While this problem may exist, this sentiment makes me extremely uncomfortable.
I am only a little bit acquainted with BDSM, so my discussion on that particular subject may not be entirely accurate or relevant, so I’ll be saving that until the end under a cut. But there are other things here that bother me. For instance, the lack of belief of rape victims is a problem among all types of rape. Rape victims are always blamed for things like “wanting sex at the time and then changing their mind about it after the fact”. That’s not something only seen directed at victims of more violent rapes or rapes that involved extreme amounts of force.
This isn’t on the scale of legal proceedings or anything, but just anecdotally from my own rape, when I told a friend of mine what happened - that my boyfriend at the time used threats of leaving me, increased amounts of insults about my body and weight, and a variety of other methods to coerce me into sex later on in our relationship - my friend questioned if I’d actually wanted the sex, even though I’d directly stated that my consent was under coercion. And this was not when we were partaking in any form of kink. Then there’s always the questioning, by police, by lawyers if you choose to take legal action, from the media, etc. about what the victim was wearing, whether the victim was flirting, and the like. Victim blaming, and people being unconvinced that the victim didn’t actually want the things done to them are not things specific to only victims of violent rapes.
One other thing before I get into the topic of BDSM itself and my experience with it is that I’m not sure that the article linked is from a reputable source. Doing a bit of online searching, the only things I could find reporting on this particular case was… this article or things that only linked back to this article. The website itself seems to be an open-source news website, as seen by under the “Everything” tab there being a “Send us a story” option, and the criteria for having a news story published, as evidenced by this article in question, doesn’t include reference to outside, credible sources beyond stating that the Metro newspaper had reported it, which I could not find. So there’s some food for thought.
Tw for beyond the cut: explicit mentions of sex and sexual acts.
