A PSA from me about Fanfic on GoodReads
Alright guys, I don’t normally make these posts so I have to apologise - feel free to scroll right on if this isn’t for you - however, twice in the last three months I’ve had to have my Fanfic works removed from Goodreads where they were being actively compared to published works.
Now, I appreciate that this doesn’t sound like a big deal and that actively going and getting myself/my works removed is a little bit OTT - and maybe it is. But - and here’s the thing - I don’t agree with works being put on there without an author’s express permission, and this is why.
1. The Works Aren’t Published
Alright, so I know what you’re thinking. “Yes, T, this is self-explanatory, you posted the fic on AO3.” Yes, yes I did. Now, my beta reader and any number of my amazing cheer readers have gone through that thing, as I have, but actually, none of us are professional editors. Why does that matter? Well, would you compare a meal made at home with a dish prepared at a Michelin starred restaurant? Probably not? Why is that?
I’ll tell you why - it’s because they’re in different leagues.
You know what else is in two different leagues? Fanfiction and published works.
And really, I get it - a lot of fan fiction authors are published authors, but the process those works go through compared to the process the average fic goes through is a completely different beast. Sometimes we bash out a fan fiction in a week because we were all excited by a specific idea of head canon. Any published work is likely to have gone through multiple rounds of editing and proofreading and it’s a process that takes months if not years.
As such, pitting a fanwork against a published work on a site like Goodreads just isn’t a fair comparison. They’re tropey. They’re cliche. They’re sunshine and rainbows or untamed angst or whatever - regardless, rating them on a scale of 1-5 against works of an entirely different type is an unfair comparison - and make no mistake, every crappy rating or review makes an author think about giving up.
2. There is literally a comment function on AO3
It’s literally there right at the bottom of any fic chapter you read, guys. If you have something to say, maybe say it there instead? Don’t want to? Maybe examine why that is - if it’s because it’s mean and potentially hurtful, there’s a good chance that perhaps, you shouldn’t say it at all.
Take Grandma’s advice - “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”
Why not?
Guys, people post this for free. Aside using a library service or lending, there’s literally no other (legal) way to get any sort of written content without paying. Why do people offer all this time and talent for no financial recompense? It’s because it’s fun and they love what they do.
Make it not being fun by being mean and it’ll stop. Trust me, I’ve seen authors delete their entire accounts for less.
And really, if you find yourself reading a fic you don’t like, there’s a little cross at the corner of your screen. Use it. Leave the fic. It won’t matter to anyone but you.
3. Those works were posted in fannish spaces - maybe the author wanted them to stay there
I know several people within fandom who are amazingly talented who like to keep their identity on the down-low. Admittedly, I’m not as careful as I once was as generally I’m proud of my writing and a lot of my nearest and dearest IRL know I do it anyway.
But you know what? I still don’t necessarily need them reading it.
It’s why I post in specifically fannish spaces (Like AO3 and Tumblr) and keep it separate from my real life. Needless to say, putting it on GR starts to blur those lines and the first time this happened to me, it made me completely uncomfortable.
I gave my consent to post the works in the spaces I chose. I did not give my consent for them to be shared elsewhere. It’s an etiquette thing and a grey area - I get that, but this is how I feel on it.
4. You don’t have permission to share it
Very linked to the point above, but if an author hasn’t added their works themselves maybe reach out (either by comments, Tumblr, twitter, discord… whatever) and see if they’re cool with you adding it. Most authors and fandom peeps I’ve spoken to are amazingly chill, and hey! You might make a new friend. Online friendships are real friendships too!
5. A lot of the time when this happens, art that accompanied the fic is used to promo
Alright, so, did you have the artists permission if you’re loading these to GR in this way? If not, on a real note, you might be opening yourself up to copyright issues. Now I don’t really understand the art world as well as I maybe should, but this seems pretty basic to me - and again, they are NOT free source stock images.
When we post images within a fic, or add a title banner, we usually get sent a very specific file so that the quality is maintained and the artist’s work is displayed as they intended. It’s a consent thing, and it’s a respect thing.
“So, uh, T - how do I go about reccing fics I liked? That’s how I was using Goodreads!”
Honestly, start a Tumblr rec list. A nice easy how to make a rec list post is RIGHT HERE. But again, when reccing, remember that there’s every chance the author will see it. Let’s try and keep it positive, eh?
“Cool, cool… but I do a Goodreads reading challenge every year and your fics are long and I want to add them”
I do a Goodreads reading challenge every year too, but I keep it to books. Why not reduce your number a tad and keep my fanfic out of it? Please? For the love of all things good?
And really guys, I totally get it. This probably isn’t done in malice, but it’s just bad etiquette. A comprehensive and less ramble-y post about it is available HERE .
Anyway. If anyone’s been affected as an author, you have two options. One is detailed in the linked post above, and that’s to take ownership of your author page on AO3. But if like me you don’t want to do that and encourage this, click the break and I’ll put a photo step-by-step of what to do to get it taken down.
I’ve had to do this twice and I can only say that the GR help team are amazing - so thank you guys.

This is, of course, the worst plan that he has ever had. Soldat would never have permitted it. The Handlers would never have permitted it. The Soldier isn’t even sure if he’s still Omega enough, doesn’t know what they actually did to him when he was HYDRA’s asset - he may not possess all of the prerequisite parts to be a ‘real’ Omega anymore, but he knows that he was one once. It was in the half-file he stole on himself, after all.
It’s also another puzzle piece that suggests that he once could have been The Bucky - after all, The Bucky was the Omega of Steve Rogers. But the time for analyzing that is not now.
He has to acquire the necessary items for his risky plan.
And he has to go through with that plan, consequences be damned.

Bucky Barnes is an ex-professional ballet dancer now running his own dance school. He's kind, compassionate and clearly cares about the kids in his class and their dreams and goals - most of which involve getting to the stage where they can dance en pointe. Steve Rogers is a perfectionist and owns En Pointe, the dance wear store nearest to Bucky's dance studio. It's almost like a right of passage when the kids in Bucky's class get to visit the store, not only because they finally get their pointe shoes, but because they get to see the infamous squabbling between Mr Barnes and Mr Rogers who clearly rub each other up the wrong way.... but is everything as it seems?
