The library was rather empty. Not that Beth minded. It gave her time to sort and straighten things. Stacks of books to put away. On a table she saw someone had gone through so many books about ancient Egypt. With the museum starting a brand new exhibit, it didn’t surprise her. After they were back on the shelves, she went to pick up a few newer volumes that needed to be shelved. Of course there was a few new books about Egypt. Perhaps the scholar would return today?

Raising her brows slightly, she almost laughed. He was so unsure all the time. What had happened to make him that way? Leaning closer, she took his hand. “Of course I want you to come over again, Steven,” she murmured. “I thought I made it clear that I… I like you. I want to spend more time with you, if you’ll let me.”

Steven was taken back from her laughing, which caused him to panic a bit, and having her hold his hand wasn’t helping his heart come down. “Just wanted to make sure, not used to people wanting to hang out with me or wanting to see me again.” He said to her. “But I wouldn’t mind seeing you again.”

“Of course I want to see you.” Something about him was stirring her protective and romantic sides. Slowly she moved closed and kissed his cheek. “And you better get used to me wanting to spend time with you, Steven. Cause I really like you.”

Things weren’t so slow since the Blip had been reversed. So many people needed help. Some days the library was packed. Beth did like those days. It was better than the eerie quiet for five years.

Looking at the man who entered, she blinked and tried to place him. He did look familiar. “Can I help you?” Beth asked, smiling at him. How did she know him?

At least he smiled and laughed. It oddly made her feel less like an idiot. Grinning, she blushed, laughing softly. “Bucky then. Okay, sorry, back to finding books. I swear I know what I’m doing.”

Beth was glad he was carrying the books now. He clearly was stronger. And if she kept trying to carry a stack of books for a super soldier, she’d end up tripping and looking like even more of a dope. “Yeah, a library card,” she answered. “Unless you had one before the war and it’s still active. But I don’t think there would be one active that long. The whole system is different now.” She flushed hot again. “Yeah, I’m babbling again, sorry. I doubt you have an active account, so yeah, we’ll get you set up with one. And then you can access stuff online, ya know, ebooks and stuff. Do you like those? Or do you prefer the hard copies?” Her hand trailed over the spines on the shelves. “I kind of like physical copies. There’s something about the smell of old books and just turning the page that helps me get lost in the story.”

Thing's had certainly changed.

After the monumental fight against Thanos, Barnes’ biggest friend, Steve Rogers, had gone back in time to bring back artifacts and had decided he wanted to spend the rest of his life with his love and had stayed back in time. Bucky had accepted the fact that his friend was now gone and had been trying to return back to a normal life.

While James had time to learn about how the new world worked, he was still at times shocked at what had changed. Lingo, technology, even just the people. Instead of using the internet (something that still partially boggled his mind) he'd decided to visit the local library. Stepping through the doors at the entrance, his black boots pounded into the carpet flooring as the smell of musty leather and decaying paper flooded his nostrils.

His thirst for knowledge allowed him to venture practically anywhere inside the building, finally settling down on the history setting. Hundreds of books were scanned by his blue hues as he tried to settle on one. His focus on reading the titles was interrupted by a woman, somebody who he didn't recognize. He assumed she was the librarian. He glanced over from her back to the books and started to speak.

“Yeah, I'm just looking for something that's interesting. Got any suggestions?”

His almost casual tone caught her by surprise. He didn’t seem like someone who was random about anything. When someone came to the library, they usually had a plan, something specific. This man just asking for something interesting was not what she was used to.

“Something interesting… you looking for a classic? Something new? Fiction?” Looking up, she saw that he was close to the historical fiction area. “I’m guessing you like something that’s got a rich story, lots of detail, something that you can get swept away in? Past, present, or future?”

Granted, Bucky typically did know what he needed to do. He'd enlisted into the military as soon as possible and had made his way up the branch pretty fast. He'd joined the howling commandos as soon as Steve had formed the group. It was just… After having his life controlled for so long, it took a bit to get used to having free will. Another one of the quirks of his life.

Assuming she was the librarian (I mean, who would come up to you asking if you needed help unless they worked there?) He presumed she'd give him a good recommendation. Of course, he needed to give her a bit more information to get said recommendation.

“Well… I know history isn't that interesting but, really anything more modern would work. Let's just say I haven't read in a bit.”

Yeah, that familiar face to her hadn't been identified yet which made sense. He'd cut his hair, grown a decent amount of stubble and was currently wearing a long sleeve shirt which hid his arm. The only sign of something beyond the average Joe was his hand.

“Oh history can be fascinating,” she countered, gesturing for him to follow her. “If you know where to look. Or I guess I should say when to look.” Laughing at her silly joke, she led him towards the section of new releases. Suddenly she paused. There was an odd soft mechanical sound. Something she had never heard in the library before.

“Okay, so you’re wanting to do a lot of catching up. So maybe a little bit of everything?”

She stopped at a shelf and pulled a novel out. “Here, this one I’ve heard great things about. And… oh! Here, it’s called ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’. I keep meaning to read it but I’ve heard people really like it.”

He followed along after the girl, his eyes still scanning over the titles as they walked. She knew the lay of the land significantly more than he did so she was his guide throughout the jungle of bookcases. It reminded him of the one in his youth, something much tinier but still had all the knowledge this one did. He'd visited it on the occasion he actually had freetime and wanted to go read instead of playing sports with the other kids.

“Yeah, history was never my suite. I was never the biggest learner in school.”

He paused when she did, the same familiar sound hitting his ears. Didn't sound like it belonged in a library but he knew what it was from. No words were spoken from his lips about the noise and he hoped she wouldn't say anything.

“Bit of everything sounds good.”

When she had taken the book off the shelf and had shown him it, Bucky had reached out to grab the book which had made his arm a bit more present as it was the one he used to grab it. Didn't look too big which worked in his favor. Sure, he had all the time in the world to read but did he wanna spend all his time doing that? No, he didn't. He had therapy and stuff he still needed to attend.

“Bit of everything, okay.”

She motioned for him to follow her around, weaving through the shelves. This was what she loved about her job. This was why she did this. To help people build knowledge, to find the stories that called to them and made the world a better place.

Gathering a small stack of books, she handed them to him. That was when she saw his hand. It was grey… was that metal? Everything clicked in that moment. That’s who he was! Smacking herself on the forehead, she chuckled. “Sorry, sorry I’m a dope. Sorry, Sergeant Barnes.” His name and title had been on the news a lot after he and the new Captain America had stopped the Flag Smashers. “I’ve been wracking my brain for the last five minutes.”

my favorite parts of She Hulk ep 1:

  • "captain america was a virgin" *car crash*
  • girls at the bar willing to kill for Jennifer despite not knowing her at all
  • reference to Natasha
  • Tony and Bruce being best buddies ;)
  • Bruce and Jennifer having a pretty realistic familial relationship, not just "I love you, cousin :)"
  • Titania's character design

The way his cheeks pinked up, the light in his eyes that she almost missed… he was adorable. Reaching over, she took his hand. “I’d like that too, Steven.” Then she smiled warmly. “Now, eat up. I don’t want your food to get cold now. Someone might think I’m not good to you.”

Steven chuckled at her words as he squeezed her hands before he started eating the food she made for them. He was grateful that she was willing to make dinner for them was amazing. He wasn’t used to having home cook meals. It was usually whatever he had in the fridge or grabbing something at a store on his way home. So having this was nice to him.

When they were done eating, she scooped their plates up. “Let me just get these rinsed,” she hummed. “And… well I found a bakery that does vegan making I didn’t know if I could actually make a good vegan dessert so I thought I’d better just be safe and buy it, this time anyway.” It was a bit of a disappointment to her that she had felt to nervous to try it. She wanted to impress him.

“It’s ok. I’m not much of a cook, so I wouldn’t know how to make something like that. So don’t worry about that.” Steven didn’t know to cook that much, he tried his best to cook, but he could never make a meal for himself or for someone else. He got up from the table and walked over to her so he could take some of the plates out of her hands and turned to her kitchen to help her clean up the mess. He didn’t feel it was fair for her to make dinner and clean up after him. “You don’t have to do a lot to impress me.”

“Well I might try experimenting still. I do like to bake,” she told him, smiling as he helped clean up. “It’s relaxing for me. I’ve been learning to bake bread and cinnamon rolls lately. Maybe I can figure out a vegan recipe.” Beth grinned at him. “For next time you come over?”

Seeing him begin to relax made her smile. He was cute in his shyness, but when he was comfortable, a little confidence came out. “Absolutely,” she replied. “Think of it as my thanks for putting up with me last night. And it’s a nice time for a date, yeah.”

“I didn’t mind having you around last night. It was nice showing someone the thing I love.” Steven had a great time with her last night, thinking it was nice to have someone around who didn’t tell him to be quiet or just not pay attention to him. So it was nice to have someone be interested in the same things he liked. It was just nice. “So don’t overthink it.”

She couldn’t help a soft laugh at his words. “Feel like that’s a constant for me, overthinking things,” she sighed. “Always afraid I’m too much, that I’m annoying people.” Maybe that was a bit deep to go for a… first date? Second date? She wasn’t totally sure how to classify this. “But okay, I’ll try my best Steven. I had an amazing time last night with you. The best tour guide I’ve ever had.”

“You could never annoy me. I like listening to you talk.” Steven thought she had a lot to say, and he wanted to know everything that was going on in her head. She seemed to know a lot, and he wanted to know what she knew or thought. “Thank you. I enjoyed last night as well. It was nice to be out of my flat for a bit. I normally hide out after work or go to the library. I don’t have that many friends.”

Was it simply that he was shy? Is that why he had few friends? Slowly she reached out, slipping her hand into his. “Well you got me now,” she murmured. “Maybe… maybe more than just a friend?” Then she looked down. He always seemed so taken aback when she was a little bit forward, but then he usually responded well to it. Such a mystery. “And you can always come to the library to see me.”

Steven looked up at her, not expecting her to say that. They had just met, so he didn’t think about dating since they didn’t know each other quite yet. And he had never had a girlfriend before, so he didn’t know if he would be a good fit for a boyfriend it was all confusing to him. “What do you mean by that?” He wanted to ensure that he heard her right and that she meant her words.

“I mean that I wouldn’t mind if we had more dates.” There, maybe that was the easiest way of saying it. She of course never wanted him to be uncomfortable. And she wasn’t used to being the one to speak up like this. With him though, he seemed so uncertain, so unsure. “That is, if you want to, Steven.”
