“Persephone climbed into her husband’s lap as if it were her throne, as if she never sat anywhere else. Hades, stiff and frightening to eyes of others, let the flower goddess run her fingers through his hair like any love drunk young man tasting the nectar of a woman’s love for the first time. To the world he was an unyielding and merciless king, but for her he was vulnerable and tender.”

Penny Marshall b. October 15, 1943 - d. December 17, 2018

Penny Marshall was an American born actress, director and producer. She began her acting career in her 20s after she divorced her first husband and moved to L.A. to be closer to her brother, producer, director, writer and actor Gary Marshall.

Marshall worked mostly in TV and became famous playing Laverne DeFazio on Laverne & Shirley, a spin off of Happy Days (both shows were created by her brother).

She made her theatrical debut in 1986 with Jumpin’ Jack Flash, starring Whoopi Goldberg. The film was a moderate success and led to her next directing project, Big, which starred Tom Hanks. It was the first film directed by a woman to break the $100 million dollar mark and for several decades held the record for the highest grossing film directed by a woman.

Marshall continued to have a successful career as a director throughout the ‘90s continuing to work exclusively with major studios producing her films. She made the 1990 film Awakenings, which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture, the 1992 baseball film A League of Their Own (which again grossed over $100 million dollars), the 1994 comedy Renaissance Man and the 1996 film The Preacher’s Wife which starred Whitney Houston.

Her final film as director, an adaptation of Riding in Cars with Boys, came out in 2001.

In 2014 Marshall announced she was working on a film entitled Effa, a biopic on civil rights activist and baseball pioneer Effa Manley. The film was never completed.

On December 17, 2018 it was announced that Marshall had died due to complications with diabetes.
