to understand it

  1. Subject - the main idea of the question
  2. Focus - the context you consider the subject
  3. Aspect - the angle the subject will be looked at
  4. Instruction - the demands of the question

Deconstructing the question Knowing the components of the question, understanding it is the simple matter of identifying each part within your given question and taking note of any important features.

  1. Identify the subject and its focus.
  2. Take note of any restrictions or expansions dictated by the question e.g: time period, location, etc.
  3. Search for the aspect. Generally, it is a noun followed by ‘of’ ,‘for’, etc. 
  4. Determine the instructions, or command terms of the question. This is usually its first word/s.
  5. Check if it asks for a specific point of view to tackle.

Let’s take a look at an example taken from a past IB World History exam:

Having identified each component of the question, there is no doubt as to what the content of the essay will be. 

  1. Subject - foreign involvement
  2. Focus - two civil wars
  3. Aspect - reasons for and impact of (Note that this question has two aspects. For top marks, you will need to consider both the reasons for and the impact of foreign involvement!! Only considering one will likely lose you big marks!)
  4. Instruction - compare and contrast these aspects, identifying similarities and differences.

Having deconstructed the question, you can fully understand what it is demanding of you and its implications. Answering it now becomes easy so long as you are sufficiently prepared!

To grasp exactly what the question is asking of you, you may need to know the definition of several instruction terms. These may be set officially by the course you are studying, but they are generally the same across the board! Here are some extra resources for understanding what an instruction term actually means:
